On the bright side, u did play a huge part in creating one of the best pieces of football commentary I’ve heard…….”OHHHHHHHHHH MICHEAL BROWN WITH A STUNNER. THAT IS ASTOUNDING. SHEFFIELD UNITED 2 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAYS 1. PICK THAT ONE OUT.
Tony Bloom has spent over £500 million on Brighton and that figure was quoted over a year ago and yes they've spent miles more in transfer fees than us. Bloom is clearly shrewd and intelligent, got a plan and is a very good owner. But don't kid yourself that this is all organic. They've bought their way into the Premier League and their current positionHas it come at hefty price? Until the last couple of seasons neither club had spent much more on any individual player than we did for players such as Berge, Brewster, Archer or Ramsdale:
I would say both clubs have spent conservatively, relative to their status at any given time.
I would love to see the road map for “our way and better”, as our premier league recruitment has been very poor during our 3 seasons there recently: I’d be happy emulating either club to be honest, and we we can, we’ll stay up.
To be fair to bloom, that figure is over his tenure there since 2009.... 400m over 16 years to get to where they are now, isn't that HUGE a deal.Tony Bloom has spent over £500 million on Brighton and that figure was quoted over a year ago and yes they've spent miles more in transfer fees than us. I don't think anyone is disputing who funds Brentford and Brighton, but there's no disputing that their recruitment is fantastic. Both have directors of football who manage all sides of recruitment. This only works if you have a DoF who can find the right players for the coaches system, or a coach who is willing to change the system to suit the players that the DoF recruits. Both Brighton and Brentford have filthy rich owners that have ploughed hundreds of millions into their clubs. That's the reason they are both in the Premier League and able to maintain that status. People need to stop holding them up as good examples, along with Bournemouth and Fulham, because they aren't, their status is bought and paid for!
Burnley were different, what Dyche managed to do on the budget was amazing. He doesn't get enough kudos I think.
I think Wilders been incredible in the transfer market for us and neither do I think most of his big money signings were flops. I dunno why people don't trust him with the money, that seems silly. What he does need is a bigger and better scouting and recruitment department, which is something he has saidI don't think anyone is disputing who funds Brentford and Brighton, but there's no disputing that their recruitment is fantastic. Brighton's current DoF is David Weir, who tried to build us a team from the best rejected Premier League academy players. Perhaps it might have worked if he had been given a season to mould them, but the club were obsessed with promotion and panicked.
I've always said we need a DoF as our "big money" transfers under Wilder have generally been expensive flops who have left at a loss or for free, Cannon looking very much like the next example. One of my biggest concerns for this summer is giving Wilder the chequebook again. Also, if a DoF signed us two quality, pacey wingers, I just can't see Wilder changing his system to accommodate them, as he's stubborn and will force square pegs into round holes.
Modern football is very much about DoFs and head coaches instead of managers who do everything. We are very much still rooted in the last, though the two random January signings suggest the new owners want to change this and move us forward.
Would a DoF get deals done quicker and see players through the door in time for pre-season rather than last minute where they're then 2 months behind the team in terms of being match fit and sharp.Presently 19 of the 20 Premier League clubs have a Director of Football/Sporting Director/Technical Director (info available on Premier League website) only Southampton are without. Last year Bettis was quoted in the Star saying that we will not be having a DofF. Was that because the Prince didn't want one or wasn't prepared to pay for one or it wouldn't be viable in the structure/culture that Wilder prefers to work in. Is the "Sheffield United/Wilder/Bettis way" going to result in the "established" Premier League club that the new owners say is their aim? Additionally approximately 75% of Premier League players used this season are foreign!!!

I'm not saying that Bloom hasn't invested lots of money into Brighton, or that they could have got to the PL without him*, I'm saying that there spending on transfers has been reasonable: they have an average net spend of £15m over their last 5 windows, which is considerably lower than any net spend we've had in any given premier league season.
*if we are to be promoted this season, it won't be organic either, we will have benefitted from the investment we recieved in the Jan window.
