Similar for me, drove up from Kettering for the game v Northampton ( of all places ) in 1982 when I saw on football focus in the window of a tv shop that the game was off. Went city shopping instead. Not an away game but felt like one. Reading at home some years back was called off just as I got to the ground having just driven up from Reading.....
My all-time favourite away ground ever.Boro 86 or 87.
It was called off the day before, but I was tying it in with visiting a mate, so went anyway. We walked down to Ayresome Park at 3pm anyway, as there's bugger all else to do in Smogsville.
I didn't go to the rearranged game, so Ayresome Park remained unvisited for me.
Yep both of those. Think they're actually the only 2 that i've experiencedleyton orient in the fa cup I think 2009 .
Last one was Peterborough away one freezing Saturday, a
Leyton Orient away, frozen pitch. Pissed as a fart so I wouldn’t have seen the match anyway!
Met Gary a few times in handsworth .Gillingham 1983.
7.00 to St Pancras.
Legged it to Finsbury Park to drop off luggage at mates flat as working in London following week.
Back to London Victoria to meet some "London Blades".
Got train (no heating fucking freezing), as soon as we got out of London, really heavy snow.
Got to Gillingham, went to a pub near station, odd looks from locals.
Match off........ snow.
Back to London (no heating fucking freezing).
Vague memories of being informally interviewed by a young Gary Armstrong (Social anthropologist, lecturer and writer); maybe wrong on this, had a couple in the pub and suffering the onset of hypothermia, brain addled.
Yellow Rose still there, my son lives about 800 yards away from it.My all-time favourite away ground ever.
Always a great but dangerous trip , only time I've ever left a ground early when they battered us 6-0, they had some team back then . I think bruce rioch was manager .
One of my favourite games was the 3-3 draw there ..
You had to have balls of steel to drink on the linthorpe road in the yellow or red rose pub .
I have a copy.Met Gary a few times in handsworth .
Wrote the knowing the score book well before others.
I got slashed there. The 1-0 defeat in mid 80s .Yellow Rose still there, my son lives about 800 yards away from it.
I was in there before the 6-0. Proper grim.
I was at Kilmarnock. I'd only recently moved up and was pleased to discover it was only 30 mins drive away. Remember seeing some Tinsley Blades there, bumped in to them at Wembley last April and we were laughing recalling that evening.Budapest for the ferencvaros game is by far the furthest I've been for a cancelled game and we had been in the stadium 45 minutes when a torrential thunderstorm called the game off much to the displeasure of around a hundred blades.
I've seen the blades in Scotland many times on tours but I got lucky the year I think it was killmarnock we were playing in a friendly and I couldn't make it but a fair few blades went up and I'm sure it got called off late in the day.
In the back of a box van that night !! With about 20mins. of the game remaining we were on the top of a hillside overlooking the floodlights . Was a pub nearby , had a couple of pints in there , then started to make our way back .Another one I actually thought would and dhould have been called off was the f.a. cup replay at turf Moor Burnley when we won 4-2.
Was it nearly 5,000 blades and most arrived at half time.
We all got stuck on the m62 due to accident . We had hardly any support in the ground till half time and blades were wanting the game off .
When we finally arrived a blade had died near the turnstiles of heart attack .
Great result on our way to the semis but what an evil trip that was .
Yes the graveyard is still there. The old ground is now a housing estate with street names named after the old timers - Maddren Way, Clough Close etc.I got slashed there. The 1-0 defeat in mid 80s .
Idiot I went with had a blades badge on. Luckily I had a bomber jacket on .
Still went back every year after . The atmosphere was unreal even though they had poor support at the time. If memory serves me right there was a graveyard near the ground.
I'm still up there every few months as my mate runs the red deer pub in Stockton.
You may know a few of the greenock morton lads who follow the blades . Been up to see the blades there.I was at Kilmarnock. I'd only recently moved up and was pleased to discover it was only 30 mins drive away. Remember seeing some Tinsley Blades there, bumped in to them at Wembley last April and we were laughing recalling that evening.
The game went ahead. They were winning 1-0 when it was abandoned after around 60 mins as the ball wasn't moving.
Looking back it was a weird one, a midweek friendly in Scotland on March 6th. Can only imagine it was as we didn't have a game the following Sat (FACup QF day).
It worked wonders though and made my drive back home for the next game well worthwhile - arise Sir Bobby Davison![]()
Yes, met them on the train down to Carlisle away a couple of trains. You may know a few of the greenock morton lads who follow the blades . Been up to see the blades there.
Big Jimmy who died few years ago .
There's always a flag at morton games with blades crest on it. They Come to the lane couple times a season.
Rough old place.Yes the graveyard is still there. The old ground is now a housing estate with street names named after the old timers - Maddren Way, Clough Close etc.
I'm getting married up you're way in July in gretna at Mill Farm.Yes, met them on the train down to Carlisle away a couple of trains.
Yes pal .More pics from the Ferencvaros trip.
If I’m not mistaken that’s you on the one with the flags derbysufc
This has happened to me 3 times in my 55 years as a blade.
First was a night game at scunthorpe at the old show ground around early 80s.
We got there early on a Tuesday evening through thick fog but heard nothing on the car radio to say the game would be called off.
Parked up went to a pub and was told by the landlord the game was off.
I wasn't old enough to drive back then but the bloke who had drove was going mad, it had been called off an hour before
Luckily I'd been twice before in 81/82 plus a friendly there .
Next up was leyton orient in the fa cup I think 2009 .
Went down by train arrived in East London around 10am , had a few pints and hundreds of blades were in the boozers when the coppers came in and said the game was off due to a frozen pitch . To say blades fans were angry is an understatement.
We had booked set times home on the train and ours was due to leave London around 8pm so we searched for a game to attend.
We had a choice , I think it was Barnet v grimsby which then got called off or yet another visit to millwall who were playing crewe in the fa cup.
I was sick of visiting the den but it was our only option . It ended an entertaining 2-2 draw but the funny thing was sitting with the crewe support , fair play crewe took around 200 noisy supporters but around 50 blades boosted crewe support . At half time everywhere I looked were blades I knew on the concourse including a blades flag and crewe fans were praising blades for backing them.
Last one was Peterborough away one freezing Saturday, again we arrived very early by train and took a real ale boozer over the brewery tap or something and dozens of blades flags hung on the balcony. We were told again near kick off by coppers the game was off again passing off huge numbers of blades.
With no game to go to we had a few pints and headed home , the coppers had made the train home alcohol free but a few of us got beers on board.
I managed to get to both re arranged games but it was costly .
One other I remember thinking that's it the games off was Portsmouth away the year the blades fan ran on the pitch at pompey and knocked the linesman clean out sparko.
There was a huge delay and word was going around it could be postponed.
Anyone else had similar ?
I still sit with Jowitt on KopYes pal .
Look a bit different now though.
Moved away from sheffield almost 7 years ago . I was the one with all the handsworth flags in years gone by.
Now settled , 2 step kids and beautiful partner and live in whats classed as the south end of derby .
In Budapest there was handsworth , intake , Buxton and Norton blades plus Norfolk Park. We met in the szimpla bar each night.
Had jowett and Oliver on my flight from Luton.
