Basham departing

It's funny because a few seasons ago a mate asked me who would I be most gutted about if they left and my answer was instantly Chris Basham. I couldn't really explain it so that he could understand. I told him that Basham was never the kind of player who would attract interest from other clubs where we would be at risk of losing him, and yet he was a key man without doing anything outstanding. He was just solid and reliable by doing the basics and doing them right. I said we'd never be at risk of losing Basham but United fans would be devastated if we did.

Sterling, DeBryne, Bernado Silva and Mahrez....just blown away!

This. Fucking this. He's skinned north of £200m of talent there. If he'd weighted the last pass a little better, and we'd scored, it would have been one of the finest goals this club has ever seen. Looked like Bambi on ice at times, but he left them all trailing. What a player. Genuinely my favourite Blade of all time. Really, REALLY hope he gets a proper send off on Sunday, he deserves it. Best free transfer signing ever? Certainly in my lifetime.

Irrespective of his importance to the Blades during his time with us , Chris Basham has been the type of player whose ability and whole approach to the game together with the way he has conducted himself , deserve nothing less than total respect and admiration .

Such attributes are ones which are admired by the vast majority of fans throughout the country and I for one , am grateful that we have been the ones fortunate enough to have had his services for so long .

Whatever the future holds for him , I think he can approach it in the certain knowledge that he will always be revered by supporters of SUFC as one of our all time heroes .

The key man in the best team I’ve seen in my lifetime watching United (since 88/89). O’Connell actually gets my vote as the ‘best’ (ie most talented) player in that team but Bash was the beating heart.

So much to love about this guy. Hope we see him back in some capacity in the future because he’s a genuine blades legend.

Would love a charity testimonial led by bash where we get that team back together. I imagine we’d sell 30k tickets no problem.

Definitely one of my favourite players of all time. Truly epitomised our rise under Wilder, where year on year, you thought we’d have to upgrade as the team got better, only for him to surpass all expectations again.

Given his personality and what players have to say about him, he will be a huge loss in the dressing room and the club.

The obvious memory of him is the winner vs Leeds which is what he'll be remembered for, but there were so many Bash moments which I loved.

Off the top of my head:

  • The pirouette vs Southampton in the League Cup
  • Dribbling past 3 Spurs players whilst he was on the floor in the FA Cup
  • The free kick vs Scunthorpe
  • Every time he was selected in midfield for a big match and being written off beforehand but coming up trumps
  • Being written off after promotion to the Championship, then the PL and being part of the 3 pistons which we've missed so much this season

But for me it was this:

Being 2nd favourite to get to the ball vs Bannan and steaming through to win the header which set the tone for the game and the attack for our first goal

That cheered me up watching it back! What struck me was the sheer effort put in by that team - can Wilder build that ethos again?

Mr Sheffield United. Pashun, commitment, desire and an understated technical ability...he sums this club up.

Fare well Bash, we'll see you again.
I've also realised, and sorry to sully this thread, that just as Bash sums up United so Barry "Bazza Boi" Bannan sums up our neighbours. Not as good as he thinks he is, best days behind him, bad attitude, small, aesthetically falling apart despite attempts to cover it up.

Glad this has happened.

It makes it feel more like the celebration of a life than the dwelling in the end.

The 2018/19 promotion team was actually iconic and I appreciate it more now they’ve pretty much all left.

Henderson, JO’C, Bash, Enda, Baldock, Fleck, KingPing, Duffy, Sharp, Didzy (obviously Egan too but he’s still here for now!)

What a fucking team that was, right set of leaders and characters all over the pitch!

Got it in one! Leaders all over the pitch! Direct opposite of what we have got this season.

You can bet your left bollock we wouldn’t be on just 16 points right now if that terrible, terrible injury never happened. Such a great bloke who loved to represent us, we were so lucky to have him. All the best Bash. ❤️
....or Egan, and with Baldock/RND available,. I think we'd have been in and around Luton/Forest.

We may be crap but we've had some cruel luck this season.

Struggling to remember the last time a player (Bash) was at the club for as long as ten consecutive years, think Billy was the next one behind him 8 consecutive years in his third spell.

Cannot remember an outpouring of love for a departing player like this for ages. Not even Billy. Testament to Bash that he is universally loved by the fanbase. I'm torn...part of me hopes, for him, that he manages to get fit and has a couple more seasons playing somewhere. Any club that signed him would be lucky to have him. Part of me hopes we offer him an off-pitch role and he develops into an excellent defensive coach. Either way, all the best to him.

If he does get another club, I’m definitely having a little trip to see him play. Make a day of it anyone??

Just skimmed it but I didn’t see anything saying he was earmarked for any specific role.

What did I miss?
