Ah it wasn't dejavu, see post #721 about odds meaning diddly squat.
Please explain why the odds are there in the first place then ?

Dress it up however you so wish, we now have the bookies (and only the bookies) FAVORITE for L1 golden boot.
Be grateful for that.

How do you have that opinion when we were favourites last season and finished nowhere near automatic promotion?

Because we WERE fucking favs Bob. Mostly down to having a big L1 budget and a magnificent run after Clough took over that saw us move out of relegation zone to 7th. Was this such a surprise given this ? the hindsight is irrelevant.

Bookies don't always get it right. Backing the favorite horse in every race will not generally show a profit. Neither is it certain Sharp will be any where near top scorers. But the EVIDENCE suggests he should be there or thereabouts.

We will see.

May as well make myself clear here, I have previously said I wouldn't want Sharp back.
I feel the money spent securing Sharps return could have been better spent elsewhere in the team at this moment. Although, that said, it is awesome having a proven goal scorer in the side, playing for a manager that has played him effectively in the past. IMHO unless we do secure the services of a quality CB, it will be close. Play offs again... ...

I would agree with your view if signing Sharp and a good quality new centre-back were mutually exclusive. I think we will find out quite soon they are not...

At the risk of repeating myself (something I steadfastly avoid) signings don't have to happen in chronological order of importance.

But whilst bookies odds may or may not reflect the evidence they are not evidence in themselves.

I hope you are right about BS, but if you are it won't be because the bookies made him favourite, it will be because of the things that you say cause the bookies to make him favourite!

Confused? You will be....

No I am not confused by this Pinch. The exact opposite in fact.

Bookies offer odds based on EVIDENCE. They don't offer odds on a whim and a prayer hunch.

I think we see eye to eye on this point at least !

To a point, but the odds reflect the amount of money wagered. As more bets are put on, the odds fall so as to reduce the bookies' exposure. We are the biggest team in the crappy division and have the most fans, hence more money will be put on United bets than any other team.

Why do you think Ingerland go into every World Cup at such ridiculously short odds? This reflects the weight of money behind us and not our realistic chances.

BS will be fave top scorer and SUFC faves to win the league simply because the bookies do not need to offer 'value' to attract our dosh. There are lots of us and we place the bets anyway.

Agree with every word.

But like you say, only to a point.

Sharp has just signed. I assume precious little has been wagered thus far. Which can not, by itself, rationalise his favouritism. It has to be other factors. Now what might they be ........

At this point it's turning in to a circular argument that screams "what the hell does it matter?"

Put a few bob on Billy to be top scorer and if he is then win money back. It's not debating the stringier points of quantum theory you know..

Oh by God it matters PPC.

As Jim Phipps has said, more and more bits of the jig saw will start to fall in to place. This is one of them.

Might as well add to the post I've just written about Sammon, I wasn't keen on Sharp being signed but it's now history, Billy has signed and I wish him well, as I do any player we have at the Lane.......now for the defence, which I kind of know Adkins will be working flat out to bring in suitable quality. With that, and I hope midfield improvements (could it be Wallace and Cuvelier?), we'll be serious contenders this time round.

sharpy has now signed and we have got to give adkins time to get on with the job,he clearly knows how to get the best out
of billy, and that is obviously NOT playing him out of position like other managers have, can i just remind some of the knockers on here
that rooney was played out of positon under fergies tenure and he was piss poor and was,nt half as effective as he is in his normal
role, now for me billy sharp is now OUR player and i will support the boy when he puts on the red & white stripes. rant over !

Agreed pal, any player who wears the Blades shirt gets 100% support from me, whatever happens, and if he is an honest grafter, he gets applause when he comes back to BDTBL for another club.

Don't hold your breath over Wallace, late sub today, he should have been looking to put in 60/70 minutes today if he was anything like.

Hull then should have been a full game.

I'm not very hopeful for him.

You get to more games than I'm able to Grumpy so I trust your view. I hope you're wrong of course, but we'll soon see if he figures in our first games.

That is not true. Sharps last goal in 2008-9 was in September against Coventry.

"League goal". He scored 1 in 15 up until Beattie left on the 12th Jan. After that he scored 2 in 6 getting stretchered off in the 6th game.

2 in 6 over the season is 15+. Therefore his form improved after Beattie left.

I don't think Wallace is a first choice at the moment. Simple as that.
He will probably play the full game against Macclesfield with the rest of the second string and the first team will resume against Hull.
