So many quality, ball playing midfielders. One of the league's best goal scorers, a future England centre half on our books, as well as Morgs and Kilgallon... Kyle Naughton, the best full back we'd seen until... Kyle Walker a year or so later.

Incredible depth to the squad too.

Not like we didn't all know we were massively underachieving at the time, though.

There are some good players in there! Why oh why did Warnock buy all those foreign nobodies when we were in the premier league? We had a good shot at staying up and buying proven quality and we bought Luton Shelton, Christian Nade and Ahmed Fathi what a joke.

Because their wages were cheap and we wouldn't pay for some of his first choice targets. I don't think it was Nade either, it was Kilgallon and Stead.

Don't dis Nade who do you think keeps this forum running eh?

Then we wasted money in the league below, so many errors led us to league one, I just hope we have learned from this mistakes.

Think I'm right in saying that at one point that season we could have put out this team

Killgallon
Morgan
Cahill

Gillespie
Speed
Tonge
Quinn

Beattie
Hulse

Subs

Huge waste. We should have spent it to stay up, not get back up. In those days you only got two years parachute payments so our big signings should have been when we went up, so that their contracts expired as the parachute payments ran out (if we went down). It would have given us a better chance of staying up and would have left us in a better financial situation.

After promotion, we did almost everything wrong. Everything that clubs get criticised. We sat on the fence with Warnock. It's clear now KM was really upset by him fannying around with Portsmouth and I think he was reluctant to back him as much as he could because he wasn't totally confident in him. The Akinbye/Horsfield debacle probably didn't help either.

IMO, and with the obvious benefit of hindsight, he should have either allowed Warnock to sign players at the level and cost that Robson was allowed to, or sack him. And if he wasn't going to sack him, give him a new contract. Back him or sack him.

That was the first mistake. Replacing him with Robson and literally giving a blank cheque to a functioning alcoholic was the second. Blackwell was the third. Sacking Blackwell when we did and replacing him with a rookie was the fourth.

You can't get four big calls wrong in a row and get away with it.

Fucking don't. That picture. He was the best English player when I was a teenager, he was the complete midfielder. Now I just see him as the bloke who helped set our club back twenty years.

50 odd players? Did we really have a squad over theseason that big?

I can't help thinking that if he did something with his fringe then things would have gone better for him in management

How in the name of Christ did Robson manage to fuck up so much with a side of that quality? He had a better squad than the one Warnock had in the prem.

You missed out allowing our top star "football man" Robinson, to get involved. AIUI, he signed back Billy Sharp before Robson joined and then found that Mogadon Man didn't fancy him. £1.5m down the toilet immediately.

Joining us from the footballing giant that is Bury FC, our Terry really knew his stuff and loved the Premier meetings where he rubbed shoulders with the great and the good. If you had a microphone available it was a toss up whether Robinson or Warnock would be the first to start spouting rubbish.

Oh, he certainly played his part. As did Bitch and Wanker.

IMO probably the saddest thing about looking at that list, is that 2 of those players are no longer alive.

Scary to think that just a decade ago, we had 2 very fit men aiming to help us gain promotion... and now.... *Shudder*

Makes me appreciate what I've got.
