Thank you for that basic legal guide to the Bail Act. As is pointed out above you missed out for your own protection.
In practice bail is usually withheld for serious sexual offences but as I have frequently argued with some success the strength of the prosecution case is a factor the judge can properly take into account.

My post was however about the offensive nature of some of the Ched chants

I wouldn't expect bail to be withheld for even the most serious sexual offences where the Defendant has no previous and where concerns about him bumping into the complainant can be dealt with by appropriate conditions (in Ched's case by keeping him out of north Wales).

You are right that the strength of the prosecution case is something that can be relevant, but in my experience, it is usually the prosecution arguing that the case vis-a-vis the Defendant is so strong and that he will face a substantial prison sentence, if convicted, and thus be likely to abscond.

In Ched's case, given his high profile and his high income (which he would lose if he buggered off), I think it highly unlikely that you could mount a reasonable case saying that he is likely to abscond, whatever the strength of the case against him - hence I don't think we can read anything into the granting of bail as to the strength of the case. There's also the point that the police gave him bail from the police station and, as you will know, it is very rare for the mags to refuse bail if the police grant it.
