I'm amazed that only 83% (thus far) have voted for the Blades. I'd rather United win a first round JPT game against Northampton than England win the world cup. No interest at all in the overblown, overpaid, overrated bunch of prima donna's and roll on the early flight back when they've failed to beat Italy and whoever else is in their group. Yep, genuinely don't know who else is in the group, don't care. The sooner the pseudo Engerland supporting, flag waving plastics are put back in their box, the better.

So that's a "not sure" from me.:)

I'm in an unusual place here. I feel NO connection to the England national team whatsoever and support Uruguay at international level. However, as others have said, we'll get out of the 3rd division soon, but for the rest of the country to feel an England World Cup and the effect it will have collectively would be amazing. I can remember the 1966 win, I was 12, and to replicate that would be fantastic. If it was a choice between United winning the FA cup or the Premiership, United every time

Some of the anti-English comments on here are a disgrace. If you dislike your own country so much go and live somewhere else.
Giving this a bit of thought in the morning it's not really a matter of disliking our own country rather than preferring Sheffield United to succeed instead of the England football team. The England squad has one ex-Blade and one ex-loan Blade in it, so there's not so much relevance for me as there would be for a Liverpool or Man Utd fan.

If I prefer Sheffield United to English rugby, or hockey, or rounders, or water polo does that make me a bad person too? No. So untwist your knickers. If England win the World Cup then all well and good, but the question posed was asking which we had a preference for, Sheffield United or England. For me it's United all the way given a straight choice between the two.

The question asked wasn't who we have preference for Sheffield United or England. The question was specifically, if you could pick one to happen, would it be England win the world cup this summer or the Blades get promoted out of league one next year!!!

It's still Sheffield United, all the way.

I take it you think ex blades jagielka, cahill and kyle walker (who would have played if fit) are overblown, overpaid overrated prima donna as well?

as for the fans, do the blades fans who support their country like myself fall into that category?

I do. But not because I dislike "my own" country. I simply don't feel compelled to cheer on a group of footballers who happened to have been born on the same bit of an island as I was. The idea that this attitude should be called a "disgrace" is quite bizarre.

There would be something unusually special in England winning the world cup. I would be stood shoulder to shoulder with my blade and owls mates, celebrating in union. Even when a player scores who I hate, like Gerrard scores I celebrate. I would love to see it.
The prospect of seeing Gerrard standing alone on the field malling his eyes out in front of the world seems much better.

So say the prince managed to get us to the Prem and we had players on £50k a week, would you stop supporting United?

England winning the World Cup is just another gold star on the shirt (been there, done that!)

Blades winning promotion is the start of the climb back to the top (or somwhere near).

Blades every single time.

If we're only paying £50k/week in four years time expect more Fulham than Southampton.

Get yer tin hat on McC.

how many of us can say we picked blades. surely it had to do mostly with geography and almost certainly family bias?

We had as much control over that as being born in England. Its always annoyed me that other countries, esp the Welsh will be massively patriotic about their country where we often cant be arsed. We spend more time celebrating st.paddys day than St.George's!

As for picking the best players cos they play for the best teams, its a pretty chicken and egg thing. Don't they play for the best teams cos they are the best players, or do the best teams enjoy playing crap players?

Hodgson could have picked Cleverly and Carrick but didn't, nor Ashley Cole and as folks have said, picked several players from Southampton and Everton.

Yes but he also picked Stirling and Johnson who are very average .... my guess is the Liverpool connection !
UTB & FTP

That, my dear chap, is just simply not

Blades first for me....but you can follow both and I'm a big England fan too. Winning the World Cup would be fantastic. Can't see it with the current team - but you never know.

Of course not, but I still wouldn't give a shit about Engerland. Unless perhaps, as in the early 20th century, the England team was made up mostly of Blades:)

stirling average?!! he's not even 20 yet and was killing teams this season! Liverpool almost won tho league so im really glad we've picked the on form players from an on form team. As for Johnson he is average but who else would you have taken in his place? We have no real depth of great right backs, Kyle Walker would have played but is injured, who else is there?

Derrr Brayford :)
Agree about Sterling though

You do. England will not win the next World Cup. No chance; None; Zero; Nil.

The trophy will be won by a team of excellent quality, generously blessed with truly world class players. Not England.

What about Argentina despite the bladey manager?

Has anybody actually said they hate this country? I suggest you re-read the entire thread, the answer is NO they haven't.

Some don't like the football team. I'm ambivalent, pretty much as I am with the Rugby Union bods, the Hockey players and the Athletes. Couldn't give a toss. British F1 racing drivers, pah!
England cricket team however, now you're talking. Our boxers taking on the rest of the world, yep, right behind them. That's about as far as it goes.
As for the original question, United thanks.

While I don't think England will win the World Cup (quarter finals would be a huge acheivement IMO) I think that saying the chances of England winning are zero is a bit daft. They're probably the 7th or 8th best team in the competition. It's not like they're Saudi Arabia.

Qualifying from the same group as Italy and Uruguay will be a huge achievement.

Exactly! I think Uruguay will top the group. South American team playing in their own back yard against two good Euro sides, they should get at least a draw from each of England and Italy, and will likely beat both. The key game in that group will be the England/Italy game. The winner of that will finish 2nd. My mate, (who's English but has Italian roots, so is more attached to Italy) reckon England will win that game. Apparently Italy's squad is weaker than 2 years ago. So I think it's all to play for, really. That's assuming we don't slip up against Costa Rica.

The same Uruguay whose strongest side scraped to a 1-0 over Northern Ireland on Friday? Or the same Italy who drew 0-0 with Republic of Ireland a day later?

(I'm not disagreeing with you by the way, I just don't think Italy and Uruguay are as good as people are making them out to be. They won't be looking forward to playing us just as much as we aren't looking forward to playing them).

England winning the World Cup for me.

It will be inevitable that we get promoted out of this godforsaken sooner or later, it is probably unlikely England will win a World Cup in my lifetime.

Compare the feeling of the Blades winning something substantial like the FA Cup, then transport that feeling over to England, and the vast majority of the country feeling exactly the same, and how absolutely everyone and everything will be absolutely rocking. That is what it would be like.

Never gonna happen though

My thoughts exactly.

It this was "'England win the World Cup' or 'Blades win the Premier League/FA Cup'?" then it's the Blades all day long, but if we're talking about a simple promotion from chuffing League One then I'm sorry but the answer is England without a doubt. I normally don't care for the national side but the feelgood factor around the country if we were to win it would be like it was during the 2012 Olympics but about 100 times bigger. Seeing England do something as special as win the World Cup is literally a once in a lifetime opportunity; seeing United get promoted from League One is not.

Agree with that, and the way i see it,is if england were to astonishingly win the world cup ,were more than likely going to see both happen imo:DThat wouldn't be a bad year now would it.Football's a funny old game.:p

World cup will be over before midnight as Italy's second goal hits the back of the net.

We'll not even make the second day.
