Would you leave it with Billy - who I must be honest, surprised me with his leadership and maturity last season. I didn't think he was the right temperament to do that job, but barring one occasion (at Chesterfield I think?) when he aggressively barged Basham in the chest for claiming a goal he thought was his, I thought he did really well.

Or would you give it to a player "further down the field" who can see what is going on and has very strong leadership qualities? Like Stearman for example?

Definately Billy. Club captain regardless of whether he is in the team or not, without question.

Team spirit and squad harmony are vital to success.... it was clear last season that Billy played an huge part in engendering this

Hugely depends on what part CW sees Billy playing this season....... If he is only going to be bit-part, off the bench, then I can see Wilder making him Club Captain but giving the armband to someone else.

Personally I would love to see Billy carry on from where he left off last season and lead from the front, only time will tell if he can still do it at Championship level but if he becomes more of a "fox in the box" player rather than one who pulls out wide then there's no reason why not....I'm afraid if we are playing a counter-attacking game, looking to catch teams on the break then Billy may not be able to hold the ball up as easily at this level and we may have to play someone with more pace...

Interesting story on the radio yesterday about how Redknapp had made Quashie captain at Portsmouth and then signed Merson. He asked Quashie if he minded giving up the captaincy for Merson? Quashie was happy to do so as the Portsmouth players all looked up to Merson. Once Merson left, Quashie got the captaincy again.

So, if someone like Jags came in (he won't) then I wouldn't be surprised if Billy did the same. Otherwise, leave it. Billy's got plenty of championship experience and showed his leadership qualities last season.

Billy Sharp.....no question in my mind (and I am not the biggest Billy fan) as he did a brilliant job of it last season. If he were ever to become a bit part player then maybe but otherwise....... Leave well alone.

It's a fair question. We are playing at a higher level and must expect to have less domination of teams as a routine matter meaning the opposition will have more possession than last year and we will face more pressure. A good captain makes a difference when things aren't always going your way,not just when they are. Is Billy the right man for that?
I guess we'll find out.

I think Stearman would be a much better captain than Billy. However, you'd be a brave man to try and take it off him. I'm not sold on strikers as captains as it is. Should be a GK, CB or CM. can see the pitch and what's going on.

In actuality, you'd want 3 or 4 captains on the pitch.

I certainly think you need an assertive, confident vocal keeper a la Schmeical type to keep the back 4/3 on point

Every keeper should be vocal. They should be constantly keeping the defence on their toes.
You need a vocal CB who marshals the line
You need a vocal CM should leads through his own actions.

Call me old fashioned but I've been brought up to see a captain who has been a strong and aggressive centre back. Billy's been a great captain and wouldn't be suprised if he was given the armband for this season. I don't think we've got any centre backs at the moment that can warrant the armband for this season(controversial), but I would absolutely love to see John Fleck be the captain. We saw him control the ball, make play happen, and does not take any shit from anyone so why not?

My verdict-John Fleck
