Outgoing? Billy Sharp

We have a back up striker who scored 12+ last season and scored vital goals as well as offering veteran leadership.

But you're right lets spend precious funds from our limited transfer budget trying to replace him.

I'd much rather Wilder spent money on defenders, defenders and if there is any money left - more defenders. Our inability to keep clean sheets was our glaring weakness last season not our reserve striker.
Out of the back 3/5 of Stevens, Bash, Stearman, Magic jack and baldock who would you drop though? If anything a good keepe is whats needed

I'd say all 5 have elements of their game they need to improve if we're to make the leap from 10th to top 6.

Stearman and Basham would be the obvious ones to look for upgrades. Stearman is a solid 6/10 player but we simply need someone better in that role. Basham proved me wrong last season, but defensively he just looks short at that level especially when a team puts us under sustained pressure. Having said that JoC needs to work in his concentration, especially later in games; and both Wing Backs need to be more consistent and know when to tuck in and defend.

Like I say, they all had good seasons, but if our ambition is to break the top 6 and higher, we need to be ruthless. Part of being ruthless is keeping clean sheets, and we were awful at that last season. Barnsley away summed up this in a nutshell..

Last season we showed up until Jan (when we were top) our first 11 is more than capable of doing well. We showed a lack of depth towards the end of the season.

We need to push everyone to do better. Last season we were carrying some league one players like Carruthers. Hopefully if all goes to plan players like him will move on and we will progress.

But CW in the market for 2 Strikers so there will be some competition. As this season Lavery / Hanson were exactly pushing our first team players. If we sign players like Hogan / Moore / Gallagher or whoever they will provide genuine competition. Which is healthy.

Talked to Roth chairmans brother other day...We were willing to let Sharp talk to Rotherham ..but he wasn't interested...so this rumour is now finito...

We were willing to let Billy talk to Rotherham?

If that’s true then it’s utter shameful, soul destroying or means we have a total of atleast £30m in the transfer budget?

For me we can ill afford to let Billy go anywhere anytime soon, it’s just not viable at present.

Wilder showed what he thought that Sharp added by the amount of times he was played towards the end of the season.

Which was bizarre given that NONE of our other options were consistently at it. Baffling misuse of a proven striker in decent form.

But it does become clear that when the new blood arrives, it’s Sharp that will fall down the order.

I’m not liking that because Billy wall fall down the order, I’m liking that because I think it’s bang on the money which will be a real shame considering what Billy has done in his latest stint for us.

I completely disagree. If Billy isn't going to start next season then it's only right to allow him the opportunity to leave if he so wishes. He's been a great servant to the club and it's a mark of respect that we allow him to make his own choices and not prevent him from moving.

Billy probably will have a season or two out in the States...don't think it will be the 2018/19 one though...

It's not....but if the 2 rumored strikers arrive it is fair to say one of Billy, Leon or Ched will struggle for game time so I would expect one of them to leave....

interestingly in the photos knocking about of pre-season training I have seen Billy & Leon but not Ched.....unless I have missed something.....could mean something, (probably on the physios couch to be fair!)

There’s a training video they put up where Ched Evans is clearly visible in receiving the ball, and flicking it. He appeared not to injure himself in the process.

On a potential move to the MLS, 5:45 in the interview with Staton.
“[The rumour’s] been going around for a few years now. I still know I can score goals in the Championship, and I want to keep doing that for this club for as long as I can. I’ve got a year left, I’d love to stay longer. I honestly can’t see myself going anywhere else in England after this move so I want to keep playing for Sheff United for as long as possible...”

That’s exactly my point, he doesn’t wish to go anywhere so we shouldn’t be giving teams like Rotherham, who couldn’t afford his wages, the time to speak to him, making him feel like he’s no longer wanted here and that’s why I wrote the second paragraph of the post you replied to, r666.

How do you know he doesn't want to go anywhere? He's likely to not start that many games this season, so he may want to go somewhere where he's playing regularly. He's 32, so he may want one last big move before he retires. Personally, I think he'll go to the MLS in January or next summer. But I don't know him obviously. My point was, it's basic manners to tell him someone's enquired IF he's going to be our 3rd or 4th choice striker.

Amongst other things, read post #79 mate.

Literally no chance we sell him while ched and Lavery are on their way and we’ve already lost Hanson, Donaldson and Wilson from last seasons squad.

Unless we’re fancying playing 5 a side next season.

We already need 2 strikers minimum.
