could happen , but Adkins needs to take thing real.

If they don't bring in a dominant centre half and decent target man in the loan window (which I can't see happening any time soon) the current lot have very little chance of making the top 6 imo. Concede far too many soft goals, get bullied too easily and have lost too many home games.

There's some very wobbly sides up there.

Surprised about Peterboro's collapse, suppose it shows what happens when you sell your best player in the January transfer window & don't adequately reinvest.

Walsall's trials surprising too. Though still expecting them to go up top 2 with Wigan. Can't see Cloughy's lot lasting the pace.

There's some very wobbly teams in the places just outside the play-offs <especially us>, unfortunately the top 6 are much steadier, that's one of the reasons why I can't see us making the play-offs.

Yesterday's win proves nothing in this season of inconsistencies. It will require a consistent run of results before we can seriously be branded play off contenders.

Should we get promoted, it shows the stupidity of the play off system, that allows a bang average team to get up.

There is no margin for error with Millwall, Coventry and Southend away plus Barnsley at home if their form continues.

We probably need to win 2 or more of those and not lose any.

Very tough to break into the top 6. I reckon we'd need 75 points this season.

Nothing has changed, glad of the win as I was with the Donny result but our inability to string a meaningful run of wins together is still the problem and has been all season. You can only beat what's in front of you but winning those games doesn't hide our shortcomings.

Last 5 games:

Let's assume we can't catch Wigan and Burton.

Gillingham 7 points
Millwall 10 pts
Walsall 5 points
Coventry 4 points
SU 7 pts
Bradford 10pts
Southend 9 pts
Barnsley 12 pts.

There's a lot to play for.
Would be interesting if burton had a meltdown and finish the season in the playoffs with us, can you imagine a playoff final SU v Burton.;)

Barnsley have proven how weak this league is, they were looking doom for relegation but now have a great chance of getting into he playoffs. Just shows what going out there and winning games does for a team, 12 points out of 15 NOW that is promotion form .
our form will only see us drop down the league, we a clinging on to a chance of a playoff spot but damn we still need to improve and improve a lot!

Still got to go for it while we've got a shout. But, even if we somehow fluke a play-off spot, we'd be the fourth worst side there by a margin, a bit like when we lost to Yo!vile.

So, realistically, we're looking at next season now. Which, of course, brings all the imponderables into play - i.e. how much money will Nige have to spend this summer to replace all those out-of-contracters? how's the preparatory scouting going? who'll we have to sell to "balance the books"?

Yes seems Negative Nigel is doing OK with Burton. Shame he left us really.

I thought Clough had enough points in the bank to have another shot at this season but there's no doubt a number of our problems this time around are carried over from his regime - no proper dominant centre half (in fact by the end of last season he finished with a defence of two right backs and two left backs), a lack of characters or leaders, a side lacking height (in the third division this should be a given that you have a few big lads in there) and far too many nice guys (nearly all our players are quite happy to get dumped on their arses, only to get up and trot on without a word of complain). All these problems should have been addressed in the summer by Adkins.

I reckon Cloughy is ideally suited to getting Burton up from where they're at. You know they'll be organised, he doesn't need to take too many risks, can play on the counter and will keep nicking points. Them and Wigan for me.

To restore any hope I have of a play off spot we would have to beat both Rochdale and and Burton and we will lose one possibly both of those games if the opposition put in any sort of performance.

We can forget it.

A top 6 finish would require stringing a number of wins together. We can't even win any single game by more than one goal.

We had the opportunity to make a couple of key additions that could've got us into the play offs - and such is the lack of quality in the top 6, anyone could win them. But we didn't bother and that's it.

Playoffs is still a long shot for me. People say it is only 4 points (but it is effectively 5 really) and games are running out. We have to play some of the better sides in the league at home (where our record is really poor) in Burton, Walsall and Gillingham. We have to go and get 4 points from Rochdale and Burton to just stay in touch before Millwall. If we fail to do that and lose at Millwall then we can start to plan for next season for me. More than that we have not shown we can put a run of 3 or 4 wins together.

Am I the only one whos first thought was "only a few more wins to be mathematically safe" at the end of the game?

I've been thinking this for a number of weeks and even now I'll be happier when we get to about 52 points as this league is tight.

For me our chances of the play offs were ruined by our inaction in January.

We're desperate for reinforcements and we took the decision to cut costs instead.

I'll be very interested to see how they spin things when they come begging for our season ticket money in the summer.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've had reservations about even making the play-offs after we lost those 2 home games to Bury and Colchester. Alarm bells were ringing after Gillingham and then after we'd beaten Swindon away I really thought we would be up there challenging. But then after those 2 games, I realised we were nowhere near as good as I'd thought we were and realised we were in for a bumpy ride.

I take no pleasure in being proved right. Right now I think it would be a bonus to be involved in the play-offs, never mind win them.

It's possible Walsall, Gillingham and Coventry could keep dropping points, but unless we actually start winning games it doesn't matter. Truth is we aren't as good as any of those, so it's a big ask to go on a run. Not sure how we're 7th, on play we deserve to be about 15th. If we were any good, it's doable. But trying to win every game 1-0, when you have the defence we have, is pretty much asking for miracles.

said on another thread I fully expect Burton to get promotion. Because I had predicted them to be in the top 6 back in August. But I dont think we will make play offs because after Rochdale on Saturday we have to play the current top 6 (wigan the expection) & 2 local derbies in our final 13 games.

so cant see where 24+ pts would come from. I can see 16. But on the optimstic side if we do perfotm a miracle & makd the play offs then we playing & beating 5 of current top 6 should give us confidence

We've only concided 1 in the last 3 games.I think the playoffs are achievable but we know what happens after that
