Bill Punton transferred to Scunthorpe United.

I struggled to find reports of Punton's move and the below was the best I could get. I believe he played for Scunthorpe on that night after his transfer early in the day.

We became the only 9th club to enter the 50th season (some might say 51 because we started the 1939-40 season as a top flight club!) in the top division of the league.
The table for number of seasons in the top flight up to and including 1967-68 season looked like this

1= Aston Villa , Everton 65 seasons
3. Sunderland 61
4. Bolton Wanderers 58
5. Blackburn Rovers 54
6 = Liverpool, WBA 53
8. Arsenal 51
9. Sheffield United 50
10. Wendy 49
11 = Newcastle United, Manchester City 48
13. Preston North End 46
14 = Burnley, Wolves 45
16. Manchester United 44
17. Derby County 43
18. Chelsea 41

For Spurs it was their only 34th season in top flight!

We decided to bring back the white shorts that had brought us luck in the home games between September and December 1966 ( 6 league - won 4 drew 1 and lost 1, 4 League Cup - won 3 and lost 1)

I have never seen a more glossy, bright and colourful squad photo as the one below in our history!

Back row; Barry Wagstaff, Reg Matthewson, David Munks, Alan Hodgkinson, Ken Mallender, Bob Widdowson, Alan Birchenall, Frank Barlow, Bernard Shaw
Front row; Mick Hill, Alan Woodward, Tony Wagstaff, Mick Jones, Len Badger, Gil Reece, Phil Cliff, Tom Fenoughty

We had another squad photo during the summer too but not sure if the below was the first or second one, Willie Smith is in it but not in the other one!

Bill Punton was still with the club but I think he was still living in Norwich, trained with Norwich City and travelled to our matches, if selected.

We had finished in 10th place in the previous season, 9th place in the season before. No new signings during the summer, Cec Coldwell and Graham Shaw (left for Doncaster Rovers) had played their last 1st team game for us. With the young players in our squad being a year older and more mature, would our fans be more optimistic for the coming season?

My dad probably did take me to a few games because I wanted to be with him when he says "I am off to the match". On each occasion my antics/lack of concentration/ demands for refreshment would irritate him so when we return home, he would say to my mum "he isnt ready yet!". I welcome your memories of the matches and I would be interested in your recollections.
I grew up in London and my dad was a Blade. This was the season I too become a Blade.I have very scant memories of a couple of 2-0 league game defeats at possibly Chelsea and Arsenal either this season or the one before but I've not looked them up and I'm relying on memory. Anyway the F.A Cup 3rd round tie at Watford was the first time I'd ever seen United fans in any numbers and I was hooked. Also remember asking my dad who Bob Widdowson and Mick Hill were(I think Hill scored the only goal). Then the 4th round and my first ever visit to the lane which cemented my future as a life long Blade. 2-1 against Blackpool as I recall. "Home game" next and Phil Cliff's 2 at Upton Park and the young me convinced we were going to win the cup. I can't remember why we couldn't go to Leeds but I was convinced for years that my absence led to United being knocked out. My dad started taking me to Sheffield fairly regularly after that and years later I ended being a season ticket holder for years. Anyway, apologies for rambling on but that particular era resonates with me.

Watford report will be posted tomorrow. Reports of the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal can be seen in the 1966-67 thread

FA Cup 3rd round

Watford 0 Blades 1 (Hill)

An 18 year old Watford player who had already played 18 1st team games scoring 9 goals was sat in the crowd wondering what he had done wrong to be left out of the squad in an important FA Cup match......

Thanks for that. Believe it or not, that disappointing game was a memorable one for me. I was a student in the north-east at the time, and went behind the goal for Hodgy’s 500th game. I managed to shout loud enough when he ran towards the goal pre-kick-off to get a smile and a wave from him. It was perishing cold that day, and Mrs HBT was also a student up there, so I persuaded her to go to her first ever football match. The experience of her feet sticking to the frozen terracing was enough to convince her that watching football was not a good idea. But 6 months later, we got married❤️

For some reason, as an impressionable 7 year old in ‘67. I always linked Alan Birchenall with Ilya Kuryakin from the man from U.N.C.L.E. Both hero’s at the time - must have been the blond hair.
I also remember Mick Jones getting clattered several times by Bobby Moore during a floodlit FA Cup tie against West Ham. When the ball was swung into our penalty area, Jones jogged up to him on half-way and kicked him so hard he went off. Ref and linesmen never saw it - crowd went mad, those were the days 😉

My memories from this time was a visit to a away game a Ashton Gate Bristol City I think it might have been a cup game. Their programme was full of praise for a player called John Atyeho who was probably in his last season for them.
