Was it ? I always thought it was one of those special Sheffield United contracts which lets the player decide if he wants to activate the extension clauses.
I thought we gave him a new contract in DW's second year. It extended his contract period but for a lower wage than the championship money he was on.

We didn't miss 'him', just don't like we don't miss Doyle.

We miss players like them, better players who do what they do but at a better standard than Conference level. We do not miss Doyle and we won't miss Collins, fact.

Though Doyle was a top bloke, I have nothing against him at all and wish him all the best. But I despise Collins.

Doyle became a top bloke for this:

That's right as I remember. But let's blame Clough.

He signed a 2.5 year deal when he joined in January 2011, taking him to the end of the 2012-13 season. In November 2012 he extended that contract by a further 2 years with the option of a third year. That contract would have expired in June 2015 but either Clough, Adkins or Collins himself took up the option and extended it to the end of this season.

He might have reduced his wages from the Championship level they were at but he's probably still 2nd or 3rd highest paid at the Lane. So long Neill, good luck in the future but you won't be missed.

Can't blame the guy - he has two young children and this represents a great opportunity for him - Good Luck Neil Collins

Of the move and his time with the Blades, Collins added: "These opportunities only come along once in a lifetime and it was the right move for me and my family at this point in my career, I am indebted to the club for allowing me to take up this opportunity.

"There have been some devastating lows but some fantastic highs during my time at Bramall Lane and there is no question that once a Blade always a Blade - this wonderful club has a way of getting under your skin.

"I'd like to thank the players and staff I had the pleasure of working alongside. There are so many fantastic people working behind the scenes that deserve to see the club back where it belongs along with the long suffering fans who are the most loyal in the country.

"Thank you for the memories and all the best in the future."

Neill Collins has had his Blades contract terminated by mutual consent, to enable him to further his career in the United States.

An opportunity has arisen for the Scot to join North American Soccer League outfit Tampa Bay Rowdies and United have released the defender from the remaining months of his current deal, which was set to expire in the summer, to help facilitate the switch.

Collins has spent over five years at Bramall Lane, having joined from Leeds United in January 2011, and has amassed over 200 starts as a Blade, scoring 14 times in the process.

Manager Nigel Adkins thanked the defender for his efforts, commenting: "Over a number of years, Neill has given great service to the club and we wish him all the best with this next chapter in his career."

Recognised as the division below Major League Soccer, the North American Soccer League season starts in April, hence the timing of the switch. The 32-year-old won't be the first Scottish Blade to have represented the Rowdies, winger Stewart Scullion enjoyed a spell in the US during the mid 1970s.

Of the move and his time with the Blades, Collins added: "These opportunities only come along once in a lifetime and it was the right move for me and my family at this point in my career, I am indebted to the club for allowing me to take up this opportunity.

[CONFIRMED]

Joining the Tampa Bay Rowdies whoever the fuck they are.

From Wikipedia -

An attorney from Tampa won the club's name-the-team contest and was given a lifetime pass to all home games along with a trip to Acapulco for his efforts.[36] The Rowdies' fans were known as "Fannies". Advertisements for the club declared that "Soccer is a kick in the grass" and encouraged their supporters to "Get up, got out, and get Rowdy!" and to "make a fanny of yourself!". The calls were answered by fans who threw confetti, drank beer, chanted during games, and generally "let the guys know we're behind them."[37] One memorable fan named Bob Rogers won a "Rowdiest Fan" contest by donning a giant soccer head and throwing himself into the Tampa Stadium goal. The club gave "Soccer Head" complimentary tickets to future games so that he could continue his antics for the crowd, even bringing him along when the Rowdies played in Soccer Bowl '79.[38]

While anyone who supported the club could call themselves a Fanny, members of the official Rowdies Fan Club particularly claimed the moniker as their own. The fan club held regular meetings and social events and published a newsletter.

Hopefully, any payoff will be minimal if he's walked straight into a new contract.

I was in Portugal when the 1st match of the 2013/14 season took place, if I remember correctly it was a Friday night game against Notts County. Anyway, I managed to find a nice quiet bar which had the game on and proceeded to watch as I quaffed shite but refreshing beer. At the other end of the bar I noticed a women watching the game with vocal hawk-like interest. At half time, while on the way back from a filthy bog I got talking to her and it turned out she was Collins' mother. I recall her saying how much he loved being at Sheffield United. Spent the 2nd half watching the game with her. Pleasant lady but absolutely terrible set of gnashers.

Good luck Collo' and thanks for your help in making the 2011/12 season the most enjoyable for years.

TB.

I want him to stay after reading that. In fact I want him to be our next manager.

Good luck to the lad, not the most talented footballer but appeared to give 100% when played. Wish the more so called "talented players" put in the same shift. Collins needed to be moved on but neither Edgar or Baptiste should be his permanent replacement. We need a hell of an improvement from the players and especially the manager.

lining up alongside football greats Freddy Adu and the ex dingle Georgi Hristov

Nice signing off statement. Once a Blade, always a Blade. Are we unique in that respect, with so many ex-players (many who have gone on to play for others teams) who would call themselves a Blade?
'This club has a way of getting under your skin' - Like a rash you can't itch sometimes :)

Name the other c/h's to pick from, the c/h pool is lacking.

A situation created by NA, the priority last year under NC was CB it still is, please don't say signing Edgar as an excuse. NA failure to address this position has created the disaster this season is becoming,

I remember plenty of his devastating lows. His highs on the other hand.......

Does anyone have any fond memories of Collins? Granted my memory is poor, but I'm struggling.

I'll stop short of calling him names (which isn't something I've done whilst watching him play), but he really is dog shit at football.

Good luck to him, anyway.

Agree about Edgar but Baptist deserves more than that, he,s the kind of aggressive defender we need
a couple more like him and we wouldn't be the soft touch we are at present. Tel Kennedy is of the same kind, but as we and he knows bad knees let him down and that is a shame as he is a leader.
I rated Tel more than Maguire in that youth team,he always leads from the front and shows no fear, which is why
More than not caused his problems
He's not managed to stay fit since and I rue that fact. But he is still playing so hopefully he may have a run where he's injury free

He popped up for a headed winner at Huddersfield a few years ago that I rather enjoyed.

Other than that unrelenting dreadfulness.

As he's joining Tampa Bay, he'll have a lovely house on the beach in Clearwater or St. Petes. Wouldn't feel too sorry for him.
