As with last year I have been through all of our fixtures for this season, and come up with 3 benchmark sets of results which would achieve 3 different objectives:-
a chance of the playoffs (71 points);
almost certain playoff achievement (78 points).
almost certain automatic promotion (90 points).
After each match game I will post 2 graphs. (Obviously, after 3 matches these comparisons are still very early,)
Graph 1 shows our progress against my 3 benchmark sets. With 4 points from the 3 games it is already just about possible to see that we are ahead of my results necessary for the playoffs, and just one point behind my Auto Promotion line.
Graph 2 shows our progress against time (not against the same opponents) compared to last year’s results with Slav and Hecky. On 4 points this year, we are well ahead of the one solitary point that we had with Slav (after playing 3 games). As we only got 2 points from our first 5 games last year we are still certainly destined to stay comfortably ahead for the time being!
My main thought from today is that we are not very good at winning. Ollie Norwood is Marmite - I know that you love him or hate him. He creates goals. But, when you are winning, you don't persist in sending 1 in 20 first time crosses into the box. Level or behind, and wanting to win, that is fine. When you are winning, you keep the ball and wait for them to let you in. This is not necessarily a specific point, but a general point with a specific reference. A 5% ball in a game you are winning is a brain-dead ball. You give away possession with a negative result 95% of the time!
Hecky & Co are brilliant coaches, who need to learn that to become successful managers you don't care how you win.
