Anybody been to watch Sheffield United Women's team?

True. And once more investment goes in, the standards come up too. Many women footballers are semi-pro anyway and have other employments. They don't just turn up for training four times a week, play one game and do some PA stuff in the meantime. Many of them struggle to get sponsorship (if at all) and many have no agents as such to manage their careers. Some have to have career breaks to have kids.

All this 'backlash' is thinly veiled fear of blokes having their sandwiches stolen. It's like when women started to become match officials. All sorts of bollocks coming out about them 'not being able to do their jobs properly' and 'not being able to handle the pressure'. What a load of cack. Now we don't even notice who is blowing the whistle or raising the flag.

I can't wait for the day when one of these 'Sunday Leaguers' becomes technically gifted and recognised enough to challenge the notion of playing for a bloke's senior team. Imagine the dick waving and excuse-mongers then?

It’s improved a lot since I started watching it and, as you say, with more money in the game and the top players being able to train full time it’s going to improve further. It’s never going to match the men’s game for strength and athleticism but I’d still rather watch it than rugby, any American sport, motor racing, cycling, etc.

Because of attitudes like yours.

Is that 'In mah opinion, laike' or do you have evidence to back that up? Which Sunday League? And even if it is (as you say) what is the point you're trying to make, here?

Do you mean 'there'll', rather than 'they'll'? And again, what evidence do you have that 'interest will wane over time'? Got any figures on that, or is it 'I don't like it 'cos it's chicks doing stuff blokes do'? I mean, have you actually had any interaction with the women's game at any level, or are you just some internet, chauvinistic blowhard trying to diss an underfunded, underinvested sport, and one that's 'a bloke's domain'? Who says?

What's your opinion on pitching Joanna Konta versus Andy Murray? Thinks she'd match up? What about Anthony Joshua versus Nicola Adams or Jayne Couch? They're fucking shit, aren't they, eh? Sunday League*. I mean, interest will soon fade out …

*I challenge you to take Nicola Adams on in one thee minute round. You'd think you were surrounded by ten of her.

I have played football with a professional women's footballer. Yes she was very good, but no she wasn't as good as some of the lads that I have played with who've played in the Meadowhall District Sunday Premier.

I'm sorry I don't see why you're comparing other sports.

Each to their own. If you like it and continue to like it, then I don't begrudge you your pleasure. I don't enjoy it as I think the quality is poor although that's not to say it won't improve it would still surprise me if in 10 years time it still got the coverage it has now.

Throughout my life I've known far more ladies play and enjoy other sports such as Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Squash and Equestrian none of which get remotely the amount of coverage that Women's Rugby, Football and Cricket have suddenly started getting over the last 5 years. Why is this, personally I think the reasons are far more chauvinistic than me saying the quality of women's football is poor... It's because unless they are running around in sports popular to men, then no one cares.

I haven't time to watch it unfortunately. But if I had, I would.

And anything that encourages more people to play and/or enjoy football must be a good thing?

I never expected to enjoy the women Rugby 7's at the Olympics, but it was great. That's because I was prejudiced and believed it couldn't be as good. Happy to say, I was wrong.

As said above, it is the same game called football played in a slightly different way (and the difference is diminishing).

I'm delighted that the Blades have this team. Good Luck To The Lasses.

What about 'as a team'? I'd say the England Lionesses would quite happily take on your Meadowhall Spartans and very possibly beat them by some margin. Don't forget, although meagre, the investment in professional coaching, fitness and tactics is far and above 'turning up for training on a school astro for two hours on a Tuesday neet'. Even at the women's level, the payers are coached and trained to play for ninety and stay sharp and focussed through the game. I don't doubt there are talented lads in that league. But I would wager they'd have a job keeping up with the pace and passing of those who have had it coached properly into them.

I think the main point with women's football at the moment is that the standard is improving at a rapid rate. Whilst it may be impossible for the vast majority to compete athletically with the men, it doesn't mean they can't be as skilful. Take tennis. I'd much rather watch it than the men. That's because it's much more of a spectator sport.

Women's football has the current benefit of being exceptionally sporting in comparison to the men's game and not attracting the kind of fans who would smash up IKEA.

On two separate occasions I have played for a very good men’s team in a friendly against Donny Belles. We won 3-0 on both occasions as ultimately we were a little bit stronger than them but they played some very good football and we’re technically excellent. They were also very quick and had no issues at all with putting their foot in.

Agreed. I love this 'the goalies are shit', 'it's too slow', 'it's a fad' bullshit. Anyone who compares men's and women's games alongside themselves like-for-like either don't understand football, don't understand human physiology in sport or are misogynistic twats.

I'd also like to see some of these heroic examples of male pride go ninety minutes in midfield with some women footballers (yeah, go ahead with the shit puns, etc) and not end up breathing out of their arses as they get outpassed or skinned inside-out. Anyone fancy playing up front against Steph Houghton? Fancy facing Jordan Nobbs or Karen Carney or Toni Duggan and trying to take the ball off them?

Women's football is here to stay. Dry your eyes, get used to it
Wow i,m a mysogynistic twat whos stuck in the 70s . Or is it just my opinion ? The PC brigade dont like opinions that differ from theres do they ?
Just realised i hate sprouts too, must be a vegetarian hating twat as well

Yeah. You're a bloke who fears women might just be able to do the same role as you (possibly even better eh?) and feel a leetle beet uneasy at the hellish notion. It has zero to do with 'PC Brigade', just an appreciation of life in the second decade of the new millennium where women - crisis! shock! horror! - have managed to elbow a bit of room in this largely bloke's world. Shit - they even play football … some even to a decent standard. What next?

ps: Maybe some bird on here can show you how to use the quotes stuff. It's a chicks job, innit, luv?

I’m just surprised that the navy has a PC Brigade. What a bunch of snowflakes, eh.

I read a few years ago that Hamburg under 16's or something took on one of the top women's international sides. The lads won 3-0.

I'm average as fuck at football, but I'm pretty confident that if I was a woman, with all my current attributes, both physical and mental, I'd be playing for one of the top women's teams.

Serena Williams lost convincingly to a bloke with a non descript rank, and she later admitted that if she was male, she'd be ranked outside the top 100.

The point is, never compare women to men. We have far too much of an advantage. But also, don't expect even a small percentage of football fans to want to watch stuff that just isn't anywhere near as good.

I like how everyone tries to be supportive, but let's not lie.

About 3-4 years ago SUFC provided opposition to the England women's team before an international tournament. IIRC, the original plan was for them to play an U21 academy team, but due to other commitments they ended playing a U18 team.

SUFC U18s played two different (and unfamilar) systems in the two halves to replicate how England's opponents would play. I think the result was something like a 3-0 win for our lads.

Women's football may have come on further since then but this gives you a measure of how good it was a couple of years back.

It was a 'behind closed doors' thing and never publicised, presumably to avoid any embarassement to the women, but I knew someone who worked in our academy at that time.

Whoever is doing the negotiating for the Women's Team need to do it for the Men's Team as well! Announcing ANOTHER Signing today!

Anybody who has daughters or nieces or even younger sisters: Don't be put off by the misogynistic shite eminating from the pondlife attaching themselves to the club.

Sheffield United is an entire entity, male, female or child. Let's hope all succeed under our banner.
My eldest grand daughter 7 years old is football mad and has been kicking a ball around since the age of 3.
Shes got into an organised training group down on Lowfields for youngsters brilliant to watch.
This season her dad has got her training with Sheffield Ladies youngest group.
Participation in any sport has got to be good has'nt it?

Opinions that differ from theres indeed.

Watching this World Cup, the histrionic free women's game has more and more appeal. It's ironic that the word hysterical has it's origins in the greek for the female sex organs, given how apt it is for Neymar et al.

I can clear that up for you SEB. Neymar is a twat, being hysterical is therefore part of the territory.

Took the 8 year old up February.
It was frigging freezing.
We enjoyed it.
When's the new season start?
Are they still going to be playing at shirecliff??

Just wondered if you take your loyalty to your club so far that you even go watch our BladeBirds play?

I never have, I must admit.

It's not that I don't wish them all the best - it's not that I don't think women can play football either. I just think I'd get embarrassed when the crowd starts singing...

"Oh Sheffield,
is wonderful,
Oh Sheffield is wonderful,
it's full of cock, bollocks and United,
Oh Sheffield is wonderful"

Or

"Shoreham girls,
we are here,
Shag your men
and drink your Prosecco"

No

Never been myself living in Leeds. I guess to me the women’s game will never be a popular as the men’s... but there is clearly a growing interest in it.

Just common sense to be progressive and at the forefront of this wave - after all 50% of the population are women. why wouldn’t we want to tap into this ?

If you look at where the women’s game has come from 10-15 years ago it wouldn’t Surprise me to see sustainable decent crowds (10k say) in a few years time. We should be applauding the club for their efforts in this area imo. Inclusion can only be a good thing and will only lead to more blades fans overall.

And tbf - No one is asking you to enjoy it more than the men’s game just enjoy it on its own merits.

But the truth is the standard of the women’s game is variable. The skill level is surprisingly high, little descent or bad tackles, physicality is obviously school boy level, goalkeeping is poor with occasional laughably poor defending. I’d say top level women’s s football wouldn’t stand a chance against non league clubs but the general level of skilful play is higher. There was the report that the England women’s national team played a England boys under 17 team and were thrashed, think it was 6-1.

That’s not being disrespectful, that being honest but there’s no clamour to support the boys teams.

It’s a form of positive discrimination towards the women’s game.
When I was younger I used to think all discrimination, even positive discrimination was bad.
But now I see that some areas of society aren’t equal and a bit of positive discrimination is beneficial.
I say more the merrier in the Blades family and wish the SU women’s team well.

This must be the longest a S24SU thread has gone without a photo of a pair of massive knockers.

Is everyone treading carefully, or what?

"Preston was the stronghold of women’s football in its early days, the famous Dick Kerr’s Ladies being formed there in 1894 and earning a lot of money for charity.

Their match with St Helen’s Ladies on Boxing Day 1920 had 53,000 inside Goodison Park and thousands locked outside." (http://www.thefa.com/womens-girls-football/history)

Yeah you're right. It won't be around for long.

So what you're saying is that it originated with a guy being able to say "I'm the main dick in the ladies' game?"

There's a joke in there, somewhere...

No, doesn't appeal to me in all honesty.

I'm all for women being able to participate in whatever activities / jobs / sport they wish, but as a spectator sport, it just doesn't cut the mustard to pull enough attention.

Btw Pommpey, you come across as a bit of a FemiNazi. It has nothing to do with " Men being scared of woman doing a man's job better", all about the quality of what's on show, that's what drives us all to part with our cash to watch.
