A few observations from the stats:
• xG battle was a dead heat (2.16 v 2.17), but we lost despite creating similar quality chances. We had more shots (15 v 12) and more on target (5 v 4), plus 9 corners to their 4. Possession dominance was clear: 62.3% v 37.7%, yet conversion rate (6% v 25%) tells the story.
• Aerial duels on paper were strong again: 53 contested, 58.5% success. McGuinness led with 7 wins, Tanganga close behind with 6 aerial duels (and 5tackles, 1 interception, 8 clearances). Ben Mee chipped in with 5 aerial duels. The decision for Peck to man mark their most dangerous aerial threat is one hard to explain, although I am sure it wasn’t Wilder’s fault.
• Midfield screening solid but stretched : Soumaré posted 2 tackles, 2 interceptions, 2 clearances with 91.5% passing accuracy (47 passes). Peck got the lowest positive stats score with 1 tackle, 1 interception, 3 clearances and 87.5% accuracy from 72 passes but a catastrophic back pass!
• Creativity came mainly from wide areas: Ogbene delivered 5 key passes and 8 crosses (though once again none accurate), plus 1 dribble. McCallum added 3 key passes and 6 crosses, with 1 shot on target. O’Hare was our most incisive player: 3 shots, 2 on target, 2 key passes, 3 dribbles, and the goal.
• Subs impact minimal: Burrows, Ings, Matos, Davies, Oné combined for just 1 shot and 3 dribbles. Cannon wasn’t involved this time, but striker contribution remains a concern. Campbell had 2 shots, no key passes, and only 14 touches.
• Defensive organisation better than scoreline suggest: Despite conceding three, two came from clinical finishes (one from a free header, one an awful back pass) after transitions, the other a questionable penalty. Our block and clearance numbers (Tanganga 8 clearances, Mee 3, McGuinness 4) show the back line worked hard under pressure.
- Ongoing striker concerns : Conversion rate: 15 shots, only 1 goal (6%), Striker involvement: Campbell and Ings barely featured in build-up.
Losing at home so badly to a relegation rival (I’ve finally accepted that’s the battle we are in!) is a bitter blow. I’m trying to be positive, and some stats suggest it was better than I thought. But there again, there are lies, damn lies and statistics.
