Chasing Peterborough

After beating Villa, Fulham, Forest and Charlton, why should we fear a League One side at home?
I chose the wrong words... it will be interesting to see how we cope. Just like us they have won 9 in a row but they've averaged almost 3 goals per game and only conceded 2 in these 9 games. THIS will be the most challenging game of the season so far in my opinion.

I'm only holding out a slim hope for play-offs, although IF we win our games in hand it's only 5 points with 11 games to go which is achievable. There would be benefits of having another season in this league for us to fully prepare but obviously I'd rather us go up especially as I feel we are as good as if not better than some of the teams in the top 6 right now.

Ok, I'm now IN.

We can do it under the following circumstances and in my view there are only 4 sides that can finish 6th. Posh, Donkeys, Crawley or us. I think Walsall and Swindon would have to get 2.4 points per game to stand a chance and they won't do that.

If we assume Posh continue to be crap and limp along at their current rate of points accrual they will finish with about 72 points (their fixture list suggests they should do better than that). I have assumed for some time that their form wouldn't collapse and they would get 75 points plus - we won't get that but if they do dip, we could nip in.

MK Donkeys would need 20 points from 10 games to reach 72: ie 2 points per game.

We would need 28 points from 13 games: 2.15 points per game. (Win 8, Draw 4 Lose 1 or Win 9, Draw 1 Lose 3 is what we would be required to do)

Crawley would need 32 points from 15 games: similar to us 2.13 points per game.(I don't think they will do this)

I have for some time thought we could finish 7th but with Posh failing, we could do it. It's Posh's to lose. (To put this in context Posh winning 5, drawing 3 and losing 3, gives them 73 points which is probably too much for us)

Winning tomorrow will obviously be a big boost.

By this time Monday evening the gap could be 5 points with a game in hand. Let that sink in for a while.

We need to just take each game as it comes. Not think about points/form/tables NC has done exactly this and picked a suitable team/formation for each match and we've gone 9 unbeaten. Let's just continue this.

True, but all the more reason to look forward to it! I know it's difficult for Blades to come to terms with but we are well on the way to being a good team. Moreover, with Nigel in charge it's going to get even better.

Those of you who don't look forward to big, challenging games might want to get off the bus now. Most of us are beginning to really enjoy the journey and there's every chance of bigger, better and, yes, tougher to come.

I think Nigel and the lads are entitled to a bit of faith from us after what they've done, rather than doom-laden forecasts that fail to acknowledge just how well our team are performing.

If we have any pretensions to being a championship side we need to start thinking we can beat the team's above us (my tablet put the apostrophe in not me). As the race for automatics hots up there will be more nerves and more errors from the top teams. We are perfectly poised to take advantage since no one really expects it of us. Even someone like me who suffers from ODD** can see the possibility of making the play offs. Yikes, 3 possible trips to Wembley in one season.

** ODD or Optimism Deficiency Disorder is an acquired condition resulting from regular and prolonged exposure to inept and uninspiring football. Recent advances in beard therapy have greatly improved the chances of stabilising the condition but there is currently no permanent cure

Professor Clough, head of the SUFC Research think tank, is believed to be very close a permanent cure. Secret tests are currently being carried out on a group of specially selected volunteers at a facility close to Shoreham Street.

Hush, Hush......

Fuck Peterborough. I am as concerned about Walsall (dropped points tonight) and MK Dons. It isn't just about getting Posh beat. And anyway, this assumes we will get a big haul of points from our tough run. Am not hugely confident at this stage.

It looks like Peterborough are trying their hardest to fuck things up for themselves. Like others have said, MK Dons we'll be a tough one to catch.

I know we have games in hand but we've never done well with games in hand!

Semi final means we've now had the Oldham game moved too.

It's a lot of points to make up, but the way that Nigel rotates the players and changes his tactics I don't think we'll have a massive problem with fatigue, so with our squad we have the fitness. This doesn't account for injuries and suspensions though.

Can we do it? This year I think yes we can

Definitely think we can do it, although I'd quite happily miss out and romp the league next season if it meant us getting to the FA Cup Final. Don't even have to win the thing, just want to get to the final!

Before anybody gets carried away, we aren't actually safe yet. Sounds pessimistic i know, but we've had a really soft run of fixtures and now we have a brutal run. Next 7 games (after Carlisle) we have to play ALL the top 5 plus Swindon and Crawley. It's a good job we have those now, imagine where we could be if we had those fixtures right after the Crewe defeat. Bottom of the league probably. We had the easier fixtures at the right time for sure. Still had to win em obviously, now confidence is back we're more likely to win the harder matches too. But it's gonna take some going to win 4 of those 7, never mind close down the gap on 6th place.

Win tonight then concentrate on the next game, then the next one etc etc. The first aim is to get safe then look above. The sooner we hit 50 points the better.

Its got nothing to do with faith and everything to do with the pragmatism of saving ourselves from relegation before we start reaching.for the stars.

It's achievable yes, but it is a lot of ground to make up.

Managers not doing too bad a job for us.

Should never slag your players off in public.
