I’ve been pretty disappointed with him after the first 5 games. He looked like he lost all his confidence and drive once JRS had a good run and got ahead of him in the pecking order.

Maybe he threw his toys out the pram a little and that’s what Wilder was reacting to with his comments re training and unwillingness to bring him on. I wouldn’t blame a young lad for that, as long as he learns his lesson. If so, looks like Wilder has pulled off another good piece of man management because he’s looked well up for it in the last couple.

Tactically, it’s a funny one with brooks. I personally don’t see him as an out and out winger / attacking wide player. He has got quick feet and the ability to go round a player but for me he’s too one footed and isn’t as quick off the mark as someone like JRS. He also doesn’t seem to have that mentality of just enjoying skinning players - he overthinks and delays at times.

On the flip side, I think he’s got a really smart football brain - way better than JRS. He’s alert, positional astute in defence and seems to know what his options are going forward with his head up. He’s tidy in possession and pings a nice pass (something all our academy grads seem to have). Plus he’s turning into a bit of a beast physically. I’m surprised we haven’t played him in midfield this year. I think he would do well in the 2 if 4231 (Blasters role basically) or even better on the left of the first 3 in a 433.

Doesn’t look like Wilder fancies that through so I just hope he keeps his confidence and drive up in that wide right position. Great finishes for his recent goals and our right backs look much happier with him there than JRS. Longer term, Brooks and Seriki on the right looks like a very tasty combo, especially against the weaker teams.
Great perspective of Brooks.

Really pleased for him yesterday, we need to remember he’s still learning his trade, he does frustrate at times because of this, seems to want to do too much like he’s going past U23s players and you don’t get away with it at this level. Thought he could have defended better for their easy goal. Sure this will be pointed out. If he keeps open to learning and the work rate is maintained we’ve got another great homegrown player

Agree with your point about him and there goal. They were playing wingbacks and he needed to stay wider. but as you say he is young he needed telling that. In second half when he was on the side of the dugouts he was much better - I suspect he was getting instructions from Wilder et al

Really good post.
Notable how many times Brooks was back defending in good areas, supporting Gilchrist.

He definitely has a lot more discipline to his game and he's starting to bring attacking output.
I was critical during his off-spell, but he's turned it around. Fair play.

Let not rewrite history. Brooks didn’t lose his place to JRS after fading. He lost it on the 4th game of the season, as soon as JRS came in. The previous three games he’d be one of our best players and got an assist at Preston (sort of one at Norwich too, though it deflected of their player so not exactly).

His form only dipped once he was coming off the bench.

Given his early form, I reckon he (maybe rightly), sulked at being taken straight out of the team despite playing well, for a loanee.
No rewrite of history, his form did dip after a good start. You're right, it dipped when he was dropped for JRS but he wasn't performing when given the chance off the bench and JRS was. Hence my comment about rightly losing the shirt.

As I said, it's a good developmental lesson for the lad and he looks to have come through it well and is doing the business again.

Shirts now his to lose again. If he is dropped or rested. Hopefully now realises what's needed to get back in and that sulking (if that is what he did), isn't beneficial (even if he was right).

I think Brooks is a great talent and these last two games he has looked a lot better than before

I think he is a much better player when he has space to attack into instead of trying to break down a low block at home

Can be very frustrating he takes the ball down from a goal kick form 50 yards away but then can’t take a simple touch in space the goal against WBA was lucky as his touch was awful

JRS is better but brooks isn’t far behind I think Brooks could learn a lot

The left footed winger cutting in is one the best players you can have

If I was wilder I’d tell him to sit in a dark room and watch videos of Arjen robben on repeat

Brooks game is completely stunted in our team more often than not he shouldn't have to be running back all the time leaving us nothing up top.

It is so frustrating because more often than not we don't play to his strengths

He looked like he wasn't warmed up properly as everything he did was in slow motion as if he had tight muscles, but then after one of his bami on ice moments, he sprinted back to defend at full pelt, so he was clearly fine and just being deliberately slow and lazy.

He needs good players around him then he can be effective.

You can’t punish first team players or those pushing for first team if they’re asked to play in a game of 11 players thrown together out of whatever’s left.

If you’re Gilchrist, Burrows, Brewster or Brooks today you’re on a hiding to nothing.

God knows why Wilder insists on playing him on the right all a defender has to do is show him the outside and he is fucked, so weak with his right leg. Either get him kicking a ball against a wall with his right foot only for a week or play him on the left where he might just get a cross in. Piss poor tonight as were a lot of them

Brooks playing against reserve Cardiff players. A player we have high expectations for.
And that was his performance.

Sorry to burst a few bubbles, but I’m not seeing a good player in him. Maybe the odd flash of good stuff, but infrequent and surrounded by a mix of mediocre and poor.
He’s not a player who gets anywhere near any other teams in recent years who’ve been promoted.

Load of bollocks that.

Totally disagree, I think his last few appearances in the league have been good, very harsh to single him out for criticism playing in that line up tonight.

Not a great game from him tonight.

Looked disinterested which is understandable. The FA Cup isn’t the competition we all remember it in years gone by.

His goal on Saturday was much more important than tonight’s game.
How is it understandable? He was bobbar at the job he's paid handsomely to do and, as an older established player, should be setting the tone. The fact is he's not as good as a lot of us either think he is or would like him to be.

Personally I learned a lot tonight. It's not about judging on this one performance, more about seeing trends.

I thought Brooks was poor tonight, he isn't always, but he needs to have more than the odd cameo performance to become a starter.

Gilchrist did what he always does, slows everything down to a stop. Completely takes the pace out of the attack.

Brewster couldn't score in a brothel. Tried hard but shits himself if he gets a sight of goal.

Burrows is excellent for 10 minutes a game, and invisible for 80 minutes.

RND persists in overplaying it, and did so several times tonight.

I've enjoyed McCallums cameos too, but he was woeful.

I have high hopes for One, but he should have done better tonight.

Positives, Davies did ok, Baptiste could be a good player, Blacker got better as the game wore on, and there's something about Marsh. He could be another excellent player.

So the weaknesses that some of the first teamers show were very evident against Cardiff reserves, which is worrying. Some positives though, but all around potential.

There's quite a lot I agree there other than I thought marsh looked like a kid who needs lower league mens football

He sprinted backwards with the ball to kill many a move off, but shouldn’t judge him on a one off match
I’m not. He had a great chance to establish himself as a key player this season together with Blaster and Peck but hasn’t risen to the challenge. Goal at Watford was good, needs a bit more than that though.

Just thought that tonight was the perfect opportunity to put Brooks out on the left, to see if he was more creative.
But possibly Wilder didn't want that question answering.
The only thing we really learnt from tonight is that NRD isn't the player he was, to be fair I think most of us already knew that.
