Hecky also promised Sharp a new deal but reneged on that at the end of the last promo season. That from Billy, directly.
You say "reneged" but its more likely Hechy was overruled surely.. Maybe he over promised, but likely wanted to keep him..

Some are suggesting he has a lower back problem and we have not managed that injury properly.

I do remember him picking up that injury and it's fair to say he hasn't been quite right since.

The lad is clearly not right or carrying an injury. He drove me insane in his cameo on Friday - barely running, ambling back.
The one time he got the ball on the break he was so slow and whilst he did set up the chance for Peck - his lack of pace/confidence to go past the centre half before hand was worrying for someone who used to be pretty nippy and had only been on the pitch a handful of minutes

Which is a contrast to his cameo vs derby which i thought he did well in and unlucky not to bag.

That run you mentioned friday, I have no doubt that during his purple patch when he was bagging goals that move would have resulted in one.

Hes a bit of a strange one atm isnt he. Theres no mention of bad attitude or diet like mousett but somethings got to be going off in the background. Gone from looking quick and powerful with tricks to being slowest and unfittest in squad and low on confidence.

But as mentioned before and from the view from it seem a reoccurrence from his stoke days. Played well then dropped of a Cliffe and cba to play body language.

He certainly doesn't look like winning the shirt back anytime soon, id look to move him on if the opportunity arose.

On his day he's the best striker in the squad, but his gradual decline since we first signed him has been quite something.
  • 2024-25: 10 Championship goals at 0.57 per 90 minutes (the best minutes-to-goals ratio in the league). But only managed 1,580 minutes across the season - the league's top scorer Piroe managed double that.
  • 2025-25: 6 Championship goals at 0.29 per 90 minutes (the 46th-best minutes-to-goals ratio in the league). Managed 1,883 minutes with a much poorer return per 90.
  • 2025-26: 0 Championship goals in 9 matches. Only managed 239 minutes out of a possible 1,170.
A good player, but the decision to award him a new contract looks incredibly generous given how much he has deteriorated physically.

His fitness, for whatever reason, prevents him from getting enough consistent game time. And I think that is something we perhaps did alright with in that first season. We were able to get enough minutes from him because he'd bag goals when he played.

Its not esteemed company, but during his time he's been the best finisher at the club.

The problem is that during that time as you point out, he's played considerably fewer mins and whats worse is that he's not getting the chances or he's played in a way which is more of a hold up role, so his goal tally has dipped.

Were a side now with less creativity, but playing on the counter should still get us some chances.

In hindsight, on this seasons showing, the contract wasn't wise, but i don't think we had too much choice in this belt tightening phase.

Whilst I'm generally sympathetic to players who lose form , and have been with Campbell. The sight of him ambling back ( ambling is kind btw) for a rare Wrexham counter on Friday soon after coming on cant be a fitness issue.
Call it attitude , mentality or whatever but he just didnt look like he wanted to be there .

Atm the guys just filling a shirt on the bench and along way behind Ayew in the pecking order . Really dont know where we go with him tbh .

I speculated at the end of 2024-5 that Campbell's performance that year - which was good - was the absolute best he could do based on how he had been at Stoke. It was not a case of him kicking on and getting 15 a season. Regression was more likely, which is what happened.

In extending his deal we have paid for what he did the season before last.

Would his dad passing away have any factor to his decline in form. As I'm sure I heard somewhere that he was his mentor, and with his dad not giving him advice behind closed doors, could this be the reason?

Kevin Campbell died before we signed him.
