Has he gone to Fulham then or what?

Well if Chris Wilder is ambitious as he says he is then he has a few decisions to make because the premier league is a whole different ball game to the championship and if we want to keep building and progressing then there has to be a change somewhere.

Because we are not going to attract better quality paying peanuts in wages.
Broken record this. Pack it in.
Where's munneh tree? Are you paying his wages? Thought not! 😜

Looking very likely, maybe we weren't even second choice either; Everton came in also according to rumours. As good as he is, I don't want to see us go down the Fulham and Villa route and have players come to us largely because our wage structure is beyond our means and that wages are just too good to turn down. I know that players will come to us also because maybe we've offered more money than another team, but I reckon its because players generally join us because of footballing reasons as our wages are not high by PL standards. I think that's one of the reasons we've done so well with recruitment is because we attract the right type of character. Those that will run through a brick wall for the manager and for their team mates - that's all down to Wilder and what he creates. I don't think Fulham have that.

Maybe there's more to it, but on paper I can't see why a player based in the north would join them over us other than money and also the London factor. Again they're not footballing reasons, and after the season we've just had I can't fathom why he wouldn't have snapped our hands off. I notice that he said he was desperate to play football next season - fair play. Maybe one football reason was that we couldn't offer him that guarantee and maybe Fulham were more reassuring in this regard, even though in paper it seems unlikely that he'd play in front of Byran.

An alternative could be Ryan Manning from QPR but he's on West Ham's radar and would probably cost a fair bit in the transfer fee. He's Irish though and maybe our Irish contingent could help sway it, although can't see Enda being on the blower to him! ;-)

Theres a direct correlation between money spent and success
Again im not saying every team who spends money will have sucess
Initially that wasn't made clear. I appreciate a generalisation but there are too many average/below average managers even in the EPL for that to work. Give me a good manager over one who spunks money every time. Or even over a lucky one (fuck you Napoleon), luck tends to be intermittent, see Watford battering Liverpool.

Well if we want to build on what we achieved last season we will have to spend on quality and pay the wages required the money is there we just need to invest and i am sure CW will do just that.

The majority of teams have players on 20k a week in the championship you even have some on much larger wages than that.

I mean i saw a post saying Sam Winnall was given a 28k a week contract at the pigs that says it all a bang average player like that on top money for the league.

Who do you support? Just be honest, no need to fib. Your questions are quite loaded and hardly convincing......if you're a Blade!

By questioning the club's, and Wilder's, ambition you seem to have bypassed the last four years and where we've found ourselves.....now if you're suggesting we should start spending even if it breaks the bank, then I'd suggest you haven't listened to a single word that has supported our rise.

Do you have any actual evidence or figures regarding Championship teams' wages, or are you seriously just basing this on 'I saw a post saying...'?

The Mail (apologies) quoted a leaked EFL survey in April this year where 18 championship teams took part. The average wage stated in that for a player was 29k/week

I saw that at the time LB - some startling figures. However, the £29k/week figure is not the average salary of all players but the average of the highest earner at each club. The salaries of players such as Rooney and Mitrovic will have pushed the figure up quite significantly (if their clubs took part in the survey). The average salary across all champ players will be much much lower.

There's a quote from the great Harvey Keitel as Winston Wolfe that I think applies here. It's "Let's not start sucking each others' dicks quite yet".

Once bitten, twice shy and all that but it amazes me that after all that's happened in the last week or so, on other threads usually sensible posters are talking about Ramsdale like we've already paid out and it's a done deal.

Our recruitment team couldn’t get it over the line quick enough. Just another error.

Apologies, completely correct. Missed the fine print in that table – it felt wrong as I typed it as I’m sure I’ve seen other figures for the estimated average that are way lower.

Apology accepted
Not sure which is the biggest transgression:-
Daily Mail in misrepresentation 'scandal' or you quoting such an august publication (without (at least) checking the 'fine print') !?!?!

Possibly so, but everyone was going on about what a great coup they'd pulled off before personal terms had been agreed, never mind the deal being completed.

But we should have been in ready to pull the trigger on him. It was widely known he had a release clause. We were the first in and obviously messed around with the contract so that others came in.

The recruitment recently had very much worried me. Signings like Rodwell / Ravel /C Robinson / Freeman all don’t play.

In what way did we 'obviously ' mess around ?
Or was it just the player waiting to see who would offer him the most money ?

I’m not, it’s not his decision re wages it’s the board / Bettis as I understand it.
Really worried we are going to be demolished this TW by 19 clubs prepared to accept the market we are in while wilder goes for PL quality and the club pay L1/Championship wages, it’s what they are used to.
Got a really bad feeling about the squad improving and next seasons squad.

What are your overly negative thoughts based on?

Again I don't necessarily disagree. I think that recruitment is the weakest part of this otherwise excellent operation. Along with some undeniable successes, we've signed a lot of odd ducks, mediocrities and out and out failures. Off the top of my head, there's Chris Hussey, James Wilson, James Wilson jr, Lee Evans, Ched Evans, Ryan fucking Leonard, Ricky Holmes, Kean Bryan, Ravel Morrison, Jack Rodwell, Callum Robinson, Luke Freeman, Richario Zivkovic and Retsos Panos Retsos who have contributed little to nothing.

What I don't understand is so many seasoned Transfer Window veterans taking the word of Twitter that we've had a bid accepted as proof positive that the player is now ours, and the premature back-slapping that ensues.

CR and LF harsh to be in their, Retsos too maybe, morrison was always a gamble and it didnt pay off, the others yes i agree not good

Yeah I don't mean to suggest that they've all been dismal failures. But some of them were odd signings, or never did much here for whatever reason.

Haha - the only reason I knew was because I interpreted it exactly as you did when I initially read the article and thought it can't be right.

£56k to be a kitman doesn't sound like a bad gig, especially as you'll get a ticket to all games. I'd better ask the Mrs to give me a crash course in how to operate the washing machine before I apply for any such roles though :)

It's a tricky one as Robinson isn't a necessity right now, but Enda isn't getting any younger so we do need to think more long term. If we were approaching our 3rd year in the Prem, then this sort of signing would probably make sense but right now we have to prioritise the goalkeeper and attacking midfield positions.

He's not even forced to get into the Fulham team as they have Joe Bryan, a very good left back and at 26 is coming into his prime. So if they want to pay 50k a week for a bench warmer then so be it.
As you say, Joe Bryan is their first choice left back.
He's only 26 yrs old, And is presumably coming up to his prime.
Surely he's not on anywhere near 50k a week, so where does he go from here.
I can see only trouble ahead for Fulham as loads of their first team squad will be wanting a pay increase.

Annoyingly I’m sure I’ve seen it before and was more sceptical back then.

Another source I’ve just read suggests the average Championship wage is closer to 11k per week, which sounds altogether more likely.
