Good pod.

I'm 26, but definitely in the anti-DOF camp if one has to be chosen. It can mean many different things, in some clubs it is a collaboration with the manager which helps, in others it takes total control over signings.

I prefer the system where the person who picks the team, formation and tactics, bonds the squad together and works with them everyday gets the final say on who comes to the club. I think Wilder has earned that right and his tranfer dealings over the years have been brilliant. (I understand that people disagree about the summer signings, but with Ramsdale coming good now, if Brewster bags 30 next season will it all still be a waste?)

For the 'bad' type of DOF - Villas Boas recently at Marseille... https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/sport/amp/football/55905232

It's not just a DOF , it's the whole recruitment strategy. Only Burnley I believe have anything like what we had with Wilder. It's a changing game and whilst I myself don't know if it's for the best what we were doing with Wilder being in control of everything was something basically no other Premier League club doed

Great pod, sad but oddly comforting at the same time. You should be charging therapist’s rates!

We won’t have another Wilder again so all we can do is hope that there is a plan and that the plan works. I can’t lie though, I’m not confident.

Agree with the comments re the prince just not having the money, brought to mind a scene in Moneyball - Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) goes to the owner to say he needs more money and is told:
"We're not gonna compete with these teams that have big budgets. We're gonna work within the constraints we have, and you're gonna do the best job that you can recruiting new players. We're not gonna pay $17 million to players. Billy, we're a small-market team, and you're a small-market GM.
I'm asking you to be okay not spending money that I don't have."

I also said were in the semi’s instead of quarters wishful thinking!

The board are to blame just as much, they should have given wilder the chance to prove his worth again as it's only been one bad season.

One thing I would say though, how many good transfer windows has Wilder had? We've wheeled and dealed really well in the early days and he's certainly got the best out of players, but we've all commented on his signings continuously over the past few years.

That could be a budget thing as well, but he used to say he didn't want players coming in earning a lot more than others as that could upset the harmony. Now we can't compete with the wages the argument is the opposite
Wilder definitely isn't whiter than white, however I'd back his viewpoint over the snippets of propaganda released by the other side any day.

Beans at 00:41:12 with one of thee most casual No's i've ever heard. Nearly spat my cuppa out when i heard that.

Evening all,

Maybe you've had your fill of Wilder content for one week, but in case you wanted to hear the fairly-balanced-if-totally-gutted thoughts of Roygbiv and I, may I present this week's episode.

A tough one to record, to be honest. But we tried to come at the subject from all angles, talking about the practical/pragmatic side of things as well as the emotional, how it got to this, and what might happen next.

Thanks for listening, UTB.

And on Apple and Spotify.

Good listen as always guys, nice to listen to a balanced view for a change.
Obviously gutted that CW has left, but also agree that the current model of Chris seemingly running everything is not sustainable.
On the subject of the big fees paid for Brewster and Berge, don't forget that these figures are amortised over the length of the contracts. Therefore as regards those two, its about £10 million per annum coming off the accounts, which if you think about the premium league money and parachute payments we have/will receive it's not a lot.

Talking of Coldplay - a snip of lyrics from The Scientist.
'It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start
I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart'

Just finished listening to this, i really enjoyed it. The sighs and the ‘i don’t knows’ are exactly how i’ve been feeling ever since it all started Friday. A lot of sense talked, well done 👏🏻

Listened twice today and would like to thank you both for your work
Very cathartic
Not bad, time to reflect and hindsight a great gift
I’ve calmed down a bit , knee jerk reaction was to blame the prince totally but not so sure now.All I can say now is that over the past 4 years we managed very well without a DOF ,wilder in his opinion thought we still didn’t need one but yes to a degree the buck stops with him, but look at the bigger picture now
A 5 nil defeat our biggest defeat in a long long time
A caretaker manager( not his fault at all ) who reminds me of a rabbit starring onto the headlights of a on coming Armageddon
The spy in the stand (Tindell) WTF is that all about and what does he know about our club, would love to look at the notes he was scribbling down
Someone see to have missed that there’s a quarter final looming , a fortuitous win and it’s a empty Wembley semi final and who nows(Wigan)
And the most gutting of all having to watch our captain close to tears (cos that what it means to him and I hope the majority of blades) do the after match interview on the touch line after the game
So yes both parties to blame but I will go and stay with dad, cos I don’t trust mum

No protest from me and waiting to hear about season ticket renewals ⚔️

Just listened to the pod, was good, I also found it quite cathartic not as depressing as I expected. At the mention of Thom Yorke I knew exactly what to put on after to cheer me right back up 🤣

This and not not having a billionaire owner tells me why the effects of Covid/loss of form//injuries could not be overcome and why the wheels began dropping off towards the end of last season. Could CW have, as many believe, gained more points this season by using different tactics and better teams/substitutions? If this is the case, I just can't understand the reason why teams were not set up to go for every point possible. In view of all the circumstances, maybe relegation was inevitable but a bit more of a fight (like we used to be renowned for) would have been appreciated.

To further the relationship analogy. Wilder and the Prince are the boyfriend/girlfriend who are breaking up, and we the fans are the kids. Won’t somebody please think of the children!!!
"Strangely proportioned mum, can I have a new striker?"
"Look, you got a Mousset for your birthday. I even got you a nice car for you to put him in but you broke it. I also got you a McBurnie but you said the legs didn't seem to fit right on the body and you couldn't assemble him properly. Then you wanted the latest Brewster cos the cool kids had one and then you complained that all he seemed to do was go side to side. Now you can go to your room."
"I dislike you intensely oddly bearded lady mum!"

You've just answered your own question. Covid and injuries.

I'm not talking about enough Premiership points for survival. There seem to be many Blades fans who think that a few more points were "doable" but never achieved because of CW's inflexibility. Would have made no difference relegation-wise but at least we would have been seen to have put up more of a fight.

"How to disappear completely" ?

You could build a whole Radiohead album for this season:

Like spinning plates
2+2=5
Stop Whispering
Bulletproof, I Wish I was
Exit Music
High & Dry
Knives out
These are my twisted words
There there
How to disappear completely.

Go To Sleep.
Let Down.
We Suck Young Blood.

In just four words and some parentheses, “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” completely sums up the attitude, mindset and performances of our lot over the past 18 months.

No Surprises (with the formation)
The formation of the last year could have its own EP or mini album. No Surprises, Pyramid Song, Fake Plastic Trees, Go Slowly... Anyone Can Play Left Centre Back.
