Andre Brooks

Personally I learned a lot tonight. It's not about judging on this one performance, more about seeing trends.

I thought Brooks was poor tonight, he isn't always, but he needs to have more than the odd cameo performance to become a starter.

Gilchrist did what he always does, slows everything down to a stop. Completely takes the pace out of the attack.

Brewster couldn't score in a brothel. Tried hard but shits himself if he gets a sight of goal.

Burrows is excellent for 10 minutes a game, and invisible for 80 minutes.

RND persists in overplaying it, and did so several times tonight.

I've enjoyed McCallums cameos too, but he was woeful.

I have high hopes for One, but he should have done better tonight.

Positives, Davies did ok, Baptiste could be a good player, Blacker got better as the game wore on, and there's something about Marsh. He could be another excellent player.

So the weaknesses that some of the first teamers show were very evident against Cardiff reserves, which is worrying. Some positives though, but all around potential.
Very good that, agree with nearly all of it. Glad I’m not the only one that thinks Gilchrist is crap.

I’ve read some bullshit on here this morning. The speed with which some people are prepared to go in on young players learning their trade is ridiculous. I can only assume that these individuals had achieved perfection in all aspects of their working lives when they were barely out of their teens. There are some right wankers on this thread.

I think we need to put to bed the argument that Gilchrist is a centre back and is therefore not playing in his favoured position.

No matter what his favoured position - he should still be capable of passing the ball accurately to his team mate and not the opposition.

The aim last night was to rest the first team squad and try and compete with what was always going to be a stronger side than the one we could field. That has been echoed all week prior to kick off.

Marsh is a good player and if he can develop a bit and continue to improve gradually he will be a good player. A number of players struggled to keep up but it's not necessarily worrying as the squad wasn't littered with first team championship players.

RND didn't do himself any favours but he's had about 5 starts in 18months so deserves perseverance considering we questionably gave him a new contract. The young lads did okay to say there was a few debuts.

McCallum, Brewster, Gilchrist and Burrows showing why they are closer to the first team than the others.

Baptiste, Blacker, One etc still have a long way to go before becoming dependable at a decent level. If you look at the bench if we wanted to win last night we could have made subs that gave us more of a chance of turning the tie around. I am not saying we would have turned it round but trust in the coaching staff and their priorities. Not making those subs showed our intentions.

All in all we came out with no injuries, played the game and the first team got a needed rest - no disaster. The experience the academy lads have gained is valuable regardless of the result.

League is the priority and this squad is threadbare.

That’s my boy

Unless we play both in the same eleven JRS’s presence (when fit) is only going to hinder Brooks’s development.

I'm not being hypocritical here (kneejerking from last night), as I've been referencing Gilchrist as a weak link in our side for some time..

I just don't understand the hype around him. He's far too limited as a footballer to make a top-level full back. He isn't comfortable in forward areas and therefore offers no width to our right side.
On the occasions he does venture forward, he's pretty ineffective.

Defensively, his positional awareness is all over the place. He defends too narrow and allows opposition winger's too much room. A lot of the better LWs just take him on down the outside.

As a CB, he's surely not got the physical attributes to make it at PL level?
Possibly the Championship, but he'd need to be much more confident on the ball to make up for his lack of size.

He seems a great kid and a handy squad player, but I don't want us to be over-reliant for these last 20 games.
If there's better available, and we have the funds, then I'd like to see us go into the market.

For balance, Burrows has had bad games too (Watford, Leeds) but he offers a lot more positivity in forward areas.
He's also our player so it's worth the continued perseverance.

Not even on the bench last night. Is he injured? I know he blows hot and cold (in fairness to him, what's the longest run in the side he's had this season?), but leaving him out of a 20 man squad seems daft. Did we really need Moore, Cannon and Brewster all on the bench when we play 1 up front? One of them should have made way for Brooks imo.

Unless my eyes deceived me, him and One took part in the warm up.

Did he sleep with Wilders missus or sommet..

Once Campbell went off for Moore, we could have done with some fresh legs and pace to keep them pushed back when looking for an equalizer, especially with BBD looking gassed.

We suddenly became a very slow team up top but instead Wilder brought on extra defenders to encourage Bristol City to push forward and come at us.

Agree on Brooks as there’s a decent argument for bringing him on for a flagging BBD but no extra defenders were brought on.

Wilder is not Farke he is far too negative Wilder has turned into an incredibly frustrating manager which is incredible that i am saying that given we are top.

But there have been several times where he has told the team to sit deep and it has cost us.

Feel for Brooks i just dont get why Wilder isn't playing him.

I don't know why he's never used from the bench as wide midfielder in a 3, whether we have 4 at the back or 5

He can get about the pitch and tackle

That is useful later on in games, because we never, ever have the fucking ball

He needs to play the last two games. Him and JRS are the two wide players who are unpredictable and can cause problems. One needs to be on the pitch at all times.

I think BBD has been woeful in this spell. Sure, he gets a few goals and assists but does sod all else. Does almost no defensive work on top of largely being uninvolved with general play.

Three goals and two assists in less than 10 games worth of minutes. I feel he consistently looks like one of our most dangerous attacking players when he comes on and I'd love to see him playing on the left more often.
Yep, but his face doesn’t fit for some unbeknown reason. Better we play out of form players, in their wrong positions, instead.

Could we have done any worse if we had played him all season and not wasted a lot of money and a loan on JRS?
Maybe, maybe not. JRS has been good in patches, like a lot of wingers are, but I was expecting a bit more from all the hype.

Brooks was unfortunate to lose his place straight away, as IIRC he had a good game at Norwich the week before, getting an assist.

That said, Brooks has always played out on the left prior to this season and we’ve had Hamer pushed out there all season. We’ve then brought in another left sided player (BBD) and stuck him on the right.

Basically, I think Brooks has been unfortunate.

He has been unfortunate and JRS a disappointment after all the hype. Hindsight is an amazing thing but I just think Brooks would have overall contributed more than JRS over the season and we would have been developing our own player. Even if at the end of it we might conclude that he isn’t good enough for a top Championship/Premier League team it would be more valuable to us than Crystal Palace now knowing that their player is certainly not good enough for the same level.

Compare/contrast with Cannon and other names I could mention.

Maybe he doesn't laugh at the right jokes or play golf...
