..and a more recent one with the late Tony Capstick.

Capstick promoting alcohol, bit like FIFA having an ethical standards committee.

Makes sense when you read this (good old Wiki), though the North East roots are a little concerning.......

"John Smith's Brewery was an English brewing company based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire. The brewery site is still used to manufacture beer, and John Smith's has been the highest selling ale brand in the United Kingdom since the mid-1990s.

The majority of John Smith's sales are of the nitrogenated Extra Smooth product, although a cask conditioned variant is available nationally. A stronger variant called Magnet is also available in the North East of England. John Smith's Cask and Magnet are produced under licence by Cameron's in Hartlepool."

Magnets! Magnets!!! What on earth is a gallon of magnets?

Maggots would make sense to an extent as Sheffield is a keen fishing area and a gallon of maggots may well ensure a good day by the water.

However this does seem slightly tenuous when the other option is a gallon of Magnet, which is a more than acceptable amount of ale and would definitely fill up my senses (or yours). I've had Magnet in Sheffield over the years not so much recently and never viewed it as a particularly Sheffield ale unless of course you know otherwise.
It's not particularly a Sheffield ale, just available in Sheffield. Woodbines and snuff aren't specifically related to Sheffield either as the moors aren't really good for growing tobacco.

Why would maggots fill up anyone's senses? Beer tobacco food Sheffield and the Blades. Maggots just doesn't make any sense.

For the record, I've been fishing many times and never found the need to buy more than a pint of maggots to last me a full day. Whoever bought a gallon?
Its magnet, always was and always will be.

When i used to go match fishing on the River Trent,it was the norm to buy a gallon of maggots and they would all be used in a 5/6 hour match.

Black Velvet who ever drunk a gallon of that ?

Not sure about Black Velvet but my sister could easily do a gallon of Guinness in her younger days. I couldn't.

Same here. A pint of maggots costs me about £2.70. If I needed to buy a gallon, I'd sell all my tackle on Fleabay.

When it first came out it was magnet.
John smiths brewed a beer called magnet.
It was a strong dark beer which was a popular beer doing the rounds in a lot of pubs & clubs in south Yorkshire.
I had my 1st pint some 40odd years since.
