Captain for next season?

Let me ask a different question then...

Let's assume Billy is out, injured, suspended, or caught up in a battle between Kurds and Somali's whilst visiting Mangala on Spital Hill.

Who's your choice of Captain now?

Coutts took the armband last season in his absence. But is he the best choice?

I'd give it Stearman tbh.

Never understood the reason why strikers can't be captains

Isn't it Mangla?
Apart from that I agree with your point, although the likelihood of Sharp fucking off to engage in a conflict between Kurds and Somalis is unlikely if only due to the fucking huge geographical differences between the two and that it would be unlikely they'd ever fucking heard of each other.
Apart from that.....
Rethinking this I agree it's likely on Spital Hill but not elsewhere.
Only in Sheffield.

Coutts or Basham (basham captained us a few times under adkins and looked comfortable at it)

You're right. Used to be Mangala but an "A" got shot off and they never replaced it.

Billy is the Captain until Billy and Wilder decide otherwise.

Never seen a man prouder to wear that armband and lead that team than Billy. He leads from the front and his attitude is absolutely infectious.

There will be no other.

Never agreed with it in the first place. I don't think a striker should ever be captain. Having said that now that we've done it I wouldn't take it off him without good reason.

There's no decision to be made!!. It's got to be billy until wilder says different but don't see it happening despite us playing at a higher level!.

Billy Sharp. Obviously.

Just because you're not captain it doesn't mean you can't be a leader at the back.

Anybody remember when Higdon was Captain first game of season against Bristol City. Fucking hell!

Exhibit A in the Nigel Clough crimes against SUFC trial.

As I recall, Clough suggested a few had been arguing about wanting it, so in the end he chose Higdon because "why not?"

A lesson in discipline maybe, but what a fucking way to disrespect the captaincy. It's not something that should be trivially given someone (particularly if that someone is Higdon) – players should want to run through brick walls to wear the armband, and no wonder you had a few arguing over it. Too bloody right.

I think Stearman would be a much better captain than Billy. However, you'd be a brave man to try and take it off him. I'm not sold on strikers as captains as it is. Should be a GK, CB or CM. can see the pitch and what's going on.

In actuality, you'd want 3 or 4 captains on the pitch.

i know what your saying but ive never understood this can see the full pitch comment, i was a striker and due to having eyes could still see the full pitch

Yes but all the best Captains have been defenders or midfielders. Why?

Would you leave it with Billy - who I must be honest, surprised me with his leadership and maturity last season. I didn't think he was the right temperament to do that job, but barring one occasion (at Chesterfield I think?) when he aggressively barged Basham in the chest for claiming a goal he thought was his, I thought he did really well.

Or would you give it to a player "further down the field" who can see what is going on and has very strong leadership qualities? Like Stearman for example?

What message would you be sending to the squad by taking the captaincy away from Sharp?

I wouldn't take it away from Sharp - for now. But if Sharp isn't playing then we'd need someone else to be Captain - and I'd probably give that to Stearman because of his experience and known leadership qualities. I think he's a bigger character than Coutts for example and would make a better team Captain.

I said, "for now" because I think Billy should eventually become the overall "Club Captain" in recognition of his service to the club. This would allow us to select a different team Captain for match-days if need be. We've gone with that system before and it worked well.

Billy fuckin Sharp. Not broke, don't fix it.

If it's cos of injury or summat then Bash.

UTMB!

Making Billy captain was a masterstroke because not only did it give the club an excellent team leader, it also made him a much better all-round team player. We can have leaders sharing the load throughout the team ... as Jake Wright proved last season.
