They were able to pick him up for £500k because he had a few months left on his deal & could walk on a free at the end of it. I wouldn't use that figure as an accurate assessment of his market value.
Cant see any club paying any thing near 5 million 2 at the most if they want him off there payroll.
His wages will be a stumbling block, there is a lack of money in the EFL dont forget!!!.

I think £2-3m would be realistic, yes.

This. He wanted to leave, could walk for free and was on relatively big wages for them.

£5 million sounds like a fair price for what would be one of the best CBs in the Championship. 28. Good enough to be signed by the then champions as possible cover. Davies and Egan would be a solid pairing.

I don't think we'll spend £5 million on one player unless we're selling either Ramsdale or Berge though.

Finlay, spot on re the wages, Liverpool paid virtually nothing for him so they would have been paying him a LOT of money.

No way does any championship side match the salary he's on at Liverpool and pay a decent fee for him

What evidence is there to suggest he'd be one of the best CBs in the country? It's a massive gamble IMO. He's certainly plied his trade around the lower leagues for experience but I just don't get the hype. Player of the season for Preston 3 years ago. Meh.

I think he would still be a good signing for us.

Probably £2M if you want to get into the auction with the other interested clubs at the end of the window. You want to tie it up before Saturday you have to pay a premium. Either shit or get off the pot, as it were.

Agree with everything here. Purely by moving to Liverpool there’s a premium added to his value.

It seemed an ideal move for us in January, I suspect it didn’t happen due to knowledge Liverpool were also interested, or the purse strings being firmly shut with the CW relationship breaking down.

Either way, it’s a very obvious transfer for any high end Championship club, or even lower end Prem. He’ll come to whichever club blinks first. Personally, I do hope it’s us, I think he’d be a very good addition. But it’s an expensive auction to win.

It we can get him on a loan with a view (sounds like an unmade Merchant Ivory flick) then £5M is worth doing if he’s deemed as our solution at LCB. Next summer we’ve either gone up or are rebuilding having sold off the main assets cheaper than we would have hoped.

That would be ideal, I agree. But I imagine Liverpool will be waiting out until August 31st for a transfer, and there’d be significant competition for a loan move if that’s how it transpires.

Shit for all concerned, but then we should have signed him last summer. Conversely if we sell Berge or Ramsdale then I imagine we’ll be happier to part with cash and find a transfer.

Honestly, if we’ve identified him as the one we need, I reckon the Prince will dig deep again and fund it, accepting the risk to just get it done.

Some ifs….

If he’s miles away from Liverpool’s first team, it’s in their interest to have him out on loan accruing value.

If no other club want to pay his wages in full, then they will surely consider subsidising them to get him in the shop window.

If we agree to buy in the event of promotion, then his loan becomes even more realistic.

And…

If a wealthier club than us come along, we’re screwed. :)

Doesn’t matter what he did cost his current club. It’s irrelevant.
What’s relevant is that he is an excellent CB and we desperately need an excellent CB and therefore worth £4-5m so just pay the price and get promoted.

Rather than bringing in Davies (and I do rate him) is this an opportunity to blood one of the 23's? Lopata Gomis Belehouen Gordon? If we do get promoted would these lads get a look in? If they're rated, the championship will be less forgiving than the prem and surely this is the tome to see if they can cut it.

Got a feeling we're going to be gazumped for Davies unfortunately. Celtic and Bournemouth both likely ahead in the pecking order.

Liverpool have absolutely ruined this guy's career potentially.

Picked him up due to his contract situation and as insurance.

Didn't give him any PL appearances at all and therefore given no indication if he can play above Championship level.

Put him on a wage most Championship clubs will probably baulk at.

Because he's now under contract and not got contract expiring anymore, they want to sell for about 4m more than they paid.

So, he's no more proven, on much higher wages and his fee has quintupled.

He's now 5th pick centre half.

They are turning down loan offers because they want the money but few Clubs will be able to afford both his new wage expectations and the inflated fee.

So they won't pick him, yet set prohibitive demands for others to give him game time.

What a set of selfish twats they are.

Keep seeing this £500,000 that Liverpool paid. Everywhere I look it says they paid £1.6 million. It is also widely reported he is on £60,000 per week on a 6 year deal.

This makes it really difficult for any teams out of the premier league to afford him.

If they wanted rid and Liverpool paid half his wages to get him off the books that will mean an outlay of £10.6 million and he will never have played 1 minute of football. So even if they got a £5 million fee based on the above - they still lose big time on him

If the cost of getting Davies is financially prohibitive then I hope we move on to other targets. The lads a very decent Championship standard player (who managed to get a dream move on a very high salary) but he is still a player who has spent a large part of his career at PNE where he hardly stood out as the next Baresi. In short, either Liverpool actually want him gone so that they can trim the size of their squad, or they don't. If they do, then they will have to assist the buying club to help them make it happen / recompense the player under contract, or the buying club will look elsewhere. I can't see anyone else in the PL or anyone else paying a £5m transfer fee for the lad and then paying him sky high wages with agents fees added on top.

I see it as the other way around. Time for Liverpool to make a move to grease the wheels of a transfer, or as a potential buying club, we look elsewhere. Pity for the lad himself but then he was more than happy to sign that very lucrative contract.

Can't see this one happening unless Liverpool virtually give the lad away for a nominal fee which then allows the buying club some financial wriggle room with the player and the agent such as agreeing a signing on payment to offset his large contract with Liverpool.

Might be time to move on to other targets as I think he is possibly being priced out of a potential move.

We have been told that there will be a list of 5 to 6 players but last year our manager refused to move on from his no.1. I doubt we will make the same mistake again.

I don’t think that you can say Liverpool have ruined his career. He was given a fantastic opportunity to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world and offered a lot of money to be there. As far as I understand it, he has been injured most of the time and not in contention for a place in the team/squad. It’s now up to him if he wants to go back to a realistic level of football and salary but if he would prefer being a 6th choice and carry on picking up £60k pw (which I can understand) then that’s his choice and not Liverpool’s.

Which is something Liverpool just don't do. They have one of the best DoF's going around highly lauded by Klopp and their fans. Liverpool play the market to get what's best for them with skant regard to the players future. We've been duped by them twice before. Let's not go for the hattrick.

You're right, but it's the way of the shark infested footballing PL world right now.
Does he want to just exist on whatever wage he's getting now, or the cut and thrust of 1st team football, albeit in the Championship, which must be better than what he's not playing at the moment.
Having said that, he's more than likely to have to do what Liverpool tell him having taken the Queen's shilling so to speak.

6 year contract ! Pull other one !!.
To be fair to the player he has to go on loan or be sold, Champagneblade is spot on.

The Championship is not the country
You're really going to argue that you don't need to be one one of the best CBs in the country to play in the Championship? Any idea what percentage of people play football in this country?

If its true that he is on silly money and Liverpool want a big fee for him, why are we still messing about? The Prince claimed that one of the problems with Wilder was that he didn't give them options when looking for players and he wanted 2/3 targets. Seems to me nothing has changed.

Exactly, if the Prince is true to his word then strike the pencil through his name and move on to the next option, (if there is one)
