Yes he had a very impressive season at kv Mechelen before you signed him. I guess his transfer was also a bit to do one over kv Mechelen as revenge for their legal battle in their matchfixing case. They won an appeal reducing their penalty for matchfixing from relegation to exclusion from the cup and European football for 1 season which meant that Beerschot was not promoted that season. Then Van Winckel told Verrips that he could terminate his contract at kv Mechelen because they were still convicted for matchfixing which happened the season before Verrips signed and qualified as a severe fault by the employer harming the reputation of the employee. Verrips did that and signed on a free. KV Mechelen also appealed against this with fifa and that’s why Verrips was not eligible to play for the first months. I think in the end you paid a limited amount to kv Mechelen to stop the procedure with fifa and get him match eligible. Probably not the best start for Verrips and he was on a side track from the start. Still deserves a chance I think.

Our new head coach is the 28 year old Will Still. He is promoted from assistant to head coach. Youngest coach ever in Belgian first division. I hope the owners back him now with some much needed re-enforcements. They were in for a loan deal for Siebe Schrijvers from Club Brugge but OHL (Leicester’s affiliated club) came up with the cash for a permanent transfer. They also signed Benkovic and Andy King from Leicester.

The season is over for us, ending 9th from 18 clubs, just outside the play offs. The sale of Tissoudali in January blew our ambitions out of the window, and the transfer of our success manager to DC United did not help either, very disappointing from our owners. Now we have a lot of work to re-build the squad, we need 6-8 really good new players to avoid a relegation battle next season or we repeat the faith of the Blades with a good first season but just missing out because of a poor season ending and the a dramatic second season at the top. The prince increased his shareholding from 50% to 75% recently. Not too happy about that. I was more in favor of our local shareholders retaining 50%.

According to Transfermarkt he went for 750k yet they seem to value him over 3x that amount. Any reason for that? Was he out of contract in the summer or does the website have his fee or valuation wrong?

Certainly selling to a rival, who then goes on to make the play offs, can't have been deemed too smart though I don't know the budget agreed, 750k if true seems neither here nor there.

How did things go with the new manager? Has he shown promise or was he just the cheap.option because he was there?

What are your thoughts on Raphael Holzhauser for next season? Do you think he could move on and would he be a good option for the Blades?
16 goals and 16 assists from midfield is surely going to attract some attention?

There are many teams interested in him. He has demanded that the squad is improved or he will leave. There was serious interest from Besiktas in the winter. He is the type of player who wants to feel important and prefers to be the King in a sub top team then just one of the many in a better team. But he wants the board to show ambition and improve on this season. So to be seen if our owners can satisfy his demands. He has stated a number of times that he only wants to play in a first division so would think that rules out a move to the Championship. Apart from the engine and more high speed running capability he comes very close to De Bruyne. Same passing, close control and shooting skills, just smaller engine.

Perhaps a move to England may not be the wisest for him anyway then with the pace of the game over if he doesn’t have the greatest engine.

Not really the premier league is a league of athletes first skill second. The truly great players have both but the baseline seems to be being a top athlete. There used to be room for older slower players with skill in the championship but it seems like that’s ended in the last few years.

He has bags of experience in Belgian first division and won a couple of cups as well with smaller teams. A bit the Belgian version of Sam Allardyce. Experienced manager who knows what it takes to have a safe season and maybe cause a cup up-set. General feeling is positive. This was certainly not the cheapest option available and he will have asked guarantees to strengthen the squad.

Yes very pleased with this appointment as there were fears that we would go for the cheapest option and have little investment this summer. Also next season is huge since the competition format is changed from 18 to 16 clubs meaning that 3 clubs will be relegated next season and only 1 club will be promoted. To avoid relegation we needed an experienced manager and some important transfers. The fact that they bought away Maes at Sint Truiden who wanted to keep Maes as he was doing a good job there is seen as a sign of ambition. Media are quite surprised by this move and Maes is quoted that he moved because there is a much more ambitious project at Beerschot. Whether that is the usual bla bla or sincere is to be seen but the guy has so much experience at the highest level that he will have demanded guarantees to strengthen the squad and to have his say on transfers. We parted with 7 players already and so have room now for some new signings. Unlike in the past the board and owners succeed in keeping everything out of the media and only communicate done deals. As a fan it’s not so nice because we live of transfer rumours but if our patience is rewarded with good signings then can’t complain. Personally I think we will look to bring in some high potentials from Chateauroux like Chouaref and Jung and a mix of experience and youth. I can’t see much interaction happening between us at the moment. I would certainly welcome a loan of 1 or 2 youngsters or a player like Sharp or McColdrick if they fancy a European experience to end their career but can’t really see it happening. Would be cool though.
