Alleged Racist Chanting - BBC Radio Sheffield

If agree, but personally think the club banning them from now till the end of the season would emphasise the message that we dont tolerate this. The club will have acted proportionately and they can acknowledge that these fans were shouted down very quickly by many Blades and we move on. It's certainly a lot more of a positive story than the field day we're giving all the local press currently.
No one gets feathered and tarred, the fans involved might feel a little hard done to but hopefully will have learnt that they have to take responsibility for their actions and the club won't make excuses for them.
As with Ched, the club just seem slow and like they are only reacting because the press make them.
I think it would be ridiculous to ban a few kids, tits though they can be at times, for a misguided moment of attempted banter, which I'm certain is all it was. if the star want the real story, a glance on here would show that the general consensus is their behaviour was unacceptable, as very quickly, did the people concerned. Its a non story whose instigator has no actual recollection of what was said with boosted by quotes from a sad, rival chairman who wasn't even there. It shouldn't even have got as far as top be treated seriously on s24su let alone the local media.

I would be interested to know why Mr Mohammed ,complained to Sheffield United ,and after only 24 hours complained to the FA and then gave his name and address to the press while filing another complaint ? It is not the way I would go about things if I felt I was insulted .And after 40 odd years of going to the Lane this is the first time he has heard a chant like this why is he suddenly insulted ,why didn't he go to the nearest steward or police office as there are plenty in the South stand.
My own view is that he has done more harm than good regarding racial harmony. This had been dealt with by the other fans on the Kop and was not heard again.
Spot on. I can only assume the guy has his own agenda.

If I was a Bradford fan I would be asking why my Chairman couldn't get out of Macdonalds to attend a vital game 40 miles away.

It's a ban till the end of the season for making an obviously racially motivated chant at a game and bringing our club into disrepute.

And how will you prove this ? If you were approached today and accused of looking like you made a racist chant how would you react ? It will be a difficult one to make stick. Im glad Im on John street.

It was a misguided chant, on the fringes of interpretation. Definitely more 'Mind Your Language' than 'EDL'. over and done with in a flash. We shouldn't even be talking about it.

I'd be asking to see he evidence and if I'm chanting town full of ISIS I'm bang to rights.

Oh FFS. So he's an attention seeking wanker, nothing more.

I heard this sang on the Kop once (you have reminded me) and a fellow Blade stood up and turned to face the singers (for obvious reasons) and the racist minority were immediately drowned out by a rendition of "And E;s a Blade and E's a Blade". Me and Mrs HB joined in.
What you describe here is precisely what happened to me when we played at Anfield in April 1994 (we won 2-1, Flo got both goals for us). Was that the game you were thinking of by any chance (assuming you were there of course)? If it was, then the Blade who stood up was me.

There were chants around me of "I'd rather be a paki than a pig". Those that were there and in that vicinity would've heard it clear as day. Being of Pakistani origin, this made me feel rather uncomfortable, to put it mildly. I then stood up to make my presence known and turned to face where most of the chants came from. There then followed some cheers and a round of "He's a Blade & He's a Blade".

Apart from that, it was a cracking day.

My memory sometimes fails me, but Mrs HB has confirmed it was definitely on the Kop :(. We were both at that match at Anfield as well and can't remember that happening, but my senses may have been somewhat dulled.

So you didnt feel the need to report it to the press and give them you name and address ? Good on you ,shows guts and defuses the situation at source.

Sadly, it's not the first time it's happened with Bradford. I remember a boxing day game at their place a few years back (around 2003/04 maybe?) we won 2-1 on a freezing cold day and there were disappointing chants of "small town in Asia" that day. I don't think it's a case of our fans being more or less racist than others. Just that there are uneducated cretins attending football matches.
1996, Dougie Hodgson goal.
2003 04, McCall scored for us.
A midday match in September.

1996, Dougie Hodgson goal.
.

A few months earlier in an interview with Gary Armstrong for Flashing Blade he said that he would go berserk after scoring his first goal for us and that the ref would probably have to send him off for having a w*nk in the middle of the pitch. He didnt have the w*nk after scoring his goal against Bradford:D

As this incident was reported by........

'Ramon Mohamed, aged 55, of Totley, who has supported The Blades for more than 40 years, said it reminded him of the ‘dark ages’

it suggests he is angry on his own behalf.

Ramon contributed a few articles to Flashing Blade some years ago.
I recall one article about our fans standing with BNP in Barnsley prior to a game, and the shame he felt.
He was a decent contributor.

I remember Highfield Blade (though I didn't know who he was until a minute ago) standing up at the Anfield Road End. I may misremember but I thought it was in response to 'I'd rather be a Paki than a Scouse' - though it doesn't really matter what the exact lyric was.....

I'll back track a bit to see what Highfield feels about the chants versus Bradford.............

p.s. I understand if you wouldn't want to pass judgement on the ISIS chant, but I would be interested and informed by your response nonetheless.

I wasn't there on the 28th, so have no idea what went on, but on a historical note, it's a bit of a myth that United fans have "always" been non-racist. Throughout the eighties (when I had a season ticket), you could guarantee that when any opposition black player got the ball there would be monkey noises coming from the Kop. Being a terribly politically aware young man, I was acutely embarrassed by this, but was not about to take on any of the many casual racists who frequented the Lane at that time. The last time I remember the monkey noises was in Sept 88 when Bristol Rovers' Devon White was the victim. That was as the Deane and Agana era was getting going and I suspect their heroics did a lot to convince people that abusing black players on account of their ethnic origin was perhaps not the best way to encourage our black star strikers.

United were nothing particular evil by the way. It happened everywhere then. We have indeed moved on.

The first time I was aware of Blades fans making monkey chants was when I was in the BLLT watching Blades play Notts County in the Anglo-Scottish Cup in August 1977 (we lost 5-4). I was wearing a hearing aid at the time and was puzzled with the noises made by some Blades fans every time Notts County's Tristan Benjamin (Ian's brother) was running for the ball. I asked my dad what were the noises, he said that they were making monkey noises because Tristan is black. It was the first time I was aware of the monkey noises. In November 1984 I was sat in the old JSS in the scoreless draw against Man City, I saw a banana being thrown at Man City's Dave Bennett from the JSS West Terraces

Last time I can recall it was Newcastle morons doing monkey noises to Deane and Agana, March 1990 @t the Lane.

Disgusting that a child has to have such experiences. Shame on these people.

Burnley away Jan 1993 the racial abuse handed out to United black players was the worst I've ever heard.

In a pub before hand some twat came in wearing a claret and blue dressing gown and a gorilla mask shouting he was Brian Deane. Big bloke he was but whined when he got a slap after the doors were locked on him.

We used to have a few black lads knock around with us late 70s early 80s sound when we stood on the John St West , Parkgate Blades started one match with that monkey chanting wasnt long before it kicked off with them.

I wasn't at the Bradford match. If I were there and if I'd heard it, personally I think I might've just had a quiet word with one of the stewards or one of the matchday SLO's and left it at that.
