We have now gone 20 games unbeaten in all competitions*. The club record unbeaten run in all competitions is 22, which we have done 3 times - 1899-1900, 1935-36 and 1970-71/1971-72**. Can we beat that?

That's put the mockers on it...

* I know purists will say that we lost 2 games on pens in those 20, but it is the usual convention to count penalty "defeats" as draws, so nerr!

** It could be argued that the record is 23 if you count County Cup games (we won one at the end of the 70-71 season)and/or if you count at abanadoned league game at Blackburn in the midst of that 1899-1900 run (the score was 0-0 when the game was abandoned).

All we can do is hope it keeps going. With Tranmere losing too, it can only be good.

When i saw this post by Dazza, last thing i expected was it being football related.
Club record indeed, no mention of dungeons or dwarves anywhere !!!

That's another two points then :)

lol exactly. at home we dont know how to play, cos we havent got the players to break defences down. its hard to be confident of beating anybody, we look just as likely to win away at teams like mk dons and swindon as we do at home to the garbage teams at the bottom.

If Huddersfield can claim their unbeaten run which ended last season which included their PO defeat, then I'm sure we can.

I remember a couple of years ago Man U went until January unbeaten but no one thought they were any good.

They were nicknamed the Unconvincibles but still went on to secure title number 19. Staying unbeaten means picking up points, it's how Reading got 105 points in 05/06

Erm yeah, that may have been in the wrong thread...

In the 20 match run we have lost two matches on penalties so I wouldnt count our present run as a record.

all league games only last 90 minutes ( plus whatever is added on for stoppages) , so thats all you count , results after 90 minutes

I dont think matches against franchise teams should count either, so that extends our unbeaten run by another 9 games

What's this bollocks of not counting a defeat if it comes in extra time or through a penalty shoot out?
Utter hogwash and as deluded as they come if you have that mind set - as much as any fan of the "massive."

Our actual unbeaten run started after Burton at home but if you are going on the one competition, for league games only, then it started after the PoF. We LOST both those games - otherwise we would be in the championship or have played in the next round of the league cup.

FFS if someone "loses" a cup final on penalties after 30 mins ET - who has the fecking cup, eh?
PoF felt like another fecking defeat to me and I shan't pretend otherwise.

We did not lose either game. We lost a shootout which is held after the final whistle is blown and is therefore not part of the actual match. It is simply a mechanism used in the event of a match ending in a stalemate for sorting out who goes forward to the next round of the cup, or who gets promoted in the case of a play off final. The loser of the shootout has not lost a game of football. They have lost a shootout.

If these things were decided by the flip of a coin or the drawing of lots (as used to happen in some european competitions) I don't think you would view it as a lost game of football.

I see Kenlilworth's point to a an extent, but the convention amongst us boring bastards interested in such things is that penalty shoot out "wins" or "defeats" count as draws.

It works the other way as well. We beat Shrewsbury on pens in the League cup in Sept 05. Had that counted as a win we would have had a club record 10 consecutive victories in all competitions. As it didn't, we don't.

Yes I would - we would have lost the game on the toss of a coin.
If there was a trophy associated with the match then losing the toss means not winning the trophy, ergo - the game is lost. What more do you want? Yes we didn't lose the game so we share the trophy? Well we don't.

Now I am as pedantic as many on here and like to be as accurate as I can but I'm convinced we are still third division bobbar and not playing in the championship - or did I get that bit wrong too?

So flipping a coin and calling heads when it's tails or tails when it's heads means you've lost a football match? No it doesn't. It means the match is over, finished, no longer in progress, and finished in stalemate. What was lost was an after match mechanism for sorting out who progresses further in whichever competition it is.

What would be the game were we break the record counting regualr season league games only: Ie: no playoff games and no cup competitions?

It's a long way to go yet - at least another 5 games if the 1971 run of 21 games is the record
