When was the last time this happened? Off the top of my head I don't remember hitting 7th in the Bassett years.

yep, we were seventh after the 39th and 40th games before dropping 2 spots when we lost the last 2 matches.

We would have finished top six if we hadn’t lost a eerrrrrm shall we say “strange“ final day game at Wimbledon 3-0, a fixture and result to this day has Ladbrokes scratching their heads.
So now the question is - who do we want to win when it's a top-half team playing a bottom-half team? The pessimist in me still wants the bottom teams to lose to help us avoid relegation. I think that will stay with me until it is mathematically impossible for us to go down. Old habits die hard.
You are right logically. But emotions are not logical. I would have been a hopeless football manager. You're better off not worrying about anyone else this stage of the season and concentrating on your own results. Planning your season around avoiding relegation is a sure-fire way of getting entangled in it. Benny's post above yours shows what's possible when you go about your own business and fuck the rest.
I know exactly where you’re coming from. We can slip 3 places today, but in actual fact that would probably be the ideal scenario. So now the question is - who do we want to win when it's a top-half team playing a bottom-half team? We won our first 3 games (Southampton H, Leeds H, Everton A from memory) and were top for 10 games or so, even after losing at Old Trafford. Man Utd however did knock us off the top not long afterwards.Didn't we go top for a while at the beginning of 1971-72 ?
Warnock managed County, for whom Tony Agana played at the time too.We briefly went 7th after winning 3-1 at Notts County just after we completed the double over the Pigs in 1992. We finished 9th that season.
Actually we won the 3 you mention plus Arsenal away. In total we won 8 of the first 10 and drew the other 2. We’ll win both home games. We've had a very good start to the season, and been difficult to beat. I'm surprised and happy that we find ourselves in the top half. But abit mindful that there are alot of teams around the 10-13 point mark. So we could find ourselves hovering around the lower middle/bottom 6 after another 3 games. Our next 3 games are:-
Burnley (h)
Spurs (a)
Man Utd (h)
I would be very happy with a return of 4 points from those games. Obviously a win against Burnley and hopefully a point either from spurs or man utd.
Although we could probably lose against Burnley and get a win against either spurs or man utd such is the unpredictability of the league this year.
If anybody wants a very battered original Green Un from Sept 18th 1971 let me know.Didn't we go top for a while at the beginning of 1971-72 ?
