Had talksport on the radio on my drive home last night. When the teams were announced and an injured Carter-Vickers was being replaced by Trusty for a champions league game I genuinely thought I was going insane. Hearing about the 7-1 this morning made me feel slightly less insane.

I said in the takeover thread, I'm not sure how much of this is attributable to Des Taylor's work but the transfer window we had was fantastic.

Almost every single deal in & out represented great value to the club. It's just a shame we seemed to pull the rug in the final week when we desperately needed a couple more attacking options.
I was thinking about this earlier, nearly every player we let go by choice in the window just gone is having an absolute mare or are playing at a lower standard.

Bennie Traore is probably doing the best of the bunch, but still not setting the world on fire in the Swiss league. McBurnie has endeared himself to the fans of another club, but only has 2 assists in 8 games and is sat bottom of la liga, BBD and Archer struggling for Southampton, Bogel shit for Leeds, Lowe is Wednesdays worst player. Jebbison shit for Bournemouth

You have got the others, Osbourne doing okay for an average Derby, Will Osula was the balancing act of selling talent to keep the books looking healthy. Slimane again doing okay in an average Norwich side, Norwood dropping down the leagues to end his career, Fodderingham once again choosing to be a bench keeper, Larouci average in an average Watford side.

Not sure if I've missed any, but clearly we've swapped a load of players low on confidence and ability for a quality side, and we've kept the best of the lot

Sime of them should not have been here.

Not only have we signed well, it seems many that we offloaded have made at best dubious starts to their careers elsewhere having attained decent fees.

Jebbo is attracting attention for all the wrong reasons.
Bogle has been pilloried for his defensive frailties despite a reasonable contribution on Saturday.
Trusty is being lambasted at Celtic for all the shortcomings we pointed out.
No axe to grind with Grbic but he has conceded 6 in his first two games.
I like Osula and that ticked a number of boxes but even his chances have been so minimal.

Even Tom Cannon, who we failed to sign, is starting to look like a bullet dodged!

All in all there is a case for celebrating the outgoings as much as the incomings.
The only one worth keeping was Osula, but we couldn't turn down such a generous offer.
The rest I was glad to wave byebye to, and I'd add Mcburnie to that

Still Trusty wasn't the worst Celticplayer last night. The gap between the top in championsleague and the also rans is bigger than ever.

I dip in and out of Celtic/Rangers fans message boards when they get hammered in Europe which is virtually every game. I seem to get a perverse pleasure out of it. Biggest clubs in world ya know !

The players from last season will forever represent a psychological scar for all time for me. To be fair it’s not their fault they were crap.
I’ll give JLT a free pass

Half the time they play L1 equivalent teams and it makes players like Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Lundstrum, Lawrence, Tavernier look like decent players. Then they come up against a top side and get battered.

If Celtic & Rangers were to go in to the Premiership with their current squad I’m convinced neither would survive. I think we’d give Rangers a decent game.

They don't get hammered virtually every game, rangers record In the europa league is pretty good indeed. People forget that Scotland is an absolutely tiny country, they are both huge clubs, if it wasn't for the premier league boom they blind everyone other than man utd, Liverpool and arsenal in England, if they ever had the resources or the money the premier league brings in, they'd be competing at the very top ladder. There's no two bigger clubs in world football from such a small country.

If you want a high reward, low effort, low stress lifestyle there can be very few jobs better than third-string premier league goalkeeper.
Job satisfaction must be pretty low though, and I think most of the research says that's the strongest link to happiness (not income, above a certain basic level)

At this current stage yes. But give it a few years they'd be challenging to win it. Be an instant attraction for investment and already huge clubs. Won't ever happen though.

People say this all the time; I don’t buy it. I think their ceiling would be similar to clubs like West Ham, Everton and Villa - good old, big clubs, who have practically no chance of breaking through the ceiling.

They’re not in the same stratosphere as Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal or Chelsea - let alone Liverpool or Man Utd

Chelsea we're absolutely nothing until roman, spurs are still a joke despite growing hugely, absolutely nowhere near Liverpool or man u, nobody is other than real. Also arsenal streets ahead too. Putting west ham in there bracket, give over man

I think you misread my post mate.

I wouldn't rule out a January return for BBD

I read a statistic that said per population Scotland had the highest percentage of people watching football. While that may or may not be true what percentage of that population watch either Celtic or Rangers ? I’ll guess at 80% of the total. Thats the real problem with Scottish football. As for the «little country « argument I’ll give you Uruguay and Croatia.

Rangers also claim they are the most successful club in World football.

To add Rangers record in the Champions League in 2022/3 was on aggregate: 1-7, 0-6, 1-9 . I’d say that constitués hammerings.
Europa League they’ll face clubs from Cyprus, Malta etc, so I can quite imagine they don’t always get hammered.

Rangers were knocked out of the Champions League on August 13th.

Back on topic…

I watched the highlights of Celtic’s game and it gave me flashbacks. Trusty standing off. Trusty not engaging. Trusty jogging back towards goal as the opposition lace another one past his keeper. Trusty’s “disappointed” face.

Honest to goodness I’ve always said players need patience and the right environment to thrive. There’s an endless list of slow starters who settled over time. But Trusty hasn’t shown me anything at all to suggest he can play above the low end of the Championship. Not a sausage.

It’s bewildering. Celtic’s analysts see something worth £6m. But what? And when?

I really hope he proves me wrong.

Rangers 1-3 down at half time. Familiar story, although 45 minutes left. Could change.

He must have shown some potential in his time at Birmingham, but he showed us the square root of feck all in his time with us. Some players are confidence players and improve when the team is playing well, but he has so many basic failings as a defender that it doesn't even come into that. He's just a really poor player.

How anyone at Celtic thought he was worth £6m is anyone's guess, but like most fans I could hardly believe our luck when the daft sods fell for our bluff on deadline day after we turned down their initial £5m offer (I'd have snapped their hands off for the first offer tbh but we took a chance on them really being desperate) and the came back with another £1m on top.

I can imagine our negotiation team being on a zoom call with Celtic....trying to keep a straight face as we 'reluctantly' agree to sell our ex Arsenal prodigy for a 'fair' price of £6m with the extra million twisting our arm. Then we finished the call, turned off zoom, and laughed like drunken hyenas on a honeymoon at them.

To be fair must be nigh on impossible to recruit quality players with an eye on the future so the O/F have to look at second, third or fourth rate players. Explain the likes of Kieron Dowell, Trusty and Lundstrsm playing there

We've done a bloody good job offloading last season's rubbish and replacing it with the players that we have.

Wilder knows his best 11 when they're all fit which was never the case at any point last season so is always a good point to start from.

The aforementioned best 11 is miles better already than any side we managed to put out last season. If we can wangle someone on loan to play up front for us in January (BBD again?) then that could make all the difference.

You couldn't be more wrong. Absolutely huge clubs.

You couldn't be more wrong. Absolutely huge clubs.

I agree they could get bigger gates than the examples quored of Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea, but they will never get the same level of commercial income. A box at a fashionable London club is always going to sell for a multiple of one in Glasgow's east end. Simlarly sponsorships and other commercial income will always be hoovered up by the big names. Maybe there are quite a few Celtic fans in the US, but I'd suggest that in Africa, South East Asia, China and the Far East the North London clubs have massively* more 'fans' than the Old Firm.

Note my clever use of this word - obviously the S6 Massive dwarf them all.

Historically yes, but that’s it.

By any modern metric, social media following, commercial income, appetite for TV rights, they’re not not huge; barely big!

Did you know that Brighton make more commercial revenue than them? (That’s nothing to with TV money by the way; that’s stuff like sponsors and merchandise sales)

Out of interest, what makes you adamant they’re such big clubs?
