Out of our huge squad, as it stand today the players we have who are good enough (in my opinion obviously) to get us automatic promotion are:

GK

Beard/Freeman CB CB LB

RM CM CM Murphy

Done CF

There's a question mark over Basham in midfield for me still. I'm not overly convinced but I'd have him covering at CB. Ditto to Sharp and Connor as they've only played one game, but it's likely you can include the former in that team. Che is another one as doing well in the stroll of pre-season is a different matter to competitive football. I suspect we have an adequate bench already.

There are question marks around J Wallace, Coutts, Howard, Flynn, Flo, Harris, not least will they ever be 100% match fit for a long period of time.

We're a long way off going up as we stand today. On the positive side, I believe bringing two experienced fighters/leaders in at CB & CM would transform some of the others and push them into the good enough category.

I'd probably be happy with this should Wallace stay fit. It's so obvious that a solid spine to the team is missing.

New GK

Brayford New CB New CB Harris
Basham
Wallace New CM
Done..........................Murphy
Sharp (for now)

Sadly, I think there are question marks around Harris in terms of injuries as well. He picks up a heck of a lot an d hardly ever seems to be 100% fit. He's good enough at this level but not the greatest at positioning or marking.

GK
Brayford CB CB LB
RM CM CM Murphy
Sharp CF

J Wallace, Coutts, Done, Cuvelier ????? will they ever be fit enough ? The rest are not good enough or strong enough, given time Adams, McNulty could make it and Reed if he bulks up the rest of the young uns who knows ?

I'd be OK with this, while I think you need to get Adams in there somehow he'd also work very well as an impact sub. If Wallace can stay fit enough I think there's enough clout in midfield, along with having a centre back pairing/keeper that's reliable, that who we have already (Reed for me, although not 90 of every game obviously) would suffice as the other centre mid. Then again, this is pretty much exactly what I said three months ago except read McNulty/Adams instead of Sharp

Gk
Rb freeman or brayford
CB Kennedy
CB
LB Harris
Rm
Cm Basham
Cm reed
Lm Murphy
St Sammon - he impressed me yesterday
St Done/ McNulty

The reality is there are only 7 or 8 players in this squad who are good enough to win us promotion.
Murphy
Sharp
Done
Brayford
JCR on his day
Flynn
Sammon possibly
Adams
We needed to ship out a lot of players and add at least another 4 or 5 in the summer, now we are struggling with the defence and keepers which we all knew from the end of last season.

you were doing well but then mentioned flynn ;)

Was wondering what he played like, a Derby mate of mine does nothing but slag him off, but does admit he is a grafter and has physical presence.

I was thinking about starting a thread like this myself. I have a similar view to most of you. Only players (when fit) we have that are promotion winning players are:

GK- Howard
LB- Brayford
RM- Murphy
LM- Done
CF- Sharp

Some people I'm undecided on:
Adams
Wallace
Harris
Sammon

Bench material:
Basham
Baxter
McNulty

All our younger players need loan spells and not be brought into the first team until they are proven. Everyone else need shipping out or developing before being, if they are ever going to be, good enough.

If anything last season and yesterday's game taught us is that we are desperately lacking in the central areas, and don't have any leadership on the pitch whatsoever. Fetch in 2 CMs and at least 2 CDs and I'll be much happier.

who is good enough, erh
Done, Murphy, Brayford, Reed, Harris
As Ultilty players . Freeman, Basham, Flynn, McNaulty
J Wallace/ Cuvelier (if they can keep fit)
Don't know about Sharp, could come good but don't think he's better then Done at this early stage.

Looking at the injury list we do have some quality that's unfortunately out injured at present, but non I would consider to be a permanent C/half..

Keeper. New

Defence. Brayford new CBs Harris

Mid. Adams Wallace basham Murphy

Attack. Sharp sammon Would this work?

Keeper - new
RB - new/Flynn/Brayford when fit)
LB - new
CH - new/Basham
CH - new
LM - Murphy
RM - JCR/Woolford
CM - new
CM - new
CF - Sharp
CF - Sammon/Adams

That should sort it :)

I'm not convinced Che is good enough to start regularly on the right yet. He's not got n all round game yet. Sharp and Sammon would have been the logical starting pairing yesterday.

I know many people think Baxter is a luxury player, but if he developed a good understanding with Done we could exploit Done's pace to the max. Baxter reminds me a little of Beckham without the free kicks, and probably the workrate. Becks was rarely first name on the team sheet and often used as a sub, especially later in his career when his pace had gone, but he was still able to pick out a killer pass. Baxter could be an option when we're in control of a game, not chasing it.

McNulty too, is only young and could still come good. I'd retain those two as well as Brayford, Done, Che, Murphy, Basham, Flynn, Freeman, Sharp, and possibly J Wallace.

Held the ball up well, gave a lot of effort, gave a great musclur present and was the only attacker in the whole game I think to win headers

The following are in my eyes are definitely good enough to be in a promotion winning side:

Brayford
Murphy
Sharp
Done

All the rest have question marks over their heads for now or are un-proven at this level.

2 of those injured so for now it would be:

GK
RB, CB, CB, LB
RM, CM, CM, Murphy
Sharp, ST

Baxter is easily good enough for this league. However, because he doesnt run around like a headless chicken for 90 minutes, and actually tries to make something happen, he gets slated by the mob who have grown up with workman footballers (the type of football that got us in this league). His drug incident hasnt done him any favours with fans however.

I've said on here yesterday, Basham may not be the midfield answer, he is neither an attacking or defensive midfielder - with a real size and bite to him - and thats exactly what we need. I wouldnt be looking to get rid however,

This feels like a similar discussion to what usually goes on in pre-season, but out of people I think are good enough, I've already mentioned Baxter as one of them, I still would hold on to Basham, I think Sharp, Done, Brayford, Adams, James Wallace, Harris, Reed, Freeman, Murphy, McNulty, Scougs (on last chance for me), Flynn (again, been around this team since the Wilson era and nothing has changed, so not sure how much longer I'd give him) can be in a team to win promotion - with the right additions.

Jury is out on Salmon and Woolford as its too early to judge those lads.

The massive mistake being made was keeping on McEverly in the summer (although that might have been due to an appearence-based contract, and it was before Clough had gone), because he isnt good enough to play centre back, and thinking Collins was going to solve our problems. He is average at best. I cannot understand why we havent got centre backs in before the season started. The same can be said for the keeper - for a long time now, its been a weakness, and would have been my first position to fill in the pre-season (then two centre backs, a nasty b*stard and a quicker one).

So not good enough and should be got rid off (if possible), McEverly, Collins, Howard, Long, Higdon, Coutts (sorry, saw nothing from him last year), JCR (good impact player but if we are cutting the squad, replace with somebody as quick but younger and more consitant)

We finished in the playoffs last year with a weaker squad. Plenty are good enough despite the dogshit performance.

If we sign two decent centre halves I think we'll get automatic.

So after one game we have gone from 'give Adams a 20 year deal' to questioning if he's good enough. Jesus!

All I'm questioning is if he's good enough to be a regular starter at the moment.
