I hope we do sign him. My cousin played with him at youth level for Forest and rates him very highly.

He’s got a good left foot, works hard, likes a tackle and can shoot from distance.

This could be a good signing for us, even as a squad player.
This is also what he had to say about him.

I’ll ignore the Maupay bit for now...

A good signing that we can hopefully get done quickly.

Find if amusing that the players we're buying from the Championship aren't of the requisite standard, yet Villa are spending big bucks to reassemble the team that finished below us in the Championship last season and no-one says anything about them.

And who has the best manager in the country?

Man City?

Is Osborn the best we can do for 3.5m?

Given our record is around 4m, or 5m+ now we signed Freeman, aren't there any free transfers around, cheaper buys or promising young players who can play the role of back up left back and 4th or 5th choice midfielder if Morrison is kept on? 3.5m is a decent wedge.

Just seems a bit steep for us for someone who is so underwhelming to Forest fans.

Why not get Marcus Maddison from Peterboro for a fraction of that? He can cover LWB, can cover LCM and can even cover Duffy. Has an outrageous output in terms of assist plus goals. Think I'd be far more intrigued with 2m on him than 3.5m on a left footed but not as good Monty.

To be honest, even though I have been dead against it, if we are not using the loan market that much, I'd rather take Dowell back for a year than splurge such a fee on a bit part player. He did ok covering LWB, can play the other midfield roles and Stevens is a shoo-in when fit anyway.

Maybe the manager think he's better than maddison

He's a different player to Maddison, more suitable at LWB and is nothing like a 'left footed Monty', FFS.

If we were to sign someone instead of him I'd rather it be someone to cover LCB and LWB rather than LWB and LCM.

Maybe he does. He doesn't enjoy the best write up from his own fans.

Maddison was just an example. Not the only alternative. I just don't want us to waste money on a back up who won't play.

He is different to MM. Agree, but they could still both cover LWB if required.

What sort of player do you see him as? He's certainly getting plenty of pelters from his own fans.

Agree I'd rather get a better version of Lynch and sign up Morrison.

We'd have Morrison, Fleck, Norwood, Lundstram, Duffy and Freeman not to mention Basham who can add to the mix if required. McGoldrick can also cover Duffy. There's 8 less matches. How many midfielder do we need?

I think we need an aggressive ball-winning midfielder to give Fleck some competition, because Fleck's just about the only midfielder we've got that can tackle. I like the sound of the guy Hogg at Huddersfield. Seen some great pictures of him feighting and getting sent off. That's just what we need! A bit of a hothead in midfield who's going to kick some ass.

Ben Osborn is a good player though from what I've seen. But like some say, he's a "utility" player, and generally I'm not keen on utility players. Jack of all trades, master of none. Basham is probably the only utility player I've ever appreciated. Back in the day we used to have one called Steve Charles. 100% effort every game, but didn't do any one thing particularly well.

He's a decent technical player who'll offer energy and drive down the left side and put some good crosses in.

He's more Stephen Quinn than Monty. But more of a natural wide player and a bit more athletic.

My mate supports Forest and said he’d be “fuming” if he leaves and says he feels he’s been made a bit of a scapegoat at Forest, and it would be a steal if we got him for what we’ve allegedly bid.

I’ve seen him a couple of times, not enough to form a real opinion, but could be a great signing if it were to happen.

My mates also a Forest fan - summary is: decent utility player - always good to have a player that can fill a variety of positions so if available for the role but price it makes sense

I get what you mean with your first sentence. I have no issue with signing this guy but I keep asking "If we'd have been looking to spend £3m on him last summer, would I have been as 'ok' with it?". I'm not sure I would have been.

But we didn’t. A playing being bought as a back up for a PL team will cost more than a player being bought as backup for a championship team. £3m is fuck all at the level we’re at now. It’s not even a big sum for a championship player.

Is he not the same player regardless of who he's singing for?

Good answer, I'm glad you see my point.
It’s a basic principle of transfer valuation. If you buy a player for the championship you pay a fee that reflects that. If you’re buying a player to play in the PL, you’re assuming he has the potential to play in the PL and have to pay a premium for that. If Man City wanted him, they’d be expected to pay even more as he’s deemed to have the potential to play in the champions league.

You know this.

Agree, £3m isn’t very much at all for someone at the right ages with 200+ championship games.

Essentially his versatility means we are getting 2 players in one. A back up left back back and a defensive midfielder (plus midfield cover).

To me, it’s a sensible move. Especially, if we weee to buy these things separately it would probably cost us double.

How much would have been worth last year then? Has his potential to play in the PL

I get your logic but it doesn't always work that way, otherwise you'd never see lower league players signing for Premiership teams for relatively little.

Note: I started off by saying that I'd have no issue with this signing for this amount, I was merely commenting on how I'd have felt spending the same amount last season. It was a comment on how having a bit of money to spend changes your thinking. I'm not sure why this has got your back up so much.

It didn’t. Your second reply about a player being the same whatever level they sign at did, because you’re an intelligent poster who understands football. If you meant ‘It was a comment on how having a bit of money to spend changes your thinking’ it would have saved us both time if you’d have said that instead of ‘is he not the same player regardless of who he is signing for?’ because I’d have just agreed with you.

Got to get it right though this time. Wilder for past few seasons has got it wrong at the start of the season and brought in players by the end of August not this season though.
Seriously? I am staggered by the negativity in that statement. We have just witnessed three incredible seasons and you choose to fret over the first few games. Mate that half empty glass of yours needs topping up ;) . The first few games are nothing more than finding out your best team and system surely. Not do or die. It actually took a wee bit longer for Chris and Alan to see which pieces of the jigsaw didn't fit and unlike many managers, selected some fresh ones and hey presto, well we all know how that turned out. Or did you miss something?

Chill dude, we are in the Prem and you ought to be wetting yourself with excitement at the very thought. What a time to be a Blade eh??? UTB.

The gravity of what we've achieved against all odds and constrictions (upstairs) is clearly lost on some, by comparison it's not quite Brian Clough and notts forest level of unbelievable, it's closer to Leicester winning the prem though..

Wilder is key to this, and his decisions have been key, his strength in the boardroom has been key as well, a few Duff signings among the diamonds, I can live with that if these re the results..

We were supposed to be strugglers in the champ, and I believe although it'll be tough we will stop up this season and again overachieve.

Osborn played in Forest's friendly in Greece tonight. 👀 👀 👀 🤔 🤔 👀
