Hamer

To get the best from him you have to basically be prepared to make him your Adel Taraabt.

Play him on midfield and he gives away possession too much. Play him wide and he doesn’t track back consistently enough.

Play him as a 10 off Bamford and tell him to make something happen.

If you want to play 4-4-2 then there really is no spot for him.
We've not had anyone in the Duffy role since Duffy. Hamer is a perfect fit for it. It removes defensive responsibility and allows him to do what he wants. If he loses the ball then there's almost an entire team behind him to win it back.

We're getting a lot of corners this season and a lot of them are from blocked shots from outside the box. This seems to happen when our midfield "just hit it" instead of actually trying to place a shot with pace. When they just hit it in into a crowd it's inevitably going to hit a defender and go off for a corner which McGuiness will head in to the keepers hands, whereas Hamer is more likely to take a second to find a bit of space and actually shoot properly.

Drop Campbell and play Hamer behind either Bamford or Cannon. Both of those actually looks to make runs and Hamer is the only one that can find a pass for them. 2 up front was working until it didn't.

That’s really only going to end up as 4-2-3-1 though isn’t it?

Hamer isn’t going to do equal work tracking back as Peck so you’ll just arrive at Peck playmaking alongside Riedewald anchoring and Hamer further forward with Brooks and O’Hare making up the 3 😉

If we played 5 at the back he could have potentially played the Duffy or McGoldrick roles.
As always its not as simple as writing names into a formation, the players roles will impact where and how they play but I think with Peck and Riedewald we would have a good base to allow our more creative players to do their thing without being exposed like we were under Selles with the midfield 3 of Peck, Hamer and O'Hare.

Ultimately Hamer is one of our best players and hes dangerous going forward, so we should provide a platform for him to go forward and do his thing. 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 tomato/tomato (that saying doesnt really work when typing :))

But your advocating changing our system/formation to accommodate one player, when that one player can't last 90mins, is injury prone and doesn't always look committed...

Plus, conversely, we've looked much better without him in the team.

I get what you’re saying, I think O’Hare could play the same role but then there is a gap on the LW.

I just think Hamer > cannon/ings/campbell and if we can workout a system that essentially swaps Hamer for one of those then we would have a better starting XI

What really fkg wound me up in Wilders post match interview was the reference to I’ve got Peck & Arblaster doing a job for him while not fully fit & last seasons Championships Player Of The Year who can & has played middle of the park sat getting splinters in his arse on the bench 😡😡… and don’t even get me started on how Chong could get a start in front of him in whichever way you shuffle that midfield ?? …I think it’s safe to say that Wilder & Hamer relationship is non existent now …

do you think it could just be a fact that were making sure hamer doesnt get injured which would jeopordise a proposed transfer this month ? dont get me started on chong he would only get on the bench in a sunday regional game on graves park wilder must know this

We could always try and adopt with Gus what Fergie used to do with Scholes back in the day, particularly in his younger days, where they'd have the 4 across the midfield (Beckham, Butt, Keane, Giggs) then have Scholes play off Andy Cole.

Effectively becomes a 4231 with Peck and Arblaster/Riedewald becoming Butt and Keane (if only...) or a 433 pushing one of the wide men in support.

Hamer is essentially a pound shop version of him in as far as he's got plenty of ability but not a natural athlete or especially good at the defensive side of things, particularly with an inability to tackle.

Slot Gus into the midfield when we're defending to make a 5.

Not a chance, he can't tackle to save his life. You only have to look how many yellow cards he gets .......

We've not had anyone in the Duffy role since Duffy. Hamer is a perfect fit for it.

Duffy used to work incredibly hard across the full width of the pitch. Whereas Hamer’s work off the ball is rather more performative than effective.

The trick with Hamer is getting him on the ball in the opposition half so he can play those lightning quick passes that he sees before anyone else can. But I think he’s too static to replicate Duffy. He’d be too easily marked.

The coaching team have taken enormous flak for it, but I’ve yet to see him look any more dangerous than he has when drifting in off the left. He’s harder to pick up, and when he’s tracked inside it leaves room for our fullback to advance.

He’s an insoluble problem - a Rolls Royce on a FIAT chassis.

Been saying this for years. We entered the PL in 2019 with a team who was fitter, more explosive and dynamic than most of the PL teams. Since COVID we've totally unravelled and like you say we're like a Sunday League team. Throw in buying small, weak, slow players and it's a recipe for where we are right now!
Exactly that, our last two seasons in the Prem were such a struggle because we lacked athletes. Every team has 9/10 6ft plus athletes who can run and run now in their team and wear you down. I’d argue the technical quality in the Prem now is lower and to be competitive you need these players as your base.

The fitness over the last few years (even under Hecky) has been shocking. Constantly have players flagging after 60 minutes even at this level. Signing players with long injury histories has compounded this.

Quite damning that two of our recent injury prone players, Bogle and Lowe, have both turned out pretty regularly for Leeds & Wednesday since leaving. Bogle played 44 league games last season and 20 so far this. Lowe managed 34 last season and 20 this for a Wednesday team down to the bare bones. Theres clearly something wrong in our fitness & conditioning and this, and our scouting department, should have been the two priorities for COH.
