Rodwell then. Ben Woodburn, who I forgot previously. James 'I want to be first choice at Manchester United Wilson. Ricky Holmes. Plenty of unambiguous failures there, to go along with the successes of Fleck, O'Connell, Baldock, Stevens, McGoldrick, Egan etc.

Our recruitment has been fine, nothing more. It is not the main reason for our recent success. However an upturn is required if we want to build on that success, or even preserve it.

Rodwell came on at Burnley when we were losing. He slotted into 2 positions and we ended up drawing. That extra point earned £2m in prize money. His short-term contract is not worth crying over.
Holmes had to retire with an injury. Woodburn and Wilson lasted a few months.

Yes, because they were poor signings! Getting rid of them quickly doesn't suddenly make them good.

Of course it is, but we've signed a bunch that never, ever seemed likely to. Morrison squandered whatever (in my opinion hugely overblown) potential he had years ago. Ched Evans was as a baffling signing.

Also, let's not forget that when they were signed, Luke Freeman and Callum Robinson were both record signings. To then turn around and go 'oh well, not every player can make an impact' smacks of slightly careless recruitment.

We could sell Callum Robinson for the same amount of money that we purchased him. (I wouldn’t sell as I see potential)

Luke Freeman is IMO a fantastic option to have on the bench, I think for the money we spent, even as a squad player, it’s absolute fine.

Our transfer record was modest to say the least. We was always going to break it multiple times on our return to the top flight.

Regarding signings like Morrison and Ched. It’s so ridiculously low risk, who cares? For all we know Rodwell could be seriously impressing behind the scenes and next thing you know we have a premier league squad player that cost us £0 in transfer fees.

Is Wilder happy that he is having to spend time and energy on this low gamble risks? Honestly I bet he loves it when one of them pays off (Leon £300k!)

I do think we are trying hard to find U23's. We made £10m+ on Brooks don't forget. But without a Cat1 academy it's always going to be a struggle because we don't have first team minutes to give away (like Barnsley do).

All our funds need to go on the here and now. We are on the clock with Wilder and our future is intrinsically tied to his. We need to maximise our current situation - to do that we need players who can really push the first XI.

I Suspect our RCB search has hit a brick wall, Worrall at forest wants first team football which he wont get over our player of the year, Cabango has all gone quiet (although im not sure if we were ever in for him)

Worrall is no RCB, proper donkey that gasses out after running over the halfway line.

Some very good points Kanye. For very differing reasons, it could perhaps be argued that Brentford, Peterborough, Liverpool, Chelsea, Southampton and Man City all have better recruitment models in place than Utd. CW has obviously worked wonders in getting a team from mid L1 to top 10 Prem in 4 season - a feat unlikely to be repeated for a long time (if ever!), especially without a big budget as a key enabler. A number of players recruited at L1 level have been good enough to survive and even excel at Prem level, which is indeed testament to Utd's recruitment. However, the biggest weakness in Utd's recruitment, accentuated by the club's rise through the leagues, is at academy/ U23 age whereby the top talent understandably choose Cat 1 Academies in the area. The result is no prospects being generated that are anywhere near 1st team level. It sounds as though this issue is being addressed though. Personally, I think this will be crucial if the club is to once again create a production line of talent. I'd also like the club to start speculating on lower league and foreign based players with a view to loaning them out and then, hopefully, reaping the rewards of their development.
Brentford, Peterborough & Southampton indeed
Chelsea ?
The best thing about wilder i spose is if one of his signings turns out not to be what he expected he wont just blindly go along with playing them every week! He tried to fill Duffys boots more than once but we ended up putting him back in after a few games when they wernt up to his standard!

And then Duffy tried to fill his boots & learned he wasn't (any longer) up to our standard 😳

A fair challenge on Chelsea Mackem - I was thinking more of their youth, academy and U23 recruitment than first team specifically where they've obviously spent huge amounts with varied levels of success. Their youth teams are always very strong and they've also recruited some of the very best young talent across Europe, inc KDB, Salah etc.

Seems to be dragging on this to say Fulham had offered him £50k p/w. Maybe a twist in the tail?

was it not reported he was having a medical at Fulham yesterday?

But we should have been in ready to pull the trigger on him. It was widely known he had a release clause. We were the first in and obviously messed around with the contract so that others came in.

The recruitment recently had very much worried me. Signings like Rodwell / Ravel /C Robinson / Freeman all don’t play.
How do you work that one out?
Do you think it’s that simple?

Clearly someone, probably his agent, leaked the news to the press that a bid had been accepted. If other teams are willing to offer 50k a week wages what do you want us to do?

We are not Fulham... we are a team where the sum is greater than its parts .... lose that and we are finished... bring in a reserve left back in close to double wages everyone else is on and it’s going to start the rot ... let him go to Fulham where he will soon realise he made the wrong choice

As per the topic of this and many other threads in the rumour mill. I ask what is our Wage structure and "average" wage? Im pretty sure all the numbers spread around by the media are considerably out of date. And didn't Cadette last summer explain how we were paying ridiculous wages for Henderson (50k a week). I agree with all the posts in this thread that we should stay in the bounds of a wage structure and especially not break it for a back up LWB. But I think many peoples estimations of our players wages are very low as I find it hard to believe we could attract players like Berge, Mousset and McBurnie who I assume were on very healthy wages at their previous clubs. Up the reasonably rich Blades ⚔

20 grand a week will comfortably pay for all of those things though.

Even with the McBurnie drink driving scenario and what that has shown us. Following survival and with additional bonuses in his contract I can see that rising higher and higher the wealthier we get. :p👍

McBurnie likes his phone's,Moose likes his cars, and Berge likes private beaches.

Some of these players getting called out as 'bad signings' were just our second string, we were lucky we didn't get injuries (prior to the restart) we never needed to use them but they were there if needed. We all remember the play offs where we didn't have a fit striker, not one who you expected to score anyway. Wilder builds his squad with a lot of 'extra' players 'just in case'; two seasons ago Madine, Hogan, Washington, not one a patch on Sharp but they were used and kept him out of the team to get them up to speed if we needed them, as it was the team was so good we still got promoted with a hobbled forward line.

TL DR; we buy a lot of players who we won't use if we don't get injuries or loss of form and we did ok last season.

Fuck him then if chooses Fulham over United. Seems like he and his agent have chosen the money on offer now, rather than backing himself to become a much better player under CWAK and our coaches. The money would surely have come in bigger amounts at that point. Not the lad we want if that is his attitude (though tbf £45k a week is madness and I can also see why he has taken that contract). Indifferent to the lad now, his loss.
