To Those Who Hate Our Home Kit...

Would just like to disagree with the entirety of that post.

How can it be a nod to our history when 98% of it was played in a completely different shirt.

? A shirt that isn't even our traditional colours? That's baffling to me.

its white and red, when did we change our colours from that
we already had the opposite red with white pinstripes
was forced to come round if you change it often enough

Red shorts and socks arn't our traditional colours. A white shirt isn't the traditional shirt either. They're the right colours, yes, but they're as far from a Sheffield United kit as they could have been - without changing the colours.

I remember us losing 3-0 at wolves in the fa cup early sixties we played in red shorts
hodgy scored an og

its a just a red and white negative of the posted 1988 red with white pinstripes so its not far away at all

I've not liked this kit from the off.

It was supposed to be a 125th anniversary shirt, but it was launched at a nondescript home game back in March 2015, which by my own calculations coincided with Sheffield United turning 126.

It looks more like a Nottingham Forest or Charlton away shirt than a Sheffield United home shirt

Our home kit has always been red and white stripes, broad and proper red and white stripes, this isn't a nod to our history, it is an abdication of our history.

It would be great as a away kit, but it is fucking shit as a home shirt

There's been loads of threads on the "homage" shirt with the wrong size stripes (they were butchers stripes not pin stripes) which was late ( would you celebrate your 50th birthday in your 52nd year - nonsensical crap covering up a marketing cock-up I suspect). I am resigned to it and cannot wait to be rid of it. :( Hated it as home strip from the moment I saw it (most probably because its actually a lot closer to our sixties and seventies away shirt - white with red trim - than any home kit we have ever had). Some like it - I accept that, but many hate it.

I would hazard a guess that most Blades more readily identify with a football team playing in red and white stripes that are visible from the stands as opposed to those looking at the shirt because its an Adidas fashion accessory that "looks good with jeans and flipflops". From any distance it just doesn't look like United playing (just another white shirted nomark side). Could this be a contributory factor to the missing buzz at the Lane this season (all that supporting the shirt bit is made that little bit harder with that white number on display - and god knows its been hard enough at times this season). The celebration shirt should have been a unifying celebration of our club for the supporters. I don't think anyone could argue it has been successful in those terms judging by the wildly divergent reactions to it.

ps Why not go the whole hog and play in the blue shorts that went with that kit? Or even the plain white shirt we started with. And the socks should be black - as an homage to our roots. :p Its bad I know but I can't wait for this season to be over so we can dump a load of the dross players whose contracts are up and that homage shirt with them.

It hasn't though, there's been a number of variations. The most obvious one being the very broad white stripe 'Ajax' shirt.
My mate reckons it's a cursed shirt. I think the pigs had a similar blue and white effort when DW got them relegated as I remember him saying 'told you it's fucking cursed, Sheffield clubs play in stripes.'

I don't mind it for a season but I'm looking forward to a nice Addidas 'proper' kit.

If only I could like that 5 more times. Excellent post. I feel exactly the same.

I can't wait for us to go back to our proper home kit, release all the shite and build a much smaller squad of 10x the quality.

Oh and we might even bring some centre backs in as well!

Anyway, that's enough. I don't want to push my luck.

It is a home kit though... Our first red and white home kit. This club is older than your ideals

It's white with a tiny amount of red... It's not traditional, it's historical.

Shall we make it out of heavy cotton as well and get the players to smoke woodbines?

There really was no need to do it, that's my point. No problem with a nod to history, however, keep to the present for the home kit. Red and white is our identity as is the badge.

It's a one off one year nod to a past time of the club.

Get over it.

Sigh...

You can tell we've won when fans are arguing over the kit

The other argument I would give is:

It's one fucking season without thick stripes, that's nine months out of forever. You'll get your badge back too.

Only United fans would whinge about a clubs one-off attempt to mark it's history.

Sorry Tyler, but no amount of whinging by you and others about other fans whinging will change my opinion of how the kit/shirt looks

We ALL have and are entitled to our own opinions mate and the clue for me is given in my avatar!

you rightly point out everyone is entitled to an opinion
taste differs for everyone
however your choice of taste isnt everyones , and as we have a broad fan base , who pay just as much as anyone else does they are entitled to have their choices once every hundred years

There are people who love this kit. I think its a good design,
And as I realise its not all about any individuals choice accept it , as it is part of our clubs past,
Had you been around in 1899 youd probably been up in arms about changing to broad stripes

not much red in man utds homage kit , was there

No there isn't - its the Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club kit (green and gold being the company's colours) from their actual founding year. The club went bankrupt in 1902 with debts of £2,600 and it was from these ashes that Manchester United was formed in 1902 (with red shirts and white shorts). The redcurrant Arsenal homage kit was Dial Square's who later became Arsenal and was a donation to two ex-players (Fred Beardsley and Morris Bates) by Nottingham Forest (together with blue and white hooped socks).

newton heath / man utd same thing
they were that in awe of our white with red pinstripe shirts they changed their name to United after us

players:
Sharp, Dublin, Schmeichel,?,Cantona, Pallister

Added some.. not sure if the reserve keeper is Les Sealey or Fraser Digby. No idea who is the player on far right middle row and the chap with the coat next to him

I think middle row at the left end is Andrei Koncheskis [spelling?] possibly.

Thought you would have got Brian Kidd next to Phelan, Silent!

Isn't what you are saying to me BTL, what I'm saying to Tyler?

My choice of taste most certainly isn't everyone elses. That's the point I was trying to make, that we ALL have opinions. I don't force my opinion on anyone else, just as anyone else shouldn't try to force their opinion on to me.

Why should the fact other people like the kit mean any difference to the people who don't? Fucking strange thread

I like it as it is a very good looking shirt.

I like it because I know that it's only going to be our home shirt for one season, and next season we'll be back in a red and white strip. It's a nice change and the reasons behind it are good.

If it was blue or some shit then yeah, fair enough, have a go. If they told us it was going to be our permanent colours for the foreseeable, have a go. But it's just a nice kit that we're wearing for a good reason for this one season.
