I know this might seem like the wrong time to put it because he didn't have the best game on saturday, but that kid has bags of potential.

It's imperative that he hits the gym, that much is a fact, but he is such a good little footballer at such a young age. While the rest of our midfielders, barring Coutts, all seem to need 3 touches before releasing the ball - Reed knows how he's going to to control it, how fast it's coming, and where he's going to put it before it even lands at his feet. As a deep playmaker he's the best we've got. He's NEVER afraid to take the ball under pressure, and rarely loses it.

He's only a young lad and he is bound to get better, I'd give him the rest of the season without a doubt. In a 3 in midfield he has the right amount of protection to be able to dictate the play, which he did for periods on saturday.

Will be interesting to see how he copes without Hammond by his side though, and who slots in. Does Adkins disrupt the defence, pushing Basham into centre mid and Collins back at centre half? In a 3, that's dangerous for me. I'd let Flo or Coutts do it.

The lad has represented England at his age level, hes's 18. People are writing him off, they're crackers.

I'd like to see him as a regular for the rest of the season at the base of a footballing midfield three. We might as well experiment, we might as well give him some responsibility and a chance to develop, we've not realistically got much to play for. In any case surely results wouldn't be much worse. Alongside Coutts and Cuvelier he'd be part of a midfield that would keep the ball more so wouldn't have to do as much defending. Having those two alongside him would also offer a good attacking balance as both can double up as wingers so the wing backs would be less isolated. Unfortunately though I fear the only chance we'll get to see anything like this is while our high earning yellow card machine is banned.

Likewise
He's very comfortable on the ball and will only get better as we (or more likely just he...) progress up the leagues with the extra time on the ball.

He might not play for England, he might not play in the Premiership, but that all depends on his development. There's a decent chance he could.

He's a young lad who can improve so it's worth giving him the game-time this season as realistically, we're very unlikely to achieve anything this season. I don't know to what extent he'll make it. His size is a real obstacle but doesn't automatically preclude him from being successful. He is always likely to need a minder in that midfield though and that's something Hammond brings to the table. It'll be interesting to see how we approach his absence. I'd also like to see Kieron Wallace getting more game time either at LWB, LCM or LCM as he's another we ought to be looking to develop with an eye on next season. Same goes for DCL too.

On Saturday Reed always made himself available for the ball, he would come deep or move into space and take the ball, carried it and made passes. He wasn't always accurate, sometimes he expected people to move and when they didn't the pass goes astray, but he showed every time.

On the other hand, in the first half, Hammond hid. He would find the nearest Vale player and sprint towards him, and this is when we had possession. He improved later, but he needs to become open more to earn the money he's paid.

Not sure he's ready to hit the gym yet. It seems players are advised to wait until they've finished growing before they start serious gym work.

I'm not really sure why that is, possibly something to do with affecting your agility at a time when you need to be perfecting your technique.

Like that midget at Barcelona? I'm not suggesting that Reed will be the next Lionel Messi, but it's not all about size.
If you're good enough you're tall enough.

Like I say in the line you quoted "it doesn't automatically preclude him from being successful" but it is most certainly an obstacle.

Reminds me of Will Hughes at Derby. He keeps the play moving very quickly and is always looking to be progressive. I actually think he's the best 'footballer' at the Lane. Give him 3 or 4 years and he'll be in the Premier League (assuming he keeps his head right).

Agree. Time to give him a bit of an extended run. And in that pivotal role.

To say he's so young, he's got an admirable willingness about him to take on responsibility.

But really needs to be part of a midfield three, rather than not used to his best advantage (& potentially being often overrun) in a two.

Maybe you need to put that in very plain English before this thread descends into a list of small players who were decent.

Did I not already do that? I'll try again.

Size comes in handy. Small players can be good but it's easier to be successful in the game if you are big and good rather than small and good. Is that OK?

PS. Some more good small players

Maradona
Xavi
Campos
Zola
Iniesta

Plus plenty of cameos for Calvert-Lewin when games are in the bag:D, no even when games are in the balance. Height and pace can do wonders and the lad needs encouragement, otherwise send him out on loan again.

Agreed, then we'll know if he can really contribute next season or needs another loan out. Controversial, but I wouldn't mind seeing some other youngsters getting game time such as Diego.

At the Bury game, Calvert Lewin & Che were the only ones performing, sorry not even Reed. Then Adkins goes and subs Lewin..........wrong move

Size doesn't mean strength which is more important. At the moment he doesn't have that strength that players like Doyle ,Cowan ,Peschisolido had ,some tall players like Porter don't have it either ,hopefully he can bulk up in the right way if he is well looked after because you don't want to lose his speed of fitness. we seem to be doing the right things with Adams so hopefully we can do it with him. There is a player in there but only occasionally at the moment.

Really ,were you there ? DC put in one of the weakest performances I have ever seen from a Utd player. He will be very lucky to get a shirt again ,personally I think he is way out of his depth.

I'm all for giving the lad a chance this season. But I get worried when I detect the "ahh, int it nice to see the young 'uns coming through" types waxing lyrical about the most bang average of performances (Doncaster)

I think you're being harsh there, or I just have blinkers on for players who like to pass forward!

I've got the blinkers on for Sheffield United players who look likely to push us on.

It's a small list, and Reed isn't on it yet. Time on his side, size not.

Don't want to go all pinchyesq on you but Hammond has size on his side. He's only 18 which is weird as he's been round for what seems ages, but was only 16 i think when he started against Bristol city or 17 just turned.

Rather give him games than coutts, scougall etc and I think that confidence will bring on his game a lot

I saw him come on as sub for the Under 18s in the cup tie against Everton during Feb 2014. He looked about 14 years old but came on, took control of the midfield and it almost appeared that he was a man amongst boys!

I next saw him warming up as a sub for the 1st team at MK Dons.I didn't know he was on the team sheet and seeing him warming up before the game, then collecting the balls up, it almost appeared that he was just a ball boy.

He's progressed well since then and I think some fans forget that he is not yet 19. For his age I think he is remarkably self assured, appears very sensible and all being well he will join the band of excellent small players of which there have been plenty over the years.

A real ball player,he needs time on the pitch and he will become a real asset to the club.
Must be give time never mind the odd mediocre performance.

Not sure about that, Coutts could take the ball in the tube at rush hour and wriggle out of it.

But along with Coutts and Baxter (sigh), Reed is one of the best 3. At the experienced and old age of 18.

Was there Sat @ Donnie & there Tuesday.

Reed is a good player, and so is Lewin.
You have seen Lewin probably twice? a little nervous maybe on Tuesday , I have watched them both up at the academy along with Dimao & Khan . Your comment is without substance really, so I would say to you watch the space.
