Scrap Euro 2020 altogether. Finish this season even if it takes until September/October. It cant just be stopped and left. Unless the EFL still deduct that lot enough points to relegate them. Then its fine.

As if UEFA are going to cancel the Euros, it would cost them millions! Postpone yes, cancel altogether? No chance.

FIFA are the big boss and if it compromises the 2022 world cup then UEFA will have to obey.

I looked it up after my last post, for Euro 2020 UEFA are targeting €2.5bn revenue with a €1bn profit. Do you really think they’ll give that up easily?

UEFA run the European game, I’m sure they’ll make sure the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A etc. sacrifice their domestic leagues before the Euros get cancelled.

They do but no way will FIFA let a world cup be affected by delayed programs. Ultimatley the world leaders will decide it all.

  • suspend football until whenever necessary
  • restart with 20/21 season but every team on the exact same points and standings as 19/20
  • no promotions or relegations
  • closed door pre-season and play offs for Euro places (winner gets final remaining CL spot)
  • scrap the fa/league cup for a season to account for the disruption
  • solidarity payments paid to lower league clubs to account for cup fixtures
  • compensation paid to clubs in league below dependant on position finished in 19/20. i.e. Norwich would pay out the most for finishing bottom, and Leeds would receive the most from this kind of package - as a parachute deal for loss of earnings due to non-promotion

You Sir are stark raving mad!

it’s the only fair way in my opinion! every club has earned their points so far, we cannot restart the season, we cannot declare null and void and we cannot give results based on predictions. So we keep the points and start a new season, i cannot see how clubs could argue against that!

Well those clubs that have, say, played Liverpool and Man City twice will have a disadvantage compared to a team that hasn't yet, and you're carrying over that unfairness into a whole new season. Not having promotion is unfair on teams who have got it right this season but may lose players/the manager/their mojo next season, similar for teams that should be relegated. You effectively take the problems and unfairness of this season and carry it over into a second season. Plenty to argue against.

If the season has to end early say now then as the table is now is how it finishes.
The bottom 3 relegated
Done.

The remaining fixtures of the current season should be played out, with full attendance opportunities for fans.
It really should not matter when the fixtures restart, but should depend on agreed risks to public health being minimized.
If it has a knock effect on international matches, then so be it.
FIFA and UEFA have proven themselves to be corrupt stupid and unreliable, so national governments can just inform them politely to wind their greedy necks in.
The game should be more fan oriented, and this is the perfect time to exercise that option.
Play out the remainder of this season when the virus is no longer an issue.
Reintroduce international competitions at club and country level only when it is safe to do so.

Players can take a staycation just like many folk did before cross border travel* was invented.
I really enjoyed caravan holidays in Brid, Filey and Skeggy. Indeed I am reliably informed by the key participants that I was conceived on a beach in Humberstone. 🙈😊

*Cross border travel in those days meant a trip to Rhyl instead of Cleethorpes. 😆

That’s a totally illogical suggestion isn’t it? What’s the rationale for doing that?

Don’t wish to be too tough on you as a new member, but that’s probably one of the most stupid suggestions I’ve ever seen on here!
No

The rationale would be, to find a solution to a very difficult situation. IF all options to play the remaining fixtures are first explored and found to be unachievable.

Really, one of the most stupid suggestions that you've ever seen on here? Pillock!

If it’s not possible to complete the season’s games then a league table has to be produced based on total points divided by total games played so far. And that is taken as final. It’s not perfect but it would bring closure, based on what’s actually happened so far and not introducing speculation about what might happen.
So in your view, awarding points based on results against all teams is a valid solution but actually basing the points awarded on previous performance against the same team is stupid! Ok, makes perfect sense!

My preference would be to play this season out one way or another. If it takes until Christmas, so be it.

Let future seasons take the brunt of amendments to rules. At least everyone will be aware of the rules in advance.

Couple of options for me.

1) 20/21 becomes a half season. Split the league in half. Top half play each other home and away, as do the bottom half. 18 game season in the PL. 22 in the EFL. Run this in whatever time remains.

2) move to a "summer" league, 20/21 becomes the 2021 season.

Both of the above allow Euro20 to be played Jan 21-ish. The second actually probably helps planning for the WC22

Totally agree
There’s nothing magic about starting the season in August. Begin next season after this season’s fixtures have been completed when it is safe to do so. Have a short break to sort out the new fixtures and begin 20/21 season a few month late. Catch up by having more midweek games and scrapping cup competitions (domestic and European) for a season.

Give everyone who's had a VAR go against them that's not been levelled up over the season as promised gets 3 points per incident and those who gained get 3 taken away

Then we win the title

It makes more sense then your suggestion, because it’s based on an average yield of points from games played with 75% of games completed. Your idea is to repeat the result of a one off game to complete the fixtures. 😃

How about taking each clubs remaining fixtures and attributing the same score as their previous meeting. Not ideal obviously, but seems fairer and at least based on previous performance between the same teams.
Not sure if this would benefit the Blades or how the table would look as I haven't worked it out.
UTB
IF ... the season has to be cut short my 'FAIR & BALANCED' option would be:
• teams with games in hand are made to play (behind closed doors if need be - 2 games).
• Champions League (11 games) & FA Cup (7 games) to be concluded similarly.
In my 'ideal' Scenario, Blades beat Villa thus qualifying for the Champions League whilst also reaching the Cup final & the game is played at a packed Wembley at a time when the virus has been contained.

Easy!!!!!!

Strongly disagree. The average points across all games is flawed for two reasons, in my opinion.
Firstly, it doesn't differentiate quality of opponent already faced and still left to face. Therefore, this would see a team with remaining fixtures, against the top 8 teams, treated the same as a team who have the bottom 8 left to play. Clearly, in this instance, the team with the bottom 8 to play would statistically be more likely to get more points.

Secondly, if you average points out, you will generate points totals that are not consistent with the points structure of the league. You could feasibly end up with a team relegated by 0.037 points.

Whilst the alternative, that I suggested, is still flawed, at least it maintains the leagues point structure and format and the points awarded for the games remaining will at least go some way to reflect the difficulty of opposition faced and be based on the last actual meeting of the clubs.

To be clear, this is not my preferred option, I think that they should restart the season when safe to do so and make adjustments to next seasons schedule to accommodate.

Its just a mind fuck , Premier league have announced there is another meeting on Thursday to try and sort out what to do !
Given that the Premier League’s ability to sort matters out is seriously in doubt (see West Ham/Tevez), I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you..... Now that Ms.Brady and the Dildo Brothers want this season to be declared null and void, one can easily see how things may turn out....

Personally I only see two viable options. The first is finish the season somehow and take the knock-on effects to next season and beyond. The only issue with this is player fitness and contracts, but that's a backlash that could occur regardless.

The second option is to make the season null and void. I really can't see many teams getting board with that. Or fans. The ones in relegation spots would cheer but otherwise any team fighting for Europe, any team fighting for a cup, or any team looking for promotion either automatic or play-off will be against it. As will fans.

Any half-way option HAS to include relegating sides (or not promoting sides) in circumstances that will lead to lawsuits over loss of revenue and such if not destroying the integrity of the game for a long time to come. I expect Villa to go down but how could you relegate them when there's only a two point gap and a game in hand for them? Then 3 teams on 27 points. How could you ever fairly decide between them?

My personal solution is: scrap the European cup in the Summer (play it next year) and possibly scrap the domestic cups next season to make space for league games.

Was going to say something similar. Alternative ways of finishing the season are all very interesting for a debate, but the only two options are completing the season with real football matches or declaring the entire season void.

You do have some good points and honourable principles too.

In an ideal world we should complete the league programme - however long that takes. If we don’t, then it devalues every league programme from hereon for evermore.

What happened when WWII broke out btw? That might give us a clue?

Saturday Sept 2nd 1939, we won 1-0 at L**ds to go 2nd top below Blackpool

Sunday Sept 3rd, Britain declares war. FL suspend season
Then that’s what will happen again imo. I can see no other plausible alternative.

We can debate the merits of this scheme or that scheme, but we had a competition based on a set of rules and a fixed number of games. If it can’t be completed then it is null and void. I don’t like that for one moment, but it’s the only “fair” solution. In so much as it is equally unfair to everyone.
