Glad to see Basham as captain today.

If nothing else he tends to be the one who fetches the ball out of the back of the net and gets on with the game when we concede or score but still need to get back on level terms.

(I think a good captain *can* (obviously) make a.difference but the good ones are rare, a lot of the time it's a fairly anonymous role istm.)

Whilst loads were calling for him to be CB last season, a few of us were suggesting Bash to take over from Doyle in Midfield and be awarded the Captaincy.

Great volley for the goal. Praised by Adkins who was very coy about whether McEveley would be selected for Tuesday.

I've an idea who will be our captain by the end of the year....

Basham played very well as captain yesterday - if that is what it does to him and helps to making him better then he has to stay captain.

Like some of our players Basham is adapting to a new role so he has to give us more consistency and repeat yesterdays performances.

Basham was much better yesterday, I think he's been a bit soft so far this season. Hopefully having the Captain's armband encourages him to step it up and lead by example. Great finish for his goal.

I thought Basham overall is still a bit of a weak link in midfield, but he does do a lot of the spade work, but I feel like we had a better performance out of him and midfield in general thanks to the input of Paul Coutts who I thought was absolutely superb.

Agreed.....and just think how much better he'd be if he wasn't wearing overalls and carrying that fucking stupid spade around with him.....

Is it our young central defender that will probably captain us a week on Tuesday against Countyas he continues to build up his fitness?

I think young Harrison has a long way to go yet. He needs to spend time working on his game before we complicate matters by making him captain. Still, he's a big lad who might make a centre-half one day...

Played great the other day, did Captain Bash.

THAT'S a captains performance, if you're watching Jay.

Comments are a bit unfair, if actually true.

Adkins appointed him Captain and had some glowing words about McEv in pre-season.

Whilst I agree with you that McEv was not captain material, our noble leader should not have made such a quick decision on appointing him in the first place. Bad error of judgement by Adkins - hope he is better with his choice of footballers.

On a related note, does anyone know if McEv and JCR were injured or simply dumped out of the match day squad entirely?

I totally agree, Adkins made a mistake in appointing a second rate left back as our captain. Says it all when a lad we signed from Ilkeston outperforms him at left back.

Although, I don't blame him for being made captain, it was Adkins very first mistake. Basham would have been everyones choice.

After how he's been playing I 100% can see him dropping McEveley but covering it up if I'm honest, can't see him doing that with JCR. Doesn't rally warrant being dropped from the squad entirely.

The official reason was injury. Quite what the injuries were is open to speculation but as Woolford was on the bench despite being comfortably worse than either McEveley or Campbell-Ryce against Bradford, I'd be inclined to think that they both picked up knocks.

The challenge for them will be to get back into the team: Kieron Wallace did well at left back while Campbell-Ryce wasn't missed in midfield.

He made his judgement based on the information available to him at the time.

I'm not convinced he did. He only had to review a few of last season's games and talk to some of our staff to know that he wasn't a forceful personality and probably not good enough to command a place at left back once Bob was fit.

Obviously he had his reasons, perhaps because McEv is a solid pro who will set a good example and maybe he thought making him captain would lift his game, like when Beckham became England captain and immediately grew up, but I'd still say it comes across as a gamble rather than a considered decision.

In his defence, I'm not sure there was an obvious choice at the time and maybe McEv is highly respected in the dressing room.

I trust Adkins' decision making process.

You can do all the research you like, use all your experience, and still.make a balls up. That's what I think happened here.

McEveley's playing ability aside I think he got this one wrong, it was immediately obvious at Gillingham when he started having a go at Long.

On this occasion I think the fans were right and he was wrong, but it's not always like that. :-)

Credit to him for reconsidering, if that's what's happened.

Fwiw I think McEveley should be a decent squad player and I really hope he hasn't been hounded out of the club thereby reducing our options later in the season.

Adkins has gone on record as saying McEv had been a top notch individual since Adkins and crew came to the club. I have no doubt in disbelieving that.

Adkins "saw" it all in pre-season and made his own judgement that McEv would make a decent captain. Adkins "may" have seen McEv play in videos and if he asked some people at the club for advice then that advice was IMHO bad advice.

Adkins could have had a cup of coffee with 99% of Blades who would all have told him that McEv would probably bit a shit captain.

Adkins made a bad call and whilst I don't expect Adkins to hold his hands up and say so.............we ALL know so there isn't really any point in fuelling the flames.

Be interesting to see what happens when McEv gets back in the team as he invariably will at some point.

As to your comment above, I am amazed that Adkins made the call so new into a new football club - it has made him look a prat. Don't mind as long as he learns from his mistake.

I'm not so sure that it's inevitable that McEv gets back in the team at some point. Wallace did a decent job on Saturday and if he can hold onto the shirt until whispering Bob is match fit then McEv has more chance of shitting in the Queen's handbag than getting a game ( I'm making the reasonable assumption that every one of our defenders at the Club including U18's would have to be injured / suspended for him to get a game at CH and even then the tea-lady is still ahead of him) o_O

Hopefully, he will be one of a few in our squad who are allowed out on loan in January, if not before, with a view to "moving on " in the Summer ......

True - I turned to my nipper and said I would make Wallace my MOM - the young kid did well, got forward and showed a considerable amount of skill. Yep, like what I saw - he just needs to be a bit stronger and meaner...........give him some raw meat at lunchtime !

Not sure he is necessarily a "bad captain". Adkins captain at Southampton was Kelvin Davies and he didn't play as they climbed the leagues. I think there's more to it than just on the field performance. He also spoke about a leadership team so if Jay isn't picked then there's others who can take the responsibility.
