If the England team was picked from Championship players rather than so called Premiership stars who's only claim to fame is playing once or twice for Man U's B team then I might just have a slight interest in the national team. I am a football fan. I love years ending in an even number. The World Cup will be on in my house and I'll be watching most matches but not all, given that there are a few 2:00 am kick-offs. I'll not be too disappointed when England get knocked out, but I will be disappointed when I watch the inevitable crap match, of which it is certain there will be at least one and possibly quite a few more. I want to watch entertaining tournament football on my telly.

I'm not really an England supporter. I support Sheffield United. I'd swap almost anything for some Blades glory, including everything to do with any other football team, up to and including England. If I could make an arrangement with the footballing gods where England got thrashed 10-0 in every match in Brazil in exchange for United getting promoted next May then I'd do it like a shot.

Blades or England? You may as well ask me if I'd prefer Blades glory or getting kicked in the bollocks.

Sadly, most folks have said Blades and most footie fans would say the same about their team, which shows how poor the support for the national team has got.

Even players like Carragher said it felt worse losing for Liverpool than England which is pathetic really. The pinnacle of football is playing for your country at a world cup and winning .Surely that's what we should strive for not every club fan prefering the success of their own team to that?

Its baffling to me why so few people support our country with the same passion as the local team.

It's baffling to me why so many people obsess over the country they were born in - a fluke of geography over which they had no control.

The suggestion that I should share some sort of solidarity with a person born in Carlisle but not one born 10 miles away in Gretna is fundamentally absurd.

England to win World Cup for me. I'm sure I will see promotions and relegations regarding the blades on a good few more occasions before I die. I doubt I'll ever see England win the World Cup.

I don't understand why people say "I have no interest in England"... They're our countries best players, just because they earn a staggering amount of money doesn't mean I don't support them.

World cups and Euros are times in your life when the whole country unites... What's not to like?

The main reason why people have no passion for our national football team is that the players themselves have no passion for it. There is no longer anything special about playing for your country and the attitude comes across to the fans.

If you look at other sports: the rugby world cup winning team of 2003, the ashes winning team of 2005, when an England team is doing well, playing with passion and the whole country is hooked, there isn't much better.

Also for people saying it's a stupid question/thread, the question isn't who do you prefer - England or United for which I'm sure the response would be 100% for the latter, it's a specific question of which you would prefer to happen this year if you could pick one!

Chris Smalling getting picked just shows that we haven't got a great pool of talent to choose from.

I agree he isn't very good, but who would you take instead of him? Any player you could name would be debatable.

Your comment reminds me of when Adam Johnson was moaning cause he wasn't being picked cause he's at Sunderland! When 3 Southampton players have been picked, it proves Hodgson is picking the squad on merit.

It will be inevitable that we get promoted out of this godforsaken sooner or later, it is probably unlikely England will win a World Cup in my lifetime.

Compare the feeling of the Blades winning something substantial like the FA Cup, then transport that feeling over to England, and the vast majority of the country feeling exactly the same, and how absolutely everyone and everything will be absolutely rocking. That is what it would be like.

Unfortunately they're not Englands best players. They are the players who play for the high profile Clubs ( largely)

The thing is nobody complains about someone waving a Welsh flag or a Scotland flag and the Irish can take their patriotism to a even higher level.
