11/7/1966

60 years ago today was the first match of the 1966 World Cup. England drew 0-0 against Uruguay. The whole tournament lasted less than three weeks. This is me with a classmate, Gillian, at the Maud Maxfield school prize day which was usually held in the middle of July. I have no memory of being on the stage that day also I have no memory of the 1966 World Cup despite that my dad taking me to watch the group match between Spain v Switzerland at Hillsborough on Friday evening 15th July (possibly on the same day as the prize day?)

Day 1 ,, England 0 Uruguay 0 , at Wembley (87,148) ,
Banks Cohen Wilson Stiles JCharlton Moore Ball Greaves RCharlton Hunt Connelly
This was the first time in 52 games that England had failed to score at Wembley ,
The Queen opened the tournament but slight slip up at Full Time where National Anthem was to be played , although Uruguay players remained on the pitch England players JCharlton,Greaves , Hunt , and Connelly had already left the pitch,( a bit different to modern times when players take ages to leave , although we don't have National Anthem at end of game) ,
The FA urging fans not to buy tickets from touts as tickets still available for all group games , although only standing tickets available for the games in Sheffield at Hillsborough
Bobby Moore and Jack Charlton became the first England players to be drugged tested at a World Cup ,

Tuesday 12 July 1966 , 3 games all 3 730pm kick-off ,, World Cup arrives in Sheffield with West Germany beating Switzerland 5-0 in front of 36127 at Hillsborough, while Brazil beat Bulgaria at Goodison Park in front of 47038 and USSR beating North Korea at Ayresome Park with 23006 there ,
It was thought that yesterday's game at Wembley with an attendance figure of 87148 announced was only watched by 75000 with the thought people had bought blocks of tickets so they got tickets for the later stages , ,The drug testing carried out on 4 players yesterday 2 from Uruguay with Jack Charlton and Bobby Moore came back clear ,
In a different slant to Southampton spying last season England welcomed a spy into their camp with the squad visiting Pinewood Studio and meeting James Bond ( Sean Connery )
The worry / concern for FIFA is tomorrow's game Italy v Chile a repeat of their 1962 "battle"
