A few observations from the stats (again pretty obvious!):

- we undoubtedly deserved to lose, xG of 1.48 v 0.64, with 6 shots on target against 0

-Tanganga was our MOTM by a distance, with most successful defensive contributions (11). Campbell our lowest ranked, with 1 shot but no other positive stats and only 9 touches (I appreciate this isn’t all down to him!)

- Despite most fan’s subjective analysis, Burrows had second most successful defensive contributions ( 7) second most crosses, and a pass completion rate of 92.7%.

- Our starting 11 won only 2 aerial duels all game (1 each for Peck and Burrows). Boro won 15. A major issue for us (one of many)

- in terms of creativity, Gus made most crosses and joint most key passes (not saying that much). Possibly more surprising is that the Opta stats for the season to date have Hamer as having the second highest xA in the league - showing that even within this dysfunctional mess of a team, he is still creating more than almost anyone else in the division.

- One did well with a key pass, joint most successful crosses, joint most successful dribbles (3) and 100% pass completion rate etc. A small positive.

It’s getting depressing just looking at these…..

Interesting re Hamer.

Whilst he’s hit and miss, I still love Gus, and if today’s the day he leaves, I will shed a virtual tear - as we again lose our best footballer.

Just hoping we use it as a platform for rebuilding - as we did when we sold Brooks to B’mouth.

Not surprised by the heading duels - we've lost Moore , Souza & Anel and Robbo wasn't in the squad.
Apart from Tanga , there's no strength in our headers of the ball
Campbell has never even jumped for a header.
Cannon is , well ... Cannon
One is a unit but on the wing 🤣
Bindon is a weak streak of piss

I haven’t seen actual stats but I bet most of Boro’s 15 aerial duels won were their centre halves. I thought at the time I don’t recall Boro playing many/any long balls forward to towards our defenders, but whenever we attacked the ball was like a magnet to Dael Fry’s head.

I think the above numbers shows contested aerials won, not the ones that Fry nodded away unchallenged.

Gus is a strange one and very different from N’Diaye.

N’Diaye was often massively involved, it was as though all our players were told “pass it to Illeman”. He was always lively and hardworking, always a big threat in attacking midfield.

Last season Gus had many games where he didn’t see much of the ball. He had many quiet games where you didn’t notice him much on the pitch. However he had this rarely talent of providing a killer pass from nothing or scoring a great goal from nothing.

This season Gus has been so poor, altho many of our players have suddenly lost form. As you say…..the validity of any sale all depends on how we look at the end of the window.

It's strange that Hamer put in the most key passes and most crosses and yet Campbell had the fewest touches. Poor passing and crossing or poor movement from Campbell?

Thanks Bergen, and yes an “aerial duel” is defined as “Winning a header in a direct contest with an opponent” not a free/uncontested header

As for Ndiaye compared with Hamer, if we take their last two full seasons with us in the `Championship as the fairest sample, both of which included one promotion and one near miss, then goal contributions (goals plus assists) are:

Ndiaye: 34 in 78 games (21 goals, 13 assists)

Hamer: 39 in 88 games (21 goals 18 assists)

So almost identical (and Ndiaye was generally playing further forward).
