im sure i was at that reserve game silent blackburn and the 5 - 2 scoreline rings a bell went to quite a few reserve games at the lane round about that time wasnt the game on motd ?

Blades 5 (Woodward, Ford, Reece, Colquhoun, Dearden) Blackburn 0.
It was a rainy day and on the way to the match in my dad's car, he stopped at Meadowhead to go in a phone box (we didnt have a phone at home at the time), I followed him wondering what he was doing. He said he was ringing the bookies to find out the odds for us to finish the season as 2nd division champions and he said that he will make the bet.
Now to the match. We scored twice in the first 3 minutes!
Woody in the 1st minute
Ford in the 3rd minute
We carried on attacking but Blackburn's keeper, Roger Jones, made some good stops and I remember him running out of the penalty box to punch away a counter attacking chance which would have been a red card offence nowadays. Eventually we got our third goal just before half time after Jones made a fantastic double save and Reece fired in the rebound
In the 2nd half Colquhoun headed in our 4th and near the end Dearden got our 5th
Then we were awarded a penalty but Ted Hemsley's effort ended up at the back of the Kop.
The ref was Norman Burtenshaw and the crowd thought he had a good game. Seven weeks later he refereed the Liverpool v Arsenal FA Cup final.
Looking at the other results in the 2nd division, Hull had lost again but to Luton who were only 2 points behind us with 2 games in hand. We were now in 3rd position a point behind Cardiff and Leicester, both have a game in hand over us.

For some reason, probably the weather, I remember this game really well. My dad stood towards the back of the John Street terrace and I propped myself at the front by the railings with the hood up on my Parka in a vain attempt to keep the rain off. I remember the pitch cutting up really badly but our lads seemed to revel in it as we ran them ragged. I loved those days, I'd go back in a flash.

Remember that game so well - rain like stair rods . Great post as always . Good crowd at St Andrew’s that day .
Remember going to first game of that season at Leyton Orient, think Barnwell made his debut. Set off on midnight train and made for Borough market, got their at 4.00 am and stayed till about 9.00. Then to another one back of Kings Cross till about 11.00. Next to Carnaby St to see the John Stephen Best Dress Man awards on store balcony. Barry Gibb won and was presented by previous years winner Peter, Jason King, Wyngarde. Then off to game and local pubs. Game was a nightmare, think we lost 3-1. After game met up with Blades at ( "half past five" ) Cockney Pride. Then drinking until last train at midnight. Home by 5.00am. Happy days. Can remember the number of Blades without train tickets who hid under the seats in the carriage compartments and a couple on luggage racks.
