Looking back at the table,a lot of teams had a decent chance of promotion at that stage, Carlisle had no away form which let them down badly,Luton had 2 games in hand on us at that stage, that Hull score must have gutted them,so quite a few teams were kicking themselves at the end of the season
Not a massively high points quote - like for like

Attendances also poor

im sure i was at that reserve game silent blackburn and the 5 - 2 scoreline rings a bell went to quite a few reserve games at the lane round about that time wasnt the game on motd ?

Blades 5 (Woodward, Ford, Reece, Colquhoun, Dearden) Blackburn 0.

It was a rainy day and on the way to the match in my dad's car, he stopped at Meadowhead to go in a phone box (we didnt have a phone at home at the time), I followed him wondering what he was doing. He said he was ringing the bookies to find out the odds for us to finish the season as 2nd division champions and he said that he will make the bet.

Now to the match. We scored twice in the first 3 minutes!

We carried on attacking but Blackburn's keeper, Roger Jones, made some good stops and I remember him running out of the penalty box to punch away a counter attacking chance which would have been a red card offence nowadays. Eventually we got our third goal just before half time after Jones made a fantastic double save and Reece fired in the rebound

In the 2nd half Colquhoun headed in our 4th and near the end Dearden got our 5th

Then we were awarded a penalty but Ted Hemsley's effort ended up at the back of the Kop.

The ref was Norman Burtenshaw and the crowd thought he had a good game. Seven weeks later he refereed the Liverpool v Arsenal FA Cup final.

Looking at the other results in the 2nd division, Hull had lost again but to Luton who were only 2 points behind us with 2 games in hand. We were now in 3rd position a point behind Cardiff and Leicester, both have a game in hand over us.

For some reason, probably the weather, I remember this game really well. My dad stood towards the back of the John Street terrace and I propped myself at the front by the railings with the hood up on my Parka in a vain attempt to keep the rain off. I remember the pitch cutting up really badly but our lads seemed to revel in it as we ran them ragged. I loved those days, I'd go back in a flash.

Remember that game so well - rain like stair rods . Great post as always . Good crowd at St Andrew’s that day .

Remember going to first game of that season at Leyton Orient, think Barnwell made his debut. Set off on midnight train and made for Borough market, got their at 4.00 am and stayed till about 9.00. Then to another one back of Kings Cross till about 11.00. Next to Carnaby St to see the John Stephen Best Dress Man awards on store balcony. Barry Gibb won and was presented by previous years winner Peter, Jason King, Wyngarde. Then off to game and local pubs. Game was a nightmare, think we lost 3-1. After game met up with Blades at ( "half past five" ) Cockney Pride. Then drinking until last train at midnight. Home by 5.00am. Happy days. Can remember the number of Blades without train tickets who hid under the seats in the carriage compartments and a couple on luggage racks.

Bristol City 0 Blades 1 (Currie)

I was at Derby deaf school that day as my class were taking part in the National Deaf Children Society Mime contest. Pat Keysell (from the Vision On tv programme) was one of the judges. I was the Policeman arresting a thief in the performance produced by my class teacher. At the end of the contest, during Pat Keysell's speech, my class were selected to compete in the Mime finals at London in June.

The below photo was taken a few weeks later at Maud Maxfield school. Over the years the photo had become dog eared and the top left part of it had got missing. I am the only person in the photo that is still alive.

There were 8 of us in the cast but 3 of them are sadly no longer on this earth.

After the Mime contest my family went to do some shopping in the town centre (Derby wasnt a city then). I was thinking how the Blades were doing at Bristol City and when we walked through the market stalls, my dad heard a transistor radio on one of the stalls announcing the football results so he pulled out his newspaper that he had in his suit pocket and a pen so that he would write down the results on the back page of the paper and I would be watching him jotting down. I waited patiently as he was writing down the first division scores before moving on to the 2nd division, I was getting more nervous and when it came down to our match , he wrote down 0-1, I yelled in joy probably making the people near us think I was mad. My yell had caused my dad to miss the score for Leicester v Oxford which was just below our match in the list. Luckily the radio announced the results again and this time we did get the Leicester v Oxford score which was 0-0 and it was good news to us! Hull and Carlisle dropped a point too. Both Cardiff and Luton lost and we were back to 2nd place.

TC celebrating his goal.

They were getting great gates , out of synch with the rest of the league

Yes,it was a time when thousands extra could turn up for a game just to see one player, even if he was playing for your opponents, Francis was probably seen as a phenomenon there
can remember going to hillsbro in april 72 when brum were going for promotion birmingham fans took over the ground think they won 2 - 1 and keep right on echoed round the ground that day

Went to his house in Virginia Water to take some documents for Irwin Mitchell ( I think he sold his Sheffield house to Nas) and he was the nicest person, talked about football and was genuinely interested in my opinion. Great guy, great player despite the pig connection

He did sell his house to Nas. Nas got a bit touchy about it on Fantasy Football
