11/7/1966

60 years ago today was the first match of the 1966 World Cup. England drew 0-0 against Uruguay. The whole tournament lasted less than three weeks. This is me with a classmate, Gillian, at the Maud Maxfield school prize day which was usually held in the middle of July. I have no memory of being on the stage that day also I have no memory of the 1966 World Cup despite that my dad taking me to watch the group match between Spain v Switzerland at Hillsborough on Friday evening 15th July (possibly on the same day as the prize day?)

Day 1 ,, England 0 Uruguay 0 , at Wembley (87,148) ,
Banks Cohen Wilson Stiles JCharlton Moore Ball Greaves RCharlton Hunt Connelly
This was the first time in 52 games that England had failed to score at Wembley ,
The Queen opened the tournament but slight slip up at Full Time where National Anthem was to be played , although Uruguay players remained on the pitch England players JCharlton,Greaves , Hunt , and Connelly had already left the pitch,( a bit different to modern times when players take ages to leave , although we don't have National Anthem at end of game) ,
The FA urging fans not to buy tickets from touts as tickets still available for all group games , although only standing tickets available for the games in Sheffield at Hillsborough
Bobby Moore and Jack Charlton became the first England players to be drugged tested at a World Cup ,

Tuesday 12 July 1966 , 3 games all 3 730pm kick-off ,, World Cup arrives in Sheffield with West Germany beating Switzerland 5-0 in front of 36127 at Hillsborough, while Brazil beat Bulgaria at Goodison Park in front of 47038 and USSR beating North Korea at Ayresome Park with 23006 there ,
It was thought that yesterday's game at Wembley with an attendance figure of 87148 announced was only watched by 75000 with the thought people had bought blocks of tickets so they got tickets for the later stages , ,The drug testing carried out on 4 players yesterday 2 from Uruguay with Jack Charlton and Bobby Moore came back clear ,
In a different slant to Southampton spying last season England welcomed a spy into their camp with the squad visiting Pinewood Studio and meeting James Bond ( Sean Connery )
The worry / concern for FIFA is tomorrow's game Italy v Chile a repeat of their 1962 "battle"

Wednesday 13 July 1966 , 4 games at World Cup , ,in England's Group France and Mexico draw 1-1 at Wembley, so both games ending in draws , the attendance was given as 69237 but like the England/ Uruguay it is thought alot with tickets didn't turn up with an estimate of only 55000 at the game , Argentina beat Spain 2-1 at Villa Park Infront of 42738 , the Spain manager not happy with the Argentina tackling (that may be mentioned again later in the tournament) , but the fears of a repeat battle of 1962 between Italy and Chile didn't occur as the match passed off peacefully with a 27199 crowd at Roker Park seeing Italy beat Chile 2-0 , in the other game 29886 were at Old Trafford to see Portugal beat Hungary 3-1

Thursday 14 July 1966 is a rest day with no fixtures, with all the teams having played 1game , in Group 1 we have England, Uruguay, France and Mexico all on 1 point, FIFA , reportedly saying they are unsure how to calculate goal DIFFERENCE if a team finishes with no goals against ( which is better 0-0 or 1-1 ) I find it difficult to think that that had not previously considered this ( but then again it is FIFA ) ,they saying they will cross that bridge when they come to it ,, surely this should have been determined before even if it a very unlikely occurrence ,, Group 2 has Argentina and West Germany on 2points both Spain and Switzerland on 0 ,, Group 3 Portugal and Brazil on 2 points Hungary and Bulgaria on 0 , while Group 4 has USSRand Italy on 2 with Chile and North Korea on 0 ( only 2 points for a win back in '66)
None of the games have so far sold out ,
There were problems at Roker Park where a gent went to see where his seat was the day before the game , he was on Row I , but there wasn't one the painter painting the row numbers had gone from H to J so he was hastily recalled
A bit of worry in the Brazil camp , they due to face Hungary tomorrow but Pele was unable to take part in their training at Bolton
The BBC were happy with viewing figures 19 million had watched England v Uruguay
There was major excitement accros the city with their scoreboard on the East Bank ,it had been loaned to them but they were considering buying it
In order to bring all the grounds up to standard The Government had awarded £500,000 fund of this the largest recipients were Wednesday with £78,700 ( I think you still see the same paintwork if you drive along Penistone Road )

Friday 15 July 1966 , as teams go into their 2nd games there are another 4 games , again all with the same kick-off time of 7-30pm . Fears that Pele would not be fit to play for Brazil materialised and to make matters worse the tournament favourites lost 3-1 to Hungary at Goodison Park in front of 51387 ,In Sheffield, Switzerland lose again despite being ahead at halftime and having a late equaliser disallowed 2-1 against Spain 32008 at Hillsborough, ,at Ayresome Park only 13729 were there to see North Korea get their first ever World Cup point with an 88th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Chile ,, Uruguay go top of England's group coming from behind to beat France in front of 45662 at White City in London , The game being played at White City because tho owner of Wembley refused to allow Wembley to be used because Friday night was greyhound racing night ,

That’s the Cherry Tree boarding house at Brid . They still have a plaque in the guest lounge commemorating the stay

Stayed there many times , lovely breakfasts 🍳 and Wards on tap
Remember Han Bong Jin and Pak Doo Ik. Memory must have been decent at that time, can still remember 5 names of the Russian Speedway team.

Enjoyed watching that ,,, there didn't seem much wrong with (our) Martin Peters headed goal ,,, I hope Bobby Charlton didn't get in trouble for kicking the ball at the photographer harder than Wilder kicked the ball into the crowd this season ,, ,, do we have any idea who the commentator was ? I don't recognise his voice
