I had assumed that selling Jamie Murphy for £1.7 million and then just staring blankly at the cash would have been the biggest mistake of the Summer / Transfer window. I'm now wondering if letting Doyle go was an even bigger mistake? Basham / Baxter / Reed are proving themselves incapable of playing the role and whilst Doyle was far from perfect, I can't help feeling he'd walk into our team right now.

i would say we miss a Monty / Doyle / McCall type more than a Murphy type of player ...
Last night the gaps between Midfield and Defence were shocking no link and with no leader in the Middle doing the dirty work the hard yards .. if you control the middle of the park you control the game and at the minute we are been over run in the middle putting pressure on an already weak back four, sort the middle out is the KEY priority i feel.

Is this even a serious question? Murphy in Championship, Doyle in league two, let me figure that one out. Maybe we need a player who can tackle and pass in the middle but we certainly don't need Doyle back, he's way past whatever he had in the first place.

We desperately missed a Doyle type in the midfield yesterday as we were overrun and the back 4 had no protection. However, I was for releasing Doyle and stand by that. It's the fact we've not replaced him that is the issue. Murphy is a higher calibre of player thus harder to replace. If we could have got the Hammond deal over line, there would be no issue with releasing Doyle.

A Doyle type (in the sense of a defensive-minded, aggressive, protect-the-back-four type middy) - yes. But a much, much improved version, please. The last thing we need now is a midfielder with the turning circle of the QE2.

That ^^^^

A player who does Doyle's job, but bigger, and meaner. Doyle was ok in a 442 when its a proper 442, with what are effectively centre mids playing in wider positions (ok, Quinny was a bit of both) but I think he'd get caught out in NA's version of 442, with wingers.
Without the quality around him that he had in the first season down here, he looked a bit shit in the side that got Wilson sacked.

We need an old fashioned CM who can get stuck in but pass the ball so we retain possession. I though Bash could do that role but at the moment, he seems a bit lost.

Your right about Doyle, that is how desperate we have become.

Say what you like!!!!!!!!! he has more balls than the rest of the team put together.
UTB!

I think whilst Doyle was certainly doing a very good job, mostly quietly, he was about finished at this level, hence where he has ended up. I don't think Basham's best position is in that defensive midfield role and last night neither Basham nor Baxter took the responsibility for sitting in front of the CB's. The pairing of Collins and Edgar also looked exposed last night as neither is willing/ able to stop players in the way that players like Morgan did. We miss a Morgan type and the closest that we have to this in the club is Kennedy. His legs need to be proved (again) though.

I'd play Basham and Edgar at Centre Back and get that pairing settled.

I'd perhaps be bold enough to play Baxter and Reed in the middle. Reed sitting in front of Baxter and get him running. A lot.

We miss Murphy, but only because Che Adams isn't fit. Woolford and JCR aren't the answer and need replacing very quickly. Woolford hasn't shown anything like what you'd expect, yet.

We miss Doyle loads, we never replaced him with someone who stands in the middle of the pitch pointing and shouting, pretending to tackle and passing it to the opposition players. I really don't get the fixation with a player who is synonymous with this clubs stay in league 1. Just because he did an emotional interview and a cockney walk last year doesn't erase the shite performances he's put in for us over the years.

Baxter and Reed in the middle ?? ,we would get slaughtered.
Ive been told the plan is to get Burn in at centre half and move Edgar into midfield where he prefers to play.

We are missing a player like Doyle certainly, but the formation isn't helping. Colchester and Bury played one up front, with 5 in midfield. Out-numbering us. Baxter, Woolforde and JCR can't tackle, whilst Basham, Baxter and Woolforde have little pace.
It only needs a couple of fast wingers and midfield players who can close down, tackle and move forward and we are in serious trouble.

No brainer Murphy is playing at a team high up in the Championship and getting MOM awards Doyle is playing in League two the sad thing is we are missing both players we have a powder puff load of midfield options not one of them have a nasty streak in them like Doyle did as for having a replacement for Murphy you have to be kidding if you think Che Adams is the answer. Adams has bags of potential but he is not a winger he is young still has lots to learn and will go missing/lose form as all young players do. Don't even mention Woolford nothing to see there apart from another average Joe not deemed good enough for Millwall. How many more times does it have to be said before it sinks in sell your best players and bring in inferior replacements and you are going nowhere unless it is downwards.

Having seen the 'patchy' Sammon replaced by Higdon the other night (a sign the barrel has been truly scraped), I'd think our need for a decent forward such as Murphy far outweighs our need for a 'midfield general'.

I'd return Sammon to Derby he misses as many as he scores and I mean he misses sitters a ten year old could put away

We don't miss either, we miss a board that can provide us with the funds to improve on Doyle and add a CB. Never mind, most thought we had a good transfer window..

Not letting Doyle go BEFORE we were relegated to the third was the mistake.

I think you're confusing Doyle with Paul Thirlwell.
Similar players to me alongside Bobby Ford, Mark Rankine and Jonathan Hunt. Doyle somehow got away with it for 5 years while the others were bombed out.

Judging on Huddersfield fan's views that would be a very big mistake...

Oh, you've just said it for me.
Needing a Doyle type player certainly doesn't mean we need Doyle!

won nowt with either so dont miss either

promotions with both = 0

Fantastic logic at work there. Suppose we haven’t missed Ched, Lowton, McDonald, Maguire, Williamson, Quinn, Blackman, Walker, Naughton, Beattie, Brown, Holdsworth, Tebily, Fjortoft, Borbokis etc. after they were sold (or sent down in Ched’s case). After all, we won nothing with those in the team and were not promoted with them in the team so we obviously didn’t miss them.

What about McGrath, Speed, McCall etc? Did we miss them when they succumbed to age? Obviously not as we weren’t promoted with them in the team.

On the other hand, Gary Flitcroft, Bruce Dyer, Chris Lucketti, Ade Akinbiyi, Geoff Horsfield, Lilian Nalis etc. must have been sorely missed because they were here when we got promoted.

We’d better act quick to get some cash in for Done, Brayford, Adams, Basham etc. as they didn’t get us promoted last season so obviously won’t be missed. Good job we didn’t waste money making Coady’s signing permanent as well given he didn’t take us up in 2014. Obviously didn't miss him last season.

cant get rid of players who only played half a season

if thats if we dont go up this season then get rid

Alf, so I still need to defend him do I?
Leave the bloke alone, you know we do miss him out there on the field.
