Evening all,

Maybe you've had your fill of Wilder content for one week, but in case you wanted to hear the fairly-balanced-if-totally-gutted thoughts of Roygbiv and I, may I present this week's episode.

A tough one to record, to be honest. But we tried to come at the subject from all angles, talking about the practical/pragmatic side of things as well as the emotional, how it got to this, and what might happen next.

Thanks for listening, UTB.

And on Apple and Spotify.

Thanks Ben.

I've got a long walk planned for tomorrow daytime as I've got a day off, so I'm certainly going to listen to this on my walk. I'm fairly sure it was a tough one to record and it will be a tough one to listen to as well, but I'm keen to spend an hour listening to what your thoughts on it are.

I'll give you my thoughts when I've listened to it.

To further the relationship analogy. Wilder and the Prince are the boyfriend/girlfriend who are breaking up, and we the fans are the kids. Won’t somebody please think of the children!!!

That's right! We are the real victims here and where's my flaming Child Support?!

I’ll listen at work in the morning and the joviality I’ve allowed back in my life today will dissipate once more 😩

Kids do you want to live with Mummy (Prince) or Daddy (Wilder)?

Daddy.

Tough, court ruled in mummy’s favour. You might see your dad every other weekend (but he’s moving to Scotland).
Could I commission you to ghost write my autobiography please? Yours parent (second class).

Gave it a listen earlier this evening and I'd strongly recommend this particular episode to any Blade.

Very rational and insightful.

Thought the two of you were able to take the emotion out of the debate when needed and provided a realistic view of the situation.

I'd say Wilder is the Mummy, cos he's just got fucked by the Prince

Roygbiv Your comment on the Hoyland interview - I thought exactly the same when I listened to it. That team had four years in the top flight for the penny to drop that they weren't that bad. I do wonder whether lockdown accelerated that with the current team - whether consciously or subconsciously. The echo chamber of lockdown, with all the adoration the team was receiving at that point, might have helped some players think they are "better" than they actually are. There are plenty of other factors at play too as we all know, but what Hoyland said did make me wonder...

I think that interview came out around November and I recall hearing that line from him and my ears pricking up. Definitely could be parallels drawn with some of the long serving players this season.

That analogy works if it's an estranged Dad (Prince) who's never around & has kids to lots of different women that he splits his time with..... & he has just murdered Mum who has been responsible almost entirely for your sound upbringing.... & he doesn't want to talk about it.

Well they only need to look at the current league table if they wish to revise their opinions of themselves.
The truth is probably somewhere between - at their best they are very good and can compete at this level, but the majority of them are nowhere near as bad as the performances they have produced this year.

Thanks for this one. I needed to hear someone talking rationally about it, as sad and depressing as it all is.

It's like tripling down on the bad feelings too given the lockdown situation.

Can't really talk to your mates about it, can't vent at a match, can only read social media polarised and frenzied reaction and everyone slagging each other off.

As sympathetic as my better half is, she has no interest in football, and I can't exactly go into the minutiae of it with her to get all my feelings and theories discussed, so it all gets pent up inside.

My 4 year old daughter likes Billy Sharp and was therefore interested when I told her I was watching his interview and was feeling bad that he looked so sad, but again I can't exactly talk to her about it 😉

Those are the only 2 options I have at the moment and so basically it all just sucks 😢. So just listening to you lads being sad and disappointed and venting a bit for an hour or so was very much needed for me. 👍

I think this is why we are seeing so many rash angry tweets and what have you. Normally people would go to the pub and slag The Prince, Wilder and whoever off. There is no outlet now other than social media.

Echoing what others have said, thanks for this. Largely stay away from social media at times like this because it's so polarised and extreme so I was looking forward to two rational people with the same passion talk about this. It's obvious it was very tough for you guys to record it, so kudos for powering through and giving us your perspectives. Keep it up, they are a bright point in an otherwise miserable season and as hard as it must be to keep recording week after week it just makes the good times all the more special to talk about!

Can't argue with much of that at all. Sums up my feelings.

I'm slowly starting to blame Wilder a bit more after my initial "Board are all wankers" reaction, more because he could have stuck it out and had a look how he got on with any changes "for the benefit of the football club".

Also why does Wilder leave now? What does he gain from abandoning ship with 10 games to go and a quarter-final if he didn't want his compensation money. The Prince literally came out a few weeks ago and said we could lose our remaining games and he would want him to be here next season. Wilder and his mates have looked at every excuse going to get out of the club before we're relegated. Either he doesnt want that on his CV or he wanted his compo money before it goes down due to relegation

The relegation doesn't have to be on his CV though really as I'd imagine most clubs he goes to in the future will check out his past and it will show a record breakingly shit season after 4 very good ones. It's not like someone walking in off the street and saying he's run a business when really he was the tea boy so I don't get the CV angle.

Your point actually makes me blame the board more as they must have really pissed him off for him to have fallen out 'irreconcilably' at this point of the season. January fair enough, but it's done now and we should be planning for next season with Wilder in charge.

Instead I think the Prince has brought his blueprint out and crossed out 2018 and put 2021 on it. For the first time since he joined Wilder can't just say "leave me to it, I've done ok so far using my methods", so they've clashed and he's gone.

I also said were in the semi’s instead of quarters wishful thinking!

The board are to blame just as much, they should have given wilder the chance to prove his worth again as it's only been one bad season.

One thing I would say though, how many good transfer windows has Wilder had? We've wheeled and dealed really well in the early days and he's certainly got the best out of players, but we've all commented on his signings continuously over the past few years.

That could be a budget thing as well, but he used to say he didn't want players coming in earning a lot more than others as that could upset the harmony. Now we can't compete with the wages the argument is the opposite
