Incoming? Ched Evans

We don't need to get in a bidding war for a striker who will most likely have a number of suitors at championship level when we've got other positions we need to focus on first.

I'd say that about any striker let alone one who even now he's innocent will still divide opinion.

'Unpopularity with plenty'? That's like the arithmetic of the 'Remainers'. 150k signed some 'look at me!' petition. By my reckoning, that makes over 60 million who didn't. Can't have it both ways.

Would he be a good addition to the present squad? Who knows? But imagine if you picked up your paper and read that Bolton, Bradford or Scunny had signed him. I know I wouldn't be pleased.

Well, 26 in 7, but that's me being pedantic.

Agree a striker isn't the priority, but if you have an opportunity to improve your options you should take it, and I for one think Ched would be a short and long term improvement.

There is a difference. When we signed Sharp he'd been playing regularly, and at a higher level.

Evans has played 13 games in 4 and a half years and is injured for the second time in 3 months.

Why would we have any sort of option on him? Doesn't make sense to me. He had nothing to do with us when Chesterfield signed him and Chesterfield don't owe us anything.
 
If he had not gone on the lash in wales that night with his mates ..... it is highly likely we would have gone up that season..

As far as I am aware he has never apologised to the fans for putting himself in that position...

I hope he has a career in football.. but I do not want him back.. not when the team and fans are together .. it's been a long time since that happened

Nice rhetoric, but the point remains. A significant minority, as opposed to a majority. An important factor given that we're a club in harmony at the moment.
 
Cannot see why we wouldn't go for him. He's now officially an innocent man and judging by the reaction Sunday he would be warmly welcomed. He'd come here with something to prove and we could get him for next to nothing. I thought he played well Sunday too, obviously not fit or match sharp but I was impressed with the runs he was making.

We couldnt afford him.

No one would buy him for what we paid and the stupidly astronomical wages he was on with a court case over his head.

We carried on paying his wages so ....we could afford him..
he was shocking whilst playing in the league above.. no-one would be daft enough to offer him anymore than £8,000 a week... he would probably have stayed anyway(owe it to the fans to get us up etc + the rumoured £20,000 a week helps!!)

At the end of the day he had 3/4 of a good season with us.. finally re-paying us.... yes, his goals helped get us up there, but he is paid to do that!!...... but he has still never apologised to the club or fans, as far as I am aware, publicly for putting himself in that position..

I don't want him back......there is such a feel-good factor around the place at the moment and the team is doing well

We had no choice but to pay his wages.... You cant just stop paying his wages. Also you asked for reasons why he wasnt sold, the wages, fee and fact he had a court case hanging over him meant that no one was willing to take the risk.

"We had no choice but to pay his wage...". That is what you said.. you also said we couldn't afford his wages.. we continued to pay his wages.. therefore we COULD afford his wages....

Nobody knows that had he not got a court case coming up he would have been sold for definite..

as I've already stated I hope he has a successful career.. but I think it's better for both him and the club that he doesn't re-sign for us

I can't remember which club but Southampton rings a bell.

Apparently they had a deal sorted for Ched once we had been relegated but then he was arrested and the deal fell through for obvious reasons so he stayed with us and scored a bucketful.

If "the incident" had never happened then he wouldn't have been our player that season so to say he cost of promotion is a bit far off the mark.

The outcome of the trial cost us promotion at that point but who knows how the season would ave panned out if he hadn't been there?

I don't dispute at all what you are saying pal.. but you do say apparently..
I don't think any fan knows for definite.

I personally think that had he not been sent down we would have got promotion that season..

There were strong rumours that Leicester and Southampton were both interested at the time but weren't willing to take the risk with his pending court case.

Despite having a poor previous season for us (in a poor team) he was still highly regarded
 
Seems to me Evans has done enough damage to the club (the season he played for us and then was unavailable at the crucial part of the run-in through the stupidity of his actions off the pitch, criminally innocent or not; the further tarnishing of an already tarnished reputation of the club (after signing Marlon King) throughout his trial and appeals, and then the further disruption and unwanted attention to the club when he came out on parole and was cosying up for a return). Why on earth would we want someone back who would divide the support (and possibly team) again when for once it is United, whose potential contribution to the team is at least questionable and who was more than likely to have buggered off if a better offer came along? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I don't disagree at all with that. If he had been found innocent we would have been promoted its as simple as that.

The point i'm trying to make is that if he hadn't been in that hotel room that night then he more than likely would have been sold the summer we went down.

Why do you say "cosying up for a return"?
My impression was that we, as a club, were simply hoping to get him fit enough to sign him.

"Divide the support"? That's surely a constant amongst football fans? Done, Clarke, Basham anyone?
Ever thought that more might want him back than the other way round?
Looking through these posts (unscientifically) suggests that's the case.
As for stupidity - Jagielka's handball v Wigan - is he now hated by Blades fans?
