Come on then, let's have a scenario where these potential 'cons' come to the fore and affect us negatively...

I'll try...

Peterborough away. 2-0 up, Ched brace. Pissed up Blade chavs chant 'she takes it up the shitter and she's a fuckin whore'. Minor handbags ensue in the away end for 20 seconds. Blade calls Radio Sheffield after game and briefly mentions it. Somebody posts about it on Twitter. 'The feminists' catch wind of it and a petition demanding that Sheffield United are 'banned from football' gets 18,709 signatures. We're named as 'villain of the week' in 'Silly Little Feminist' magazine. Alfreton14Blade posts a thread on S24SU saying that he's "utterly ashamed of my football club and can no longer associate myself with it". Lendegoey 'likes' the post. After being alerted to the thread, John Fleck and Paul Coutts are clearly heartbroken and seek therapy. They decide to tear up their contracts and retire. EEL requests a return to Wolves, and Twitter bans Ched for 10 matches. We're left with no option but to surrender 2nd spot to Bolton before dropping out of the top 6 altogether.

Ok then,

Ched Signs in January and immediately all the celebrity fans declare their disgust and hate for us and relinquish any connection.

Oh wait, you said negative effects. My bad.

How did the game with Peterborough finish which sparked all this off ? ;)

Lol. You're desperate to wave your little home-made Cheddy flag about.

Very much doubt you'll get chance to though. Chris is a serious manager - he'll not concern himself with pointless populist gestures. He doesn't need to.

Can someone explain to me why Dave Allen, of all people, is going to roll over in January and let us sign one of his players?

The only desperation here is from you, floundering around searching for a reason why we shouldn't sign him if we have the chance.

The circumstances have changed around Evans yet you remain as bitter as ever. 'Cheddy' really brings out the warrior in you.

Chris, being a serious manager, won't concern himself with people like you if he can get Evans and thinks he's what we need. Just as he wouldn't allow the fans to persuade him to sign him.

I don't think it will happen either. But it's almost certainly something they will have thought about so you could be in for a nervous January.

Very gratifying from my POV yesterday was that, just after he was substituted and got applauded from all four sides, the "we've got Billy Sharp" chant rang out. We've moved on.

Only after a rendition of "Super Ched", which suggests that "we've moved on" may not be entirely accurate.

What will be, will be.

Ched and Billy could be a partership to rival Deane and Agana.

Both willing to chip in with the hard work, both strong and good at holding the ball up and both very capable of scoring a goal or 4. We only have 4 strikers, one more wouldn't hurt...

Has anyone considered how much Ched would cost to buy? I assume we don't have any money because we never have any money.

Chesterfield wouldn't be able to demand the highest of fee's as his contract is up in the summer anyway!

500k - 750k should do it, allowing them some money to strengthen their squad

Any decision should be made on the football and financial merits. Like any other player really.

With Dave Allen leaving and Chesterfield owing him £8m, they're desperate for money. Add to that the probability of Wilson leaving before January and it seems highly likely that they will sell Evans in January. It's hard to say what he'd cost, it depends entirely on what he does between now and then. I'd estimate between 500k-£1m, unless we have some sort of 'special' option.

But if I were them I'd leave it until the end of the season and hope to get a bigger fee for him... after staying in the division.

They have a one year extension option on his contract.

The fact we're already arguing about it on here suggests it's not worth upsetting the apple cart.

Cracking goal by Leon on Sunday BTW

Us on here argue about the signing of a lot of players though. In fact i'd be willing to go as far as to say we've never signed any player that everyone has agreed with. We also argue about keeping players on (Coutts and Freeman being prime examples). The fans disagreeing won't 'upset the apple cart'.

The players disagreeing with a certain signing is what might though.

You have to consider that us fans see things a lot differently. We see a guy who cost us promotion (arguably) through his actions. Others who aren't in our position may see a guy who has spent a considerable amount of time in jail for something he apparently didn't do.

I'm fairly certain Ched would improve the 1st team and I'm fairly certain we could get him at a decent price....I'm less certain that Wilder wants him here...we shall see....

After all the shit at Chesterfield yesterday, they would probably give us ched for nowt to get him off their wage bill!

The Spireites' bank manager just might have a say in what happens, so a move away from Chesterfield may happen sooner than later.

Wilder: "We held talks with Ched but after seeing people having an argument on S24SU decided it's not worth it."

I suspect it would more along the lines of:-

"We've got 30 odd goals in the last seven games and the fans have all United behind the team. Is there any point making a signing which fans will divide over when we don't need him? Should we keep the cash for another centre mid or a centre half if EEL is recalled?"

I think Wilder is a pragmatist. Given the number of goals we're scoring, I can't see another striker being a priority let alone the attention and bollocks that goes with Ched.

I agree. I do not see a striker as a priority at the moment. Chesterfield will need cash and I am sure there are others willing to pay more. If still available he would be a good replacement for Clark if we make to to the Championship; would think Wilder has other targets in mind.

Evans is on a one year contract and has hardly set the world alight since joining them, plus I doubt there'll be that many takers, certainly no one above this division and a few in it will have reservations.

Because of all that I can't see Chessie getting a big fee for him. He's probably not on big wages either. So all in all they might well hang of and see if he can stay fit enough to get them out of trouble

Wilder's also responsible, covers every base and doesn't only think about the short term. Nor is he complacent and naive enough to assume we'll carry on scoring goals at this rate. So as far as needing him goes, he wouldn't only be thinking about this season. And he'll realise what a rare opportunity it could be.

Would rather keep the money in the bank if we can't keep EEL at January. Think we've got enough up front.

Another way to look at it and learning lessons from previous (& somewhat related) end of season failures - would Utd score enough goals in order to achieve promotion should Sharp suffer an injury that would keep him out for a significant period of time? With Done, Clarke, Lavery and potentially Chapman (discounting the possible return McNulty as I've never felt he's not good nor consistent enough). Personally, I'm not confident they would and would hate for the irony of deciding not to strengthen up-front in Jan with Evans (or someone else) and it coming back to bite the club, just as it did in 2012.

I was actually very impressed with Evans on Sunday - I felt he caused the defence (particularly Basham) all sorts of problems with his strength, speed and movement and only faded when Chesterfield dropped very deep and left him isolated until he went off. Admittedly, it was the first time I've seen him in action this season but if that is typical of how he's been playing, I for one would welcome the news should Wilder go for him.
