Ched Evans...

According to a source I know.....you're way off on his wages. If you think that's a large wage for him you would be horrified at what he is supposedly paid. Having said that, my source is trustworthy but not necessarily correct so it could just be hear say.

Cant confirm it as fact in other words.

One of, if not the highest paid players outside the premiership - as per our Chairman. Even allowing for a bit of spin, I'm certain you're looking between £20K and £30K per week.

A start

First post, hello all. Personally I thought Ched had one of the best games I've seen from him for us, not exactly great admittedly, but progress. I think it's fair to say we overpaid, but we don't have the funds to go and sign a replacement so we're stuck with what we've got for now. Speed sounds like he recognises Ched's shortcomings so hopefully we may yet see what persuaded us to lay out all that money...

We have Bogdanovich who must look paticularly crap in training to not displace Evans.

Someone's head should roll though, steelcity, don't you agree? If he is on as much as you are suggesting, under no circumstances has he justified even 50% of it.

Hmmm, I dont know axel. On the one hand I wouldn't blame Ched because its not his fault if United are prepared to pay him over the odds.....on the other hand, this is what you have to pay for footballers nowadays if they have any sort of reputation. Its just the way things are and Ched is unfortunately a victim of his price tag IMO.

The argument over Ched is continually clouded by the disagreement over whether he is a "development" player (one for the future) or whether he is a marquee signing who should score 20+ a season because of his fee. Until he starts scoring regularly the argument will rage on.

I see some potential in the lad personally and as a Blade I'm 100% behind him.

I've no doubt there is some potential there, but I just don't think that the Sheffield United of 2010 can afford to wait for it to arrive as much as the Sheffield United of 2006 could.

Generally at this stage in the season we are arguing over who our potential 20 goal a season striker is.

This season we are arguing over whether this guy will score at all.

Even though his shortcomings have been noted extensively elsewhere in the thread, there is an obvious drop in expectations there.

It isn't right to dismiss people who are pointing out his defeciencies just because he is felt to have potential.

The defeciencies in his game are obvious, the potential is not by any means.

so the sheffield united of 2006 would have spent 3mil on a striker for him to play 50 games and not reach double figures? i think not.

By any measure we've made a huge financial mistake and I think it's not only those within the club that are struggling to come to terms with it. But the money has gone, and he isn't even the best option from within the club, let alone from elsewhere. We must move on rather than debate how long he deserves to prove himself.

Not even Manchester United would spend £3m on a striker and play him for 50 games/3 goals. My point was that United's finances were more potent in 2006 than they are in
2010, ergo we cannot afford for him to be a flop. Plus, have we actually spent £3m on him? It's all add ons and appearance based is it not?

I just keep thinking "Chris Guthrie", which isn't something that gentlemen of my vintage like to think too often. Another one we paid well over the odds for, our record signing at the time. He was only 21, we persevered with him, and look where it got us. Ched hasn't done it for us, but because he cost us so much money that we couldn't really afford we feel that we must give him chance after chance after chance. It was a daft amount to spend on a player with very little first team experience. I think its time we tried to loan him out, to free up a bit of wage bill.

£3M later, £1.5M in wages, the same sorry result. He's crap.

I haven't seen him play so can't really comment on his ability as a footballer BUT the alleged fee was not down to him. I would never blame a player for the transfer fee. That is surely down to management

As previoulsy stated, that's just the salt in the wounds. It's also the reason, as Nick points out above, that we're persevering with him well past the date all evidence says we shouldn't be - that's the relevance.

I'd say the Sheffield United of 2010 has to wait for it to arrive whereas the Sheffield United of 2006 could've gone out and bought a replacement. Too much money? Yes. Can we afford to write it all off and leave him in the reserves then sell him for next to nothing somewhere down the line? No. Bottom line is he has potential, so we need our coaching staff to get it out of him so we can at very least claw back some of the money spent. It's like buying a house and finding out it's a right lemon. Unless you've got a tonne of cash you can't just think, "sod it, I'll leave it and go buy another!", you have to do some work on it and get it at very least saleable.

It's actually 42 appearances 5 goals (but yes that is still a poor return)

Diego Forlan onlny got 17 goals from 98 appearances for Man United though (which isn't a million miles for goals to game ratio for Ched) and they spent £7.5 million on him (in a less expensive market).

But yes, I get your point.

For me though, I still believe Ched will come good, he just needs a bit of lady luck, a couple of crap goals to go in.

Yes.

...and Cresswell has scored more than twice as many goals as Evans in half as many matches.

Really that surprises me given Hendos record prior to last seasons little run. How many goals had Hendo got after 50 appearances?

If I've calculated right, after 42 games (same as our Ched) Hendo has 13 goals. So 8 more.

Henderson though was used as a first team choice and kept on the pitch for a lot of 90 minutes game.
Whereas I don't recall any full 90 minute games for young Ched (although I'm sure there are some). Also Ched has come on as sub for around 35% of his games played too.

Further to that, Hendersons first full year was part of a team that had better players around him too and subsequently finished third in the league.

I dont see how we have much choice axel. Who can we afford at the moment that is any better? Apparently (not my opinions) Ward is a winger, Hendo is nothing but a big target man and Boggy is rubbish.....as I said not my opinions but if you listen to our supporters we haven't got much to rival Ched.

We certainly dont have the money to go out and buy a better striker so persist we must IMO.

Give the lad some credit, he is saving us a fortune if his transfer fee has add-ons for goals scored.

Ched has scored well elsewhere and will here. If Speed is correct that Ched is not a mighty intellect maybe he hasn't yet worked out that Blackwell has gone and United don't have to be shite any more. He's a big lad and it may take time to sink in. We will look back on his fallow period and laugh (I hope).

Completely agree, steelcity. That's what I meant anyway, sufc in 06 had a few bob to spend, sufc in '10 hasn't got two bob to it's name, so we must persevere to an extent. I just hope that the fact that we've got so little options up front, and are scoring so few goals coupled with our defensive record dosen't equate to a bottom 3 finish.

I can confirm first hand that Ched is indeed a puddin'. A nice fella but a puddin' none the less all be it with a cracking girlfriend :)

Well stranger things have happened. I wouldn't worry about that though axel, we might be struggling to score goals at the moment but that will improve. We have to remember that whilst the players have been adjusting to a new formation they are now also trying to adjust to a different way of playing under Speed so things will get better.

I'm not at all worried about us getting into trouble. We have enough quality to stay away from that and our manager seems to have some good ideas so I'm quite relaxed about it all. I'm prepared to be patient and let Speedo develop his own team.

What I want to see is United becoming competitive up the top end again and playing some good football. I would be happy enough with just that for this season. I then want to see us kick on at the beginning of next season and challenge for automatic promotion. I think the level of transition we are looking at is too much to overcome in just 8 months.

Patience is a virtue :)

IMHO we should give the lad a bit of slack and try to boost his confidence a bit, perhaps by making him a new song. He looks
like a player with little confidence at the moment, although his last 2 games have been the best he's played so far.
We talk about 3m, but from what we hear he's only actually cost 750k so far. Billy cost us 1.5m and was no more prolific
in front of goal and he was given little flack (cos he's a Blade).
I think we should also take account of the fact that although he's played 42 games, only 4 of those have been while we've
been playing football, under Spedo. The rest were getting neckache under Hoofy where the ball was constantly 10 feet over his head.
If we could all give Speedo and all the players 100% support, particularly vocally on match day and see how we are performing as a team
after Xmas, that will be a better indication.
A bit of pace and creativity for upfront and wide left (on loan) would certainly help, but I have to say that result aside, I enjoyed
the match on Tuesday night. Football which was a pleasure to watch!!!

After hearing Speed's comments at the Meet the Manager event I sought out another view.

I noticed Iwan Roberts (ex-Welsh International striker for those too young to remember) was on Twitter and asked him what he thought, on the basis he works in the media and will have seen a bit of him, albeit at international /U21 matches.

His reply "Yet to be convinced if I am totally honest. Doesn't react quick enough and waits for things to happen". Which I kind of agree with.

His positional sense seems awry at times, on Tuesday in the 2nd half I twice saw him running from space to then stand static in front of a defender and I just don't see him having the natural pace to play off the last defender. I thought Bogdanovic showed more movement when he came on than Ched had managed in previous 75 minutes. Maybe he needs that coaching that Speed described, but how long do we give him.

Even the greatest strikers have long baron spells,Shearer,Rush,Owen,Fowler to name a few. When the strikers are mis-firing the midfielders should be chipping in with goals. That wont happen with our present midfield.Going back to the other night if Cheds effort that it the post had gone in he may have finished with a hat trick, and we could have gone on to beat Scunthorpe easily.Im confident if we persevere with him and keep creating chances then he'lle come good.Dropping him or loaning him out will do nothing for his confidence. The football the other night was a joy to watch at times compared to the last regime. It is going to take a little time to get going.Something most people on here were prepared to allow. But already they appear to looking for another scapegoat.UTB.

5 goals in 42 isn't scapegoat material. It's a statement of fact. He's miles away from doing the job he's supposed to do. And it's a pretty important job, in footbaling terms. I don't think people are scapegoating him, they're urging the club to try something different, like the man on the bench who outscored him by 4 goals to every 1, in a shit side last season.

Ah Chris Guthrie. He cost £100k when you could buy a new Ford Escort for £1k. He was the answer to the long held belief we needed a big target man and the goals would flow in. Apart from the first game when he looked decent that was it. Did he go back to Southend? Ched looks much more like a footballer than Guthrie. Time will tell.

Taking away the goals ratio etc ,Henderson offers much more than Evans.
Saying he can potentially score loads of goals is like saying he can potentially get ricketts. We can't keep hoping.
