A few observations from the stats:

- it was no better and we deserved to lose. We lost the xG (0.58 v 0.85) and had only one shot on target (none at all in second half).

- defensively, McGuinness had 17 successful contributions, and Tanganga 15. Plus they won 6 aerial duels each. Strong performers and a small step forward.

- Burrows was again our key attacking outlet with three times more successful crosses than anyone else, twice as many key passes as anyone else, most touches, two aerial duels, four clearances etc.

- Peck had joint most shots (3) , joint most aerial duels (6), second most key passes. Outscoring Matos with just one successful tackle, and 3 aerial duels

- aside from Burrows, our attacking creativity is just appalling. Our forward players managed one successful cross (Hamer) just two key passes (Hamer & Ogbene), just two dribbles (Hamer & O’Hare) and one shot on target (Hamer - which I could have saved).

There is so much work to do. As a team we are just totally dysfunctional. We have no clear pattern of play at all. I’m on the whiskey this time….

Interesting that Campbell did not feature at all in the Stats, perhaps as he did not feature on the pitch. The bloke is bone idle, never ever makes a run or tries to show for the ball.
Yes he can finish, well apart from the one he passed to the keeper, but otherwise the bloke is a total waste of time. Cannot unfortunately just as bad we need Ings fit ASAP as the two aforementioned are terrible

He was going to win ‘least touches and poorest contribution’ prize but then Cannon came on and smashed it.

Coolblade I like these posts because sometimes they make me realise I was harsh on a player but today:

- Of Peck’s 3 shots how many actually troubled their keeper?

- Of Burrow’s crosses, how many found a Blades player in a decent position?

- McGuinness seemed to just head the ball a lot but his marking and tackling when someone runs at him is piss poor.

- Tanganga won’t be able to play well until he has competent defenders alongside him because he tries too hard to cover mistakes, also needs to stop losing the ball in bad areas when overplaying or dribbling.

That's an interesting take.

What's he making a run on to? If we aren't playing progressive passes? What's he's showing for, if aren't making dribbles, key passes or crosses?!

I can’t answer all questions but:

- re Pecks shots, none on target. He is desperate to score but should be told to focus on his primary role.

- re Burrows and Hamer, they each attempted 6 crosses each, only one of Hamer’s reached one of our players, three of Burrows did. No other attacking player had a successful cross.

- re Campbell, he had least touches of any of our starting players (21) but did have pass completion rate of 91%, two shots and won two aerial duels. Cannon managed 5 touches. None of significance.

Thanks, I didn’t expect an answer but maybe I’m being harsh on Burrows based on the fact he allowed someone to walk past him for the goal. We need to find a position for him that doesn’t involve defending.

I thought Hamer’s game was ruined when he was booked, he dialled it in after that.

On the flip side of this..Peck had:

0 out of 3 shots on target (0%)
0 out of 3 accurate crosses (0%)
1 out of 5 accurate long balls (20%)
3 out of 8 ground duels won (38%)
12 out of 59 passes in final third (20%)

My few observations

I think we look tiny and weak as a side in the middle with. O'Hare, Peck, Matos, Hamer.
Matos looks energetic but everything is chaotic with him. Never seemed composed, always lunging for things. He spent more time on the floor than a vileda super mop.
Coopers long kicking is woeful
McGuiness went up for lots of headers but missed the ball loads of times.
When we have the ball in attacking areas we don't pass the ball quickly enough, are too static and don't have enough players getting into the box to be effective. This might be down to not knowing when we are going to get the ball in from wide areas because we recycle it back out again too often rather than trying to get a cross in earlier.
If Campbell 's poor form continues then we are in trouble because bringing Cannon on is like bringing Julian Clary on to play up front.

We looked like a side who have been beaten regularly and badly at times.

We looked like a side in transition.

We looked like a side void of confidence.

Stats are pointless at this time.

What the players need is a good piss up over a long weekend… get in to some scrapes with each other … make up… get to know each other.

Work them hard in training … set the expectations and drop anyone that doesn’t meet them.

Which is why I suggest he stops trying to be Frank Lampard, and focuses on his primary role. He keeps trying to be a player that he hasn’t got the skills for. But he still has strong attributes if he holds his position.

Last season, Peck’s lack of goals was sort of endearing. He was obviously desperate to score, and it seemed inevitable that one would go in some enough. We were all willing him to get a bit of luck and find the top corner.

However, as time has ticked on, it’s become a frustration. He often shoots when he should be passing. When he does shoot, it almost always lacks composure, or is weak. I don’t know whether he focuses on this in training. If he does, then maybe he should just accept that he isn’t a goalscorer, and stick to protecting the back four.
