Eerily spooky that you posted an RAF march to start the thread.
About 1.30 today an Avro Lancaster flew over Todwick and presumably minutes later, over sunny Sheff.

No idea where it was going but those 4 throbbing Merlin engines make a beautiful noise. A coincidentally apt tribute to Bob.

Appeared in front of him when he was a Magistrate the week after we had lost in the cup to Norwich. I was wearing my United tie. Commended me on my choice of tie and team but said it wasn’t going to sway his decision one iota. Lovely bloke.

Bob said in an interview :

"I think the aim in those days was to make you smile or laugh on your way home from a match when you'd seen your team get stuffed, and try and cheer you up before you got home, and it worked."

It certainly did work, callers from every SY club cracked me up and certainly gave you a laugh on the way home. RIP RJ and thanks for the cracking entertainment.

So do I. Not that much though. Maybe we are all that much more savvy and expect too much these days. Look or listen to old footage to realise that but confidence in Bob Jackson was well up there in his prime. His manner and rapport with fans was simply brilliant. No caller ever got slated or belittled when Bob spoke with him/her.

However, I once met you at a function at Bramall Lane and found you overbearing and arrogant to the point of rudeness.

In the early 90s when the blades were in the top flight I had the pleasure of doing some construction work at Bobs home in Totley. He knew I followed the Blades home and away but on the weekend we were due to finish he asked me if I would be going to Southampton away. I told him no and would be listening to his show so he promised to give me and my mate a shoutout just after half time. Sure enough he was a man of his word and thanked us for the effort we had put in. I found him to be a polite, generous man but also extremely knowledgeable.

I knew Bob well, both as a Magistrate and bowler. He was very much a Blade, for those who don’t know that.

I last saw him at my dad’s funeral last year and he also attended my mum’s. He never forgot his old bowling pals. He and my dad won the Sheffield Veterans Indoor Pairs together.

I remember the day at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court when a defendant who thought Robert had treated him a little harshly called out ‘Its a grumble, Bob...’

Condolences to Richard (also a Blade) and all the family.

He was indeed a gentleman, and a giant of local sports coverage in its infancy. A lovely bloke to chat with too, he knew his sport. He’s a loss. RIP Bob, with love.

Bob’s delivery of P&G was a masterclass in radio presentation, callers were given the the option of a P or a G and you had 30 seconds only - very unlike today’s parody where listeners are subjected to the inane ramblings of uninteresting football egos.

I know that one shouldn't speak ill of the dead (why not?) but I can only relate to my one personal experience of Robert Jackson, which still rankles, 30 years later. It happened when my childhood hero, Jimmy Hagan, was visiting Sheffield from his home in Portugal in the 1980s. There was an event at Bramall Lane where he could meet fans and have a Q & A session. I waited patiently for my turn to meet the great man, and finally got my chance. Jimmy treated me with great courtesy but I had barely got a word in before Bob Jackson strode across, ignored me, and without so much as an "Excuse me" grabbed Jimmy and said "There's someone I'd like you to meet, and steered him away to the other side of the room. I would have liked to have thanked Jimmy for all the pleasure he had give me and other supporters over the years, but the opportunity was lost, thanks to the self-styled 'voice of football'.

Nope, was still attending games last season but started to spot him less and less often.

He still went to as many games as he could towards the end of the season, but the bowling season started again and the games often clashed with the United matches.
He was in good health and always got down to the Lane when he could, he loved going to the matches. So glad he got to see us promoted some amazing comments on here minus a couple

The truth is the truth, I'm sure BHB's story was just that and the truth never hurt anyone. No one is perfect and if they were they would not be human. Bob Jackson was exceptionally good at his job and I was glad he was at RS but there were times I thought he was overbearing to say the least. RIP Mr Jackson.

In South Yorkshire he was the voice of football grew up listening to him and put him in the same company as John Arlott, Dan Maskell Peter Osullevan,Coleman etc. All voices synonymous with their chosen field and instantly recognisable..sad loss.

I don't believe anyone has shown disrespect towards Robert Jackson. It is as you say a forum, it is not a Memorial, if it was I am sure the powers that be would have headed it so. I will say no more on the subject as this would be disrespectful to the deceased, we will agree to differ, I hope, and let it lie.
